Nautilus Memory Leak (14.04 Trusty Tahr)

Status in nautilus package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
Recently, I have discovered a memory leak with Nautilus. Lately,
whenever the process is running (even for desktop handling, not just
the file manager), it will slowly grow and become a memory-eatin-
machine. Today, I left my computer locked and on, and when I got home
it was taking 3.4GB!!! I have a feeling this has to do with the
desktop handler, since it happens without a nautilus window open. I do
use Variety, a memory-hungry wallpaper slide-show, but it only takes
  60-100MB.

Another fine icons size issue in Nautilus.

Status in nautilus package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  Hello,

I recently stumbled upon another fine icons size issue in Nautilus :

When it happen a program has a huge 'icon' (e.g. the OpenShot
  462px*462px /usr/share/pixmaps/openshot.svg for example), and a folder
contains a file of the corresponding (MIME or gvfs ?) type (even a
0-byte .osp file), then Nautilus displays this huge 'icon' as is, at
its nominal huge size in folder listing, when configured to show items
as icons not as a list, rendering the interface not unusable, but very
  awkward.

  Hope this helps.

  Regards,
  Valentin.

Bug description:
This is related with this report :
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/1574598

I post the syslog but I don't know if there is usable data in it.
It seems the Unity crash happened around line :
  "Apr 25 13:34:18 fractal org.gnome.Nautilus[1030]: Gtk-Message: GtkDialog
mapped without a transient parent. This is discouraged." This line is followed
by unknown symbols (GEdit displays an error message), then by a computer
restart and file system restore.

I did a cut/paste on one or two folders, containing around 1000 JPG
images, from and to the same disk. Unity froze almost instantly (can't
switch to TTY or do anything). After some time I turned off computer
with hardware button and restarted it. After logging in Unity I found
that the files had been correctly moved.

It seems the issue is triggered by Nautilus, cause yesterday Nautilus
was stuck while moving same kind of files, but Unity was still working
and I was able to kill Nautilus.

The issue is not exactly a thunderbird bug but probably still of
interest. I was notified that a forwarded message was received empty.
It turned out that the header of the original mail contains a wrong
character encoding (UTF-8 instead of ISO-8859-1). Since thunderbird
relies on the header info, the displayed message shows ill characters
represented by a question mark. When UTF-8 is being kept upon
forwarding it will be empty. Switching to the proper character set
before forwarding, however, allows a correct transmission.

There are two disks mounted in the system:
  1. / - root partition
  2. /mnt/storage - another partition

User has full privileges to root directory of disk#2 (storage).

  Let's create directory on disk#2:
  mkdir /mnt/storage/d

Let's create files in the directory:
  touch /mnt/storage/d/file1 /mnt/storage/d/file2

  1. Open Files application
  2. Go to /mnt/storage/d/
  3. Try delete file1
It works. The file lands in trash. /mnt/storage/.Trash-1000 directory is
created and the deleted file is there.

  Make following symbolic link:
  ln -s /mnt/storage/d /home/user/d

  4. Open Files application
  5. Go to ~/d
  6. Try to remove file2
It DOESN'T WORK. It says it cannot move to trash and user can only
permanently delete the file.

The application does not properly recognize that ~/d directory is in fact the
same as /mnt/storage/d.

The same configuration works perfectly in Linux Mint Cinnamon.

Normally, if a file exists it's selected and nautilus will scroll to

So if you want a file that does exist, but there's also a hidden file

you want exists in that folder.

As a practical example, gedit automatically saves the previous version

Flash drives refuse to open in Nautilus after a while

Status in nautilus package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
I'm on Ubuntu 16.04, stable install. I'm trying to open USB flash
drives and they are at first showing up as before on the Unitylauncher
and a Nautilus window open automatically with the drives content. If I
unmount the drive (eject it) and tries to mount another drive (or the
same) the flash drive for the most part starting with an open Nautilus
window again. If I unmount and tries to mount another drive again and
again then after a while it failes and no Nautilus window is showing.
It can work a few times but not for a particularly long time. The
drive is mounted though but Nautilus failes to open it. And Nautilus
on the launcher is not working either, if I click on 'Files', thus
Nautilus in Unitylauncher, it is of course also failing. Open a
terminal and running the command 'nautilus' gives this output:

  "(nautilus:9292): GLib-GIO-CRITICAL **:
  g_dbus_interface_skeleton_unexport: assertion
  'interface_->priv->connections != NULL' failed

  instance

  (nautilus:9292): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_signal_connect_object:
  assertion 'G_TYPE_CHECK_INSTANCE (instance)' failed"

NOTE: "Kunde inte registrera programmet: Tidsgränsen uppnåddes" above
means: "Could not register the application: Timeout was reached".

