Hi Chris! I'm on 12.04 right now, using Unity 3D/Compiz.
This bug happened in Gnome 2.x, but now in Gnome 3.x I think it's not an
issue anymore. Now Gnome 3.x uses a different shell (either Gnome Shell
or Unity as far as I know) with different ways of selecting workspaces.
For example, in Unity 3
What if NM always dropped whatever configuration file it needs in
/etc/dnsmasq.d/nm.conf,
and when NM was started, it would check if /etc/init.d/dnsmasq exists,
* if yes, dnsmasq is installed, so it read the configuration file and there's
no need to do anything,
* if not, dnsmasq-base is instal
** Description changed:
- Impact: it's not possible to same changes on some images
+ Impact: it's not possible to save changes on some images

do that or started after a change or upgrade? Could you try to log in,
when it fails do ctrl-alt-f1, log in there, copy .xsession-errors
