[Desktop-packages] [Bug 877012] Re: [panel] on a multi monitor setup the panel length appears to be calculated with the screen in focus at the time of execution

2012-07-29 Thread John Bender
All,

Sorry to reopen this bug but it still exists in precise. I've attached a
simplified patch that has sorted out the issue for me. It's not for
inclusion but it's probably good for a quick lead on what a good
solution would be. Also this handles both the initial geometry
calculation when the panel is instantiated and also the situation when
either screen sees a resolution change. I had not mentioned the second
part of the problem before.

** Patch added: add slot resize to update the geometry

[panel] on a multi monitor setup the panel length appears to be
calculated with the screen in focus at the time of execution

Status in “unity-2d” package in Ubuntu:

  Release:11.10

  Package:
  unity-2d-panel:
Installed: 4.12.0-0ubuntu1
Candidate: 4.12.0-0ubuntu1
Version table:

  Expected behavior:
The panel calculates it's width for each monitor on which it is displayed
covering the span from left edge to right.

  Actual Behavior:
When I log in with an external monitor connected the panel at the top might
be in one of two possible configurations. Either the larger screen will have a
shortened panel (http://i.imgur.com/vEC8K.png) or the smaller screen will have
one that extends past it's viewport (http://i.imgur.com/vWBM1.png). Both are
highlighted red in the images.

More importantly when I kill and restart the panel it will size itself
to whichever screen has focus. That's how I was able to take screens
  of both.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 410072] [NEW] A middle mouse button paste in gedit does not move cursor to insertion point

2012-07-29 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: gedit

Use the middle mouse button to paste highlight-selected text does not
move the cursor (and the viewed text) to the chosen insertion point.
This is dangerous when the selected text and the insertion point are far
apart because the user is left unsure if the paste succeeded until
scrolling to the insertion point (which can be difficult to refind in a
long document or in source code).

I am using the gedit in Ubuntu 9.04. I believe this to be a fairly
recent regression as I seem to recall it working just a few months ago
as I expect. I have tried deleting the gedit config directory and the
behavior persists. I turn on most of the plugins available by default
but that doesn't seem to be the cause.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 503632] [NEW] Multiple cursors always have the same cursor for one window, has to do with the last cursor that moved

2012-07-29 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I'm reporting this as a gtk problem because this bug does not occur in KDE 3 or
KDE 4 applications, only in gnome ones.
The problem is that when Multiple MPX cursors are on the same gtk window, they
are both the same, even if one was over text and another is over a button. Both
cursors are set to the type that the last cursor that moved should be.

To reproduce the bug:

0. Get MPX working. (You'll need Lucid, and extra mouse and keyboard, and this
tutorial-https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/MPX. )
1. Open a gtk application. Gedit for example.
2. Type some text.
3. Put cursor A over the text.
4. Put cursor B over a toolbar button (Without moving cursor A).
5. Notice that both cursors are a pointer.
6. Move cursor A the slightest bit.
7. Notice that both cursors are are the text, capital i-shaped style.

What I expected instead:That each cursor would be the style associated with
whatever it was over, independently of the other cursor.

Multiple cursors always have the same cursor for one window, has to do
with the last cursor that moved

Status in GTK+ GUI Toolkit:
  Fix Released
Status in “gtk+3.0” package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
I'm reporting this as a gtk problem because this bug does not occur in KDE 3
or KDE 4 applications, only in gnome ones.
The problem is that when Multiple MPX cursors are on the same gtk window,
they are both the same, even if one was over text and another is over a button.
Both cursors are set to the type that the last cursor that moved should be.