If I kill Nautilus, and relaunch it then Nautilus is appearing again
and it works for a while. It's thus for now difficult to work with
flashdrives, after some time I must kill Nautilus and that is
inconvenient. I can say that it can work for a longer time if I
unmount the drives from within Nautilus not from the device-icon in
the Unitylauncher, but through my testing I see that evidently it
failes even then after a while. So, if someone could help.

  Thanks in advance!

Title:
attempt to copy dot.mp3 to thumb drive (dot way takes precedence)

Status in nautilus package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
  Ubuntu 16.04 (fresh clean install -- format/wipe of 12.04)

  Nautilus

I tried this a couple times, at first thinking operator error, but I
then figured out how to work around the Nautilus bug.

I have two files in a directory -- one is a dot.wav music file and the
other is a dot.mp3 conversion of that music file, properly tagged
(using sound converter and easy tag).

  Here is the problem:

If you copy the dot.mp3 to a thumb drive (fresh, clean, formatted,
emptry), Nautilus does not copy the dot.mp3 to the thumb drive.

Instead, unbeknownst to the user, nautilus copies the dot.wav file to
  the thumb drive instead.

  ---

I made a few trips to the car before I realized the situation. Again,
I conservatively decided to make the presumption it was operator
error. Then, I decided to work around the bug, as follows:

I opened up a MATE terminal and worked through bash, created an empty
directory (i.e., mkdir) and copied JUST the dot.mp3 file to the empty
  directory (i.e., cp).

I probably should have just used bash to copy the dot.mp3 to the thumb
drive, but I used nautilus instead. This time it worked. I went out to
the car and plopped the thumb drive in and all was good.

  ---

I may have had the dot.wav already in the thumb drive at one point.
The second time, I know I emptied the thumb drive. By the third time,
I worked around the bug as above.

So, if I had to take a guess, I would say that nautilus is making the
dot.wav file take precedence over the dot.mp3 file. Yes, other than
the file extension, the base names (i.e., bash basename) are the same.

  Regards.

Status in nautilus package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
(As seen under yesterday's daily build of Ubuntu Budgie 18.04, 32bit,
  with all updates applied)

Under this build of Budgie, I opened "Disks", and formatted a 4GB USB
stick as FAT (quick format - not overwriting with zeroes). On the same
machine, the file manager complained about "unable to access drive -
read-only file system" (see attached screenshot), even though I
  routinely do the same operation.

I took that newly-formatted USB stick, placed it in a Linux Mint LTS
machine, which was able to mount and read the stick automatically and
with no problems, and I was able to copy a file onto the stick AOK.

So, it seems that the problem is not with the program "Disks" as such,
but rather with the Budgie / Gnome file manager.

  Thanks,
  Ken.

Title:
Nautilus crashes when dragging files into a subfolder

Status in nautilus package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
Nautilus is very unstable when moving files around.
It's quite easy to make it crash, or at least lose any coherent behaviour:

  1) create this file structure

  main_dir / dir1 / dir2
  main_dir / file1
  main_dir / file2

  2) select file1 and file2, and drag them onto dir1 (nautilus goes into
  dir1) then dir2.

  3) nautilus is lost : files are not copied. Placeholders don't
disappear. Eventually, nautilus will crash after playing with these
  files for a while.

Title:
Ubuntu 17.10 - Clicking on Favorite in Nautilus results in Favorite
  being dragged

Status in nautilus package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
I'm running Ubuntu 17.10 on X.Org (I will confirm later if this bug
occurs in Wayland). I have a Lenovo X1 Carbon with a touchpad,
  trackpoint and touch screen.

I have this on and off bug in Nautilus that occurs at least once a day
(though sometimes it could be upwards of 50% of the time). Using the
touchpad, I click on one of my favorites in Nautilus and even though I
did a very light tap, the favorite goes into drag and drop mode. This
is not related to my touchpad settings or drivers. I've gone as far as
disabling my touchpad's drag and drop function and the bug still
occurs even though I can't drag and drop anything else in the OS. This
bug is not affected by the touchpad driver as it has materialized
under both libinput and synaptics. The bug occurs even when I boot out
  of an Ubuntu live usb.

