By the way... After lightdm, gdm became the default and apt-get purge on
gdm caused exactly the same error, gdm processes hanged around and there
was no (easy/user-friendly) way of shutting down gdm. It appears that
the order of the things during uninstalling these is not correct
(shutdown, remove)
Encountered on a test env:
root@fubar:~# apt-get purge lightdm mysql-server
Reading package lists... Done

Reading state information... Done
Package mysql-server is not installed, so not removed

This problem still exists within Precise. I ran sudo apt-get purge lightdm and
got the following output in the Terminal:

in precise only.
For me it was more like an issue with stopping lightdm than un-installing it. I
triggered it first time as below.
