I can confirm this bug -- Looks like we have the same laptop and have
the exact same symptoms, Plain vanilla does not indeed work: on boot,
screen changes mode 3 times before settling on 1920x1080 -- then gives

This issue is still present on trusty (14.04). I've built the patch from
post #8 (with some slight tweaking to the debian packaging info, to get

me in the 32-bit version (but not the 64-bit version) of Google Earth,