Is there some kind of logs you would like me to put up on pastebin or
some kind of troubleshooting you can recommend?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1822441] [NEW] Blank screen after startup

2019-03-30 Thread Torsten Römer
Public bug reported:

Updated from kubuntu 18.10 to 19.04 beta without problems. After first
reboot, first the kubuntu logo, then just a blank screen, no login
screen. Switching to console and log in there possible. All seems fine,
including wlan etc.

systemd status sddm says sddm is running, any attempt to start KDE
(including startkde) however fails with "could not connect to any x
display".

This happens with Kernel 5.0.0. Starting with 4.18.0-16-generic, the
login screen comes up and all is fine.

Anything I can contribute?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1821849] Re: LibreOffice Impress 6.2.2.2 Embedded Video Problem

2019-03-30 Thread Sam Colegrove
Disco's release is the 18 April and the next version, 6.2.3, of
LibreOffice is 15-21 April.

Currently no one has been assigned to solve this problem and when this
happens, I hope that person can "Pull a Rabbit out of a Hat" and quickly
solve the problem.

In the meantime, I have LibreOffice 6.1.4.2 locked-in on this version of
Disco and working to my satisfaction.

Given the short time to Disco's release, please consider going back to
LibreOffice 6.1.4.2, so that no one has "egg on their face" on the
release date.

LibreOffice Impress 6.2.2.2 Embedded Video Problem

Status in libreoffice package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
The following bugs are for LibreOffice 6.2.2.2 Impress on Kubuntu
  19.04.

When I start a slide-show with Impress by using either F5 or Shift F5,
I get a white screen. When I click on it, the slide is displayed.
When I exit the presentation with say "Esc", soffice.bin is in the
taskbar with the odp file used for the presentation. If I click on
the odp file and exit, both tasks are removed.

Now when I advance to an embedded video I get the image shown with
this report. When the video is started, the previous slide is shown on
top of the video as it is being played. Not a good view This
happens when either starting from the first slide or the one preceding
  embedded video.

I have tried the gtk3 options in https://launchpad.net/bugs/1820062
and the changes make no difference to this problem. I have also
installed gstreamer1.0-plugins-* which solved previous problem with
  LibreOffice.

Note: bluetooth does work in the same session: cli commands and blueman-
applet allow using Bluetooth in the same session no problem.

2019-03-30 Thread Nic30
Same problem there, also Dell M4800, I am using latest ubuntu 18.10 and it was
working until I installed latest nvidia-driver-418. I do not why. There is
suspicious message in dmesg.
(If I uninstall the nvidia driver it is still not working and reinstalling of
alsa-driver also did not help.)

It seems to me that everything is working just some GPIO actually does
not enable the output. The system detects the headphones correctly.

  That's about it I guess.

In my browser, while I use my touchpad to scroll up and down a page,

Title:
after Firefox upgrade the "safe bookmarks" dialog doesn't open

Status in firefox package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
This one might be a duplicate of Bug #603594

After a firefox upgrade from the backports from lucid 10.4 the safe bookmarks
dialog doesn't open when using the CTRL+D shortcut or clicking on "Bookmark
this page" in the menu. Instead it saves the bookmarks directly in the
"Bookmarks Menu" directory.
And yepp, I tried it in safe-mode and also with a new firefox-profile.

first I had this problem on my PC (64bit architecture) as well as on my
laptop (i386 architecture).
But it vanished on my PC wondrously after clicking to times at the little
star icon. After doing that once the Bookmarks dialog pops up the way it's
supposed to do (even after relaunching firefox). However that didn't work on my
laptop.

2019-03-30 Thread Paul White
We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to review all
reported bugs in a timely manner. You reported this bug some time ago
and there have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time.

Ubuntu 12.04 (precise) reached end-of-life on April 28, 2017.

Do you still see a problem related to the one that you reported using
currently supported versions of Ubuntu and Firefox? Please let us know
if you do otherwise this report can be left to expire in approximately
60 days time.

Thank you for helping make Ubuntu better.

Time by time, mainly during scrolling whole system freezes. Restart
  necessary.

Status in firefox package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
This problem occures on all programs, which has a scroll button, such
as Firefox, Google Chrome, Terminal a.s.o. It appears time by time,
normally 5 minutes after starting the computer and mostly during using
the scroll button. The bottom half of the program window is getting
black and the system is freezing. Sometimes it occures also while
doing nothing. In that case the computer is only freezing without
black areas on the display. I use a Nvidia Geforce 8400 M.