  To reproduce the bug:

  0. Get MPX working. (You'll need Lucid, and extra mouse and keyboard, and
this tutorial-https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/MPX. )

Bug description:

Use the middle mouse button to paste highlight-selected text does not
move the cursor (and the viewed text) to the chosen insertion point.
This is dangerous when the selected text and the insertion point are
far apart because the user is left unsure if the paste succeeded until
scrolling to the insertion point (which can be difficult to refind in
a long document or in source code).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 930563] Re: NM Applet menu entries not responding

2012-07-29 Thread Thomas
On my laptop, this appears to be a consequence of suspend/resume process.
No action is possible from within the applet after a resume (I've not noticed
if it's since the first one, I'll check that point)
Result is :
- selection of an item is just not taken in account
- submenus are empty (WiFi networks, VPN connections for me)

But networking is OK (thanks to network-manager) and the applet icon is
OK (i.e. the icon change from connecting to connected in notification
area).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 583728] Re: NetworkManager ignores the rfcomm port when it gets registered in blueman

2012-07-29 Thread Flittermice
Thanks for confirming this bug!

This doesn't need to have anything to do with blueman I think.
The port gets ignored as well when I add /dev/rfcomm0 by rfcomm bind ... or
/etc/bluetooth/rfcomm.conf.

Mabey I am hard, but I am using irfanview on my Ubuntu machine with
wine and the software is blazing fast compare to eog.

For a small test, I loaded the first picture of 133 and started to look at
the pictures as fast has I can for 15 seconds.
With Irfanview, I go from 1 to 70 in 15 seconds.
With eog, I go from 1 to 13 in 15 seconds.

  More notes

-eog used my CPU even after stopping the test.
-After loading the first image, Irfanview use 21MB, eog use 26,2MB
-After looking at 100 pictures, irfanview use 23,1MB, eog use 30,6MB
-eog use way more CPU power to do anything.

Been really slow is a bug. Not a critical one, but still one.

Bug description:
EOG crashes on SVG images created with OpenOffice.org Draw. As I
understand, the problem is that OpenOffice.org SVG export plugin uses
plain huge integer dimensions, not centimeters, inches or something
relavant. EOG just fails to allocate memory for an über-sized image
  then.

I guess that from the following output:
  GLib-ERROR **: gmem.c:154: failed to allocate 2412898400 bytes
  aborting...

  Program received signal SIGABRT, Aborted.

Personally Im not sure which side requires fixing, maybe both. OpeOffice
should export in sane dimensions, and EOG should automatically reduce images or
do something but not crash.

Both Firefox and Inkscape load the image correctly.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1030504] [NEW] Please ship pkg-config file lixbul.pc in firefox-dev

2012-07-29 Thread Alexander Korsunsky
Public bug reported:

In the firefox-dev package for Ubuntu Oneiric there used to be a pkg-
config file for XULRunner, namely /usr/lib/pkgconfig/libxul.pc.

This allowed binary extensions to be configured and built in a sane way.

In the Precise version of firefox-dev, this file has been removed due to
the Removing XULRunner from oneiric effort [1].

Unfortunately, this effectively breaks proper build configuration for
third-party binary extensions, such as mozilla-gnome-keyring [2] and
forces the Ubuntu package [3] to use hardcoded paths.

I don't see any point in hiding the XULRunner interface in Ubuntu, since this
is what locks Ubuntu out for interesting binary firefox extensions.
Other distributions such as Fedora and Debian still ship the libxul.pc file.

Please include the libxul.pc file in the firefox-dev package.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 803631] Re: gnome-control-center crashed with SIGSEGV

2012-07-29 Thread Andrei
I think I've got the same bug. A couple of weeks before I've hit this
with Linux Mint also. I investigated then and the problem was that the
network applet registered callbacks for events (network disconnection
etc.) but failed to unregister them when the applet was unloaded.
Because of this, the callbacks would be called again with freed memory
addresses as parameters.

Steps to reproduce: Open gnome-control-center, and after that the
network panel. Toggle the wired connection ON-OFF (I have a wired one),
then OFF-ON. Exit network panel to gnome-control-center and then
reenter network panel. Crash. From what I remember using Valgrind took a
couple (4, 5 at max) of entering, exiting the network applet before a
crash would occur. Using the Ubuntu compiled version would get me a
crash directly.

I'm using Ubuntu quantal (development branch) AMD64, gnome-control-
center 3.4.2.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 883574] Re: Install button misbehaves in ubuntu software center

2012-07-29 Thread mlg7
1. The bug is opened against 11.10; Precise is 12.04.
2. Do you use Gnome Classic?
3. In Precise, I have just seen the same misfeature with the reinstall button:

you click reinstall, THEN enter password (the button gets ungrayed),
THEN it is remains ungrayed for some time, then it turns into a progress
bar, then in becomes ungrayed reinstall again.

