Hi, thanks for helping me out.
No, the HDMI was not plugged in -- nor ever has been. I'm using a
laptop and the sound output should have been the built-in audio. After
I upgraded the system, it once (and only once) wanted to run all the
output through the HDMI, resulting in no audio at all.