Title:
Cursor location is goofy when changing tabs

Status in firefox package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: firefox

WISH LIST: When I drag a link to another tab I wish the cursor would
be in the page, not the address bar. Rarely the cursor will be in a
text box on the page. When I press Page Up or Page Down the results
are not what I expected. Very annoying.

  ProblemType: Bug
  Architecture: i386
  Date: Sat Dec 15 12:02:18 2007
  DistroRelease: Ubuntu 7.10
  Package: firefox 2.0.0.11+2nobinonly-0ubuntu0.7.10
  PackageArchitecture: i386
  SourcePackage: firefox
  Uname: Linux vern-desktop 2.6.22-14-generic #1 SMP Sun Oct 14 23:05:12 GMT
2007 i686 GNU/Linux

  Steps to reproduce:

Find a link on a webpage
Drag it to open a new tab

  Expected:

Firefox focuses the keyboard cursor, and therefore the Page Up/Down
keys on the webpage itself so the webpage scrolling can be controlled
  by keyboard

  Actual:

Firefox keeps the keyboard cursor in the address bar

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1822426] [NEW] 19.04 Built in Intel HDA sound is disabled upon resume

2019-03-30 Thread Darin Miller
Public bug reported:

With 19.04, Intel Corporation 8 Series/C220 Series Chipset High
Definition Audio Controller intermittently is not enabled when resuming
from sleep. The HDMI sound device is enabled but that is not hooked up
on my system. New with 19.04, when sound works after resume, an icon
labeled "Built in Audio Stereo" appears during the resume process.

Unsure if this is related, but sound seems to sleep when not in use.
Launching sound enabled apps produces a quiet "tick, thud" sound as
sound system turns on.

When sound is not working, killall pusleaudio "fixes" the issue.

Title:
Too much information in File Systems

Status in Gnome System Monitor:
  Unknown
Status in gnome-system-monitor package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
Previous versions of File Systems only showed my two harddrives, and
  was pretty useful.

In Ubuntu 18.04 gnome-system-monitor > File Systems now shows 35 lines
of uninteresting lines, like /var/lib/snapd ...

I tried switching from Snap- to classic apt-based version, with these
  commands:

  sudo snap remove gnome-system-monitor
  sudo apt-get install gnome-system-monitor

I got the good old System Files back, showing just the two hard drives
of interest to me, but "snap remove gnome-system-monitor" removed a
lot of extra packages, so my shortcuts stopped working, and possibly
other stuff as well. I had to revert to snap-based gnome-system-
monitor to get them working again.

How can I get the previous and useful File Systems back, only showing
  my two hard drives?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1821609] Re: lightdm login screen briefly appears and then blanks out on Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T5870

2019-03-30 Thread Derk Willem te Bokkel
oh one thing I noticed and did not mention .. the plymouth screen fails
to appear (just a redish flash at top of screen) when booting from a
non-native grub for the recent daily xubuntu iso's if the native grub
is used plymouth screen appears..

for sda1 boot from any grub a plymouth screen appears although non-
native boots show a progress bar instead of a swirling circle .. native
boot is black version .. non-native is bluish

also attached is xorg.0.log from beta showing xorg ..crash

** Attachment added: "xor.0.log --sda7-xubuntu-disco-beta crash info"

Title:
lightdm login screen briefly appears and then blanks out on Intel(R)
  Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T5870

Status in xorg package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
Okay the has happened recently at least since march 18, 2019 iso and
march 22, 2019 iso are both effected very similar to one of my
previously reported bugs .. which was related to xorg not being
  installed ..

back ground .. PC is lenovo sl 500 with evo860 SSD drive

3 partions contain installs of disco sda1 -- main working system -- I
usually install grub from here as master ..

sda6 and sda7 are test installs of disco daily iso's 03-18-2019,
  03-22-2019 repectively

on the test installs as long as the iso is using the grub boot loader
installed from that install the system will boot normally .. the display manger
tends to flicker on and off but does final start and login can proceed.

but if another install re-installs grub as master the display manager
fails to stay active or even come-up for sda6 or sda7 only if their
own grubs are reinstalled will they work normally

sda1 display manager/xorg login works always no matter which "grub-
  source" is in control.

if I use rescue boot from any grub as master I can get the displays to work
by running dpkg fix which does nothing .. and then resuming the boot .. then
things work normally..
if the "non-rescue" boots are used the screen/computer locks and only a power
down and reboot gives access. (sometime requiring radical depowering ..
unpluging and removing battery)

now the is a message that appears that RCs??? level is missing.