Title:
Install button misbehaves in ubuntu software center

Status in “software-center” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  1. Go to opera.com, download the .deb
  2. click on the downloaded file, ubuntu software center pops up
  3. wait while it pops up, it's very slow and boring
  4. click the install button
  5. the installation process begins, it's boring, switch to some other window
or have a cup of tea.
  6. return to the ubuntu software center window; try to remember if you
really did press the install button

  What I expected to happen:
A clear indication that the package has been installed, e.g. the install
button is grayed or install is changed to uninstall

  What happens instead:
I see the original install button. NOT grayed.

BUT when I click that button the 2nd time, it becomes grayed.
Unfortunately, it does not look like the software is already
installed, it looks like the button did not work. (I had to check the
applications menu to see it's really installed.)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1030310] Re: evince print function is corrupted

Title:
  evince print function is corrupted

Status in Evince document viewer:
  New
Status in “evince” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I have used evince for printing a pdf file.

Printing is working, but unfortunally only corrupted, missordered
  output comes to the paper.

To check that it is not cups by itself I have used the print preview
  function of evince.

What evince print preview shows is the same corrupted output that I
have also after printing on paper.

So, it is a problem with evince by itself.

  Addtional:

I attach a screenshot of the print preview of evince, whith the opended
document in evince in background.
I also attach the document which is affected by or causes the error.

  Steps to reproduce:

1.Open the attached document with evince
2.Use File - print - print preview and see the error rendered document in
print preview view.
  3.Close print preview.
4.Use the print button in the still open print dialog.
5.See that the paper print result is the same as in print preview.

The reproduction procedure hits the error to 100%.

The pdf rendering on the computer screen by evince is working proper
with this document and shows by itself no corruption.

It is only the printing rendering.

Title:
Graphical errors on charts in resources tab (faded bands)

Status in “gnome-system-monitor” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
On my system, the charts on the system monitor resources tab are
  displayed with some graphical errors.

The most obvious manifestation seems to be faded bands along the
charted lines, though there is also extra white around the chart area
(rather than the grey of the window background). The chart labels also
end up quite blurry and hard to read. Sometimes the pink line for
memory usage seems to hover horizontally right in one of the faded
  areas, and becomes nearly invisible.

Bizarrely, the problem is sometimes only present on one of my
monitors. The screenshot I have attached was taken straddling the two
monitors; the zone on the left appears normal, while the zone on the
right is noticeably affected. Dragging the system monitor between the
two monitors causes the issue to appear and disappear. However, other
times there is no difference and the system monitor is affected
equally no matter which monitor it is on.

  Ubuntu release: Oneiric 11.10, x86_64
  gnome-system-monitor: 3.2.0-0ubuntu1

What's make you believe that http is used ?
Is that a Mozilla.org build or do you got the binary build from somewhere else ?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1030575] [NEW] Advise user to install poppler-data if applicable

2012-07-29 Thread dg1727
Public bug reported:

In order to display CJK fonts, Evince needs the package poppler-data
to be installed. If poppler-data isn't installed, any CJK text in a
document is invisible, and Evince doesn't indicate to the user why the
text is invisible.

Suggested enhancement to Evince:
(modified from
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/poppler/+bug/197537/comments/26 )
'What needs to be done is for Evince to display a warning like CJK font
support is included in the package poppler-data, which is currently not
installed on your system in these cases.'

An intended solution has been made (documented in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/language-selector/+bug/893920 )
by modifying language-selector, starting with Ubuntu 12.04, to install
poppler-data unconditionally.

