This issue seems to have improved, I presume with package updates since
it was first reported. Animations are generally no longer jerky. Soft
and hard reboot are generally no longer required. Keyboard Shortcuts
appear/disappear smoothly. Remaining problems:
* Opening the Dash almost never works.
I am now using 14.04 not 13.10 and no longer using a static background,
but am happy to adjust settings to test.

If I am not mistaken i was affected by the same bug (see attached stack trace).
Updating to the -proposed repository fixes the segmentation fault. Simple-scan
now runs normally with my HP scanjet G2410.

Huh, I'm not sure what on earth you are doing, but clearly the build
process doesn't always fail if compare-locales is not in the path before
building, otherwise we wouldn't be able to build it in the archive and
the various PPA's, every day. And it doesn't leave any files outside of
the build

I tested it out and still not working for me. Ubuntu 14.04LTS.