2019-03-30 Thread Josua Dietze
Syncing Ubuntu usb_modeswitch is hardly possible because it's a fork of
the original, using a C implementation of the wrapper script.

I'd just throw out anything that's related to module loading and driver
binding.

Bug description:
Although I have noticed this issue only with the System Monitor I do
not know if it is isolated to it, but for some reason sometimes (about
half the time) when viewing the System Monitor through the Activities
Overview I get this strange effect where the numbers are clearly
changing but the graphs are not:

  System_Monitor_Activities_Overview_Only_Numbers_Changing.mp4

And when I click on the application the graphs often then show
something very different and carry as they were, so I'm going to say
that I don't think that this is just an accurate display of the System
Monitor going wrong, but rather something meaning that it is not
  displayed properly.

I can also close and reopen the Activities Overview and the System
Monitor will only snap out of it when I actually go to it (though I
will have to test if it only corrects the problem when I go to it
through the Activities Overview, but I think that that is the case).

I am running Ubuntu GNOME 15.10 with GNOME 3.18, but I am sure that
this issue was also present under Ubuntu GNOME 15.04 with GNOME 3.16.
I only really do fresh installs so it's not going to just be faulty
installation thing as I do them a lot.

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: gnome-themes

This is a bug in Firefox and Thunderbird that is reproducible only
with two of the eight themes installed by default in Ubuntu 7.04. The
two themes are Human and Glossy.

To reproduce (v1): In a maximized Firefox window, right click near the
bottom right corner of the window. Instead of just bringing of up a
context menu, it triggers the bottom menu item. In this case, the
bottom item is 'Switch Page Direction' and the direction of the whole
  page switches. See bug #34582.

To reproduce (v2): If you have a Firefox extension installed that
creates on icon on the status bar (in the bottom right), right
clicking there will also trigger the bottom menu item. See bug #68230.

To reproduce (v3): In a maximized Thunderbird window, right clicking
near the bottom right will cause your email message to be deleted.
(The bottom menu item is 'Delete Message'). See bug #107819.

Once you can reproduce this using the Human or Glossy theme, try
switching to a different theme (such as Clearlooks) to see that the
  bug is gone.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1819362] Re: HUAWEI E3531 HSPA+ USB Stick "please report the device ID to the Linux USB developers"

2019-03-30 Thread Kai-Heng Feng
According to Bjorn Mork [1], this modem should work out of the box
without usb-modeswtich.

So what do we need to do to make it work under Ubuntu? Sync usb-

Title:
Cannot boot or install - have to use nomodeset

Status in xserver-xorg-video-intel package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
On this 19.04 beta I have to use nomodeset to boot & install Ubuntu
  Budgie.

This is different behaviour from 18.04 and 18.10 where it booted and
  installed just fine without nomodeset.

Without nomodeset, grub/efi disappears, and after a while a solid
rather than blinking cursor on a black screen is seen. It does not
boot into a live session, nor displays the ubiquity window

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1424201] Re: Web browsers lacking hardware-accelerated video decoding

2019-03-30 Thread Chris Cheney
As neither Chrome/Chromium or Firefox has any real interest in Linux
support can we get Ubuntu to apply the patch? The patch has existed for
5 years already.

Even a partial solution where its built in but you still have to enable
it in config would be fine. Having to hunt down a ppa to get working
video in 2019 on Linux is absurd.

Otherwise users would be much better off moving to another distro that
supports it such as Arch, Fedora, etc as noted above.

Bug description:
The chromium team has done a great job to totally disable hardware
  decoding on Linux.

Even ignoring the GPU blacklist does not enable GPU decoding.

How ever the patch is quite simple and it's already working using this
  PPA ( using libVA ) :

  https://launchpad.net/~saiarcot895/+archive/ubuntu/chromium-dev

the corresponding patch is here :

  http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~saiarcot895/chromium-browser/chromium-
  browser.trusty.beta/view/head:/debian/patches/enable_vaapi_on_linux.diff

that would be great if we could have this patch indefault Ubuntu
chromium build, this situation is really sad right now, google use
linux to make chromeOS so chromebook are really good at playing videos
but GNU/Linux chromium is slow at doing it.