Even so, there are still some reasons for the suggested enhancement to Evince:
 * Someone may un-install poppler-data, either accidentally or on purpose, (if
Evince was un-installed as part of this, then Evince may then be re-installed
without poppler-data,) then try to view a file in Evince that contains CJK
fonts.
 * I don't know much about language-selector, so I suppose there may be cases
when language-selector doesn't run, either on upgrade from a version of Ubuntu
prior to 12.04, or on a new install of 12.04 or higher.
 * If the issue is addressed upstream (that is, in Evince), then users of other
Linux distros would benefit. I am reporting this issue against Ubuntu instead
of upstream because of the relevancy of language-selector, which is specific to
Ubuntu.

The issue of invisible CJK fonts can affect PDF documents that contain
only Latin-alphabet characters but were produced by software that is set
up for CJK speakers. So the issue can affect non-CJK-speaking Evince
users.

My Evince package version is 2.32.0-0ubuntu12.4 on Ubuntu 11.04 (natty).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 987220] Re: System does not power off reliably when Shut Down chosen from GUI

2012-07-29 Thread louBurnard
I have this bug on a thinkpad x301 since upgrading it to Pangolin. It's
intermittent though -- occasionally choosing Shutdown from the system
menu (top right) has worked but usually it just hangs on the ubuntu
splash screen with the little row of white buttons flashing red. LEDs
show that wireless is off, but not power. And the laptop gets quite hot
unless I force it to shut down with the vulcan nerve pinch.

No NVIDIA drivers here.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1030615] [NEW] Braser hangs at end of burn

2012-07-29 Thread Simon Rodan
Public bug reported:

After burning the disk (CD or DVD), Brasero tried to eject the disk -
and fails with this message:

Please eject the disc from HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GH22LP21 manually.
The disc could not be ejected though it needs to be removed for the current
operation to continue.

Ejecting the disk does not cancel the message.

After ejecting the disk and clicking cancel this message appears:

Image successfully burned to DVD (or CD)
(progress bar)
Success

Clicking close appears to close the application. However it still
appears as a running process, which prevents it being launched again
(either with right click against a file or from Main menu - Sound and
Video - Brasero Disk Burner until the running instance has been ended or
killed.

Bug description:
By default, when new emails arrive in Thunderbird, they *sometimes* highlight
the messaging menu. As described by Chris Coulson, a message highlights the
menu if:
  - The message is sent with high-priority OR
  - The message is flagged (by a filter) OR
  - The message is addressed directly to the recipient (eg, not CC) AND the
message is not low prioirty AND the message wasn't automated AND the message is
not from a mailing list.

This is good behavior for some people, but not for others, e.g. ViViD:
In my personal case, no message received through Thunderbird lacks
importance. Since I hide the launcher by default, many mails go
unnoticed for a time and I find myself randomly mousing over the
  launcher to check mails.

To suit more people, Thunderbird should contain a setting for which
messages highlight the messaging menu. One option should be to
highlight messages if they are from one of your contacts.

This setting needs design, and then proposing (and maybe implementing)
  upstream.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1030630] [NEW] System freeze on logout and shutdown

2012-07-29 Thread Pablo Piaggio
Public bug reported:

3 out 5 times I logout or shutdown my laptop freezes. I don't know how
to troubleshoot this problem myself, so I would gladly provide more
information if needed.

This problem has presented since the installation of 12.04 (clean
install), and has not been fixed by any update.

I think this may be a regression since 11.10 did not have this problem.

From the symptoms, I would say it is similar to this bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/767927 (purple bar
on top some of the times).

When I am successfully able to logout. I've tested going into console
and try 'sudo service lightdm stop ', and again 3 out 5 my system
freezes.

More info:

how to troubleshoot this problem myself, so I would gladly provide
  more information if needed.

This problem has presented since the installation of 12.04 (clean
install), and has not been fixed by any update.

I think this may be a regression since 11.10 did not have this
  problem.

From the symptoms, I would say it is similar to this bug:
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/767927 (purple
bar on top some of the times).

When I am successfully able to logout. I've tested going into console
and try 'sudo service lightdm stop ', and again 3 out 5 my system
  freezes.

  More info:
  up-to-date Ubuntu 12.04
  Toshiba Satellite A665 laptop.
  Nvidia 310m (proprietary drivers)

Thanks in advance for all your help.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1030357] Re: crash with SIGSEGV in cairo, when evince tries to print this PDF file

2012-07-29 Thread Edward Donovan
Ok -- I guess I don't have a gnome bugzilla account, yet, but I'll try
to file it there, too.

