@Rey Leonard Amorato if you are using Virtual Box and if 3d acceleration
is enabled, try to turn off that feature and try to log in. This way

... and my issue is now resolved in Ubuntu 17.10, at least on a fresh
install. Not sure what changed, but no changes are necessary to
/etc/nsswitch.conf in order to make resolving DNS work with internal
domains while connect to openconnect VPN. Probably I should stick with
LTS :-)

I hadn't mention that I've been using lightdm. After switching to GDM
the issue was resolved.

When attempting a Wayland session, the relevant syslog section grew from
107 lines to 396 lines. 'gnome-shell' messages are gone, it looks like a
session gets actually started. And then there are now a lot of messages
like this one:

rather an upgrade from 17.04 (do-release-upgrade).

I'm seeing this issue as well. I can also confirm that copying doesn't
work when Terminal is opened by right-clicking the desktop and selecting
Open Terminal, but DOES work when I've opened it by other means.

Success! Applying the attached Diff keeps gnome-shell working for Xorg,
still makes these shader compilation errors going away. More of this
success see next comment here.
This Diff is not a solution, of course, but it should narrow down the
problematic area a lot.
