I get the same behaviour from gedit. It seems any application relying
on gnome-session running is going to hang. I would point at some Gnome
library as being the casue of this.

It seems the difference between my two test machines is that one one I
had logged in to Unity 7 previously, and that left gnome-session-binary
running. After a reboot to kill all systemd --user units, konsole now
hangs on both test machines.

This is simple to reproduce. The application has disappeared from the
screen but continues to run.
It looks like qtmir is closing the window (as requested) but no word

Upstart is not deprecated and is still in use as the session manager in
Ubuntu even with systemd in use as the init manager. Systemd does not

Wine tooltips don't disappear entirely from screen
Given that this problem seems to occur regardless of the presence of the
Unity desktop shell on a system or not, and that it seems to disappear
with a kernel update, I'm going to go out on a limb here and say it has
nothing to do with the Unity desktop shell.

Interesting, since the packaging has not changed for ages and we haven't
received any similar complaints from Intel-based users. The ARM
packages do not get regular upgrade testing, though, so it's possible
this bug has been present for years.