I would think that the reversed operator is a valid fix, on its own,
anyway. Would you agree?

Thanks.

Bug description:
While I was testing for a different bug, I found a PDF that evince
consistently crashes on, when asked to print. The crash turns out to
  be in the cairo library.

  To reproduce:

  1) Open Prepaid-eng.pdf with evince.
  2) Select Print from the File menu.
  3) Hit Print or Print Preview.

Evince will put up a progress bar, getting up to 'printing page14 of

Status in GNOME Desktop Common Files:
  Fix Released
Status in “gnome-desktop3” package in Ubuntu:

Status in “gnome-desktop3” source package in Precise:

Bug description:
  Impact:
  - screen connected to cards using the fglrx driver might get labelled as
Laptop when they are external screens

  Test Case:
  - run the system settings display panel on a machine using the fglrx driver,
where the output listed in Xorg.0.log is classified as a DFP one, with an
external screen

With the precise version the display is labelled Laptop incorrectly,
  the update should fix that

  Regression potential:
  - fglrx users should check that suspend on lid close still behave the same
way, the display type can have an impact on the suspend behaviour (that patch
is not supposed to lead to any change there but that's something to double
check)

  ---

Today after installing the fglrx drivers on my Radeon 6950 cayman
card, in the Displays options, in order to get dual monitors to work
I had to first go into amdcccle and enable it there, restart the
computer, and THEN enable it in the displays setting. Also, both
monitors are showing up as laptop. When using the radeon drivers
each monitor is picked up as Acer blah blah, but with the
propriatary drivers they both say laptop and there is no visual
color difference to indicate differences between the two.

It would be nice if we could Unify the displays menu to where it
will enable dual monitors in amdccle when that option is selected or
  visa versa.

It would also be nice to see the two monitors registering as their
  proper names and differentiation.

Displays is registering dual monitors as laptop when using fglrx

Status in GNOME Desktop Common Files:
  Fix Released
Status in “gnome-desktop3” package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in “gnome-desktop3” source package in Precise:
  Fix Released

Bug description:

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 411358] Re: Thunderbird2 gconf gmt problem 'Bad key or directory name' because of plus symbol (+)

2012-07-29 Thread Jonathan Heard
I'm yet to do a bit more research into this but I believe that
Thunderbird is basically correct in what it is doing (even though it
seems daft at face value)... I can also confirm that Thunderbird has
been doing this for a long time and what has changed is the presentation
of the gconf errors.

This issue is attributed to the Ubuntu Thunderbird package being
compiled with support for GIO. If you use the binary package from
mozilla then it does not should a pop up dialog.

Thunderbird chooses GIO in preference to GConf if it's available but
then GIO actually uses GConf itself to do the lookup. The error handling
is configured slightly differently and this results in the pop-ups.

I need to do some more tests when I have time and then I'll try to
propose a fix.

  From reading this extract (

Subject:Re: GConf/Thunderbird error on Solaris Nevada

Hi Mats,I believe you download the contribute builds of Thunderbird 2, and
run
  it on snv_70.

For some reason, the fix is upstreamed to Thunderbird 3 alpha, but not
  community version of Thunderbird 2.
Fixed in snv_68 means the fix was integrated to Thunderbird bundled
  with snv_68.

...it seems that the fix for this in thunderbird2 might require some manual
intervention as although the problem is well know, the fix was only
incorporated in the newer thunderbird3.

Have just checked the Karmic version at:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/karmic/thunderbird
which currently shows that version 2 of thunderbird is planned for Karmic
release.

As thunderbird3 is at Beta 3 right now I can perhaps see why debian and
ubuntu are sticking with Thunderbird2 just now.
http://www.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/about/press/archive/2009-07-21-01

However it does seem a shame to ship a new release with this known
  gconf issue unpatched.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1030504] Re: Please ship pkg-config file lixbul.pc in firefox-dev

2012-07-29 Thread Micah Gersten
Thank you for reporting this to Ubuntu. We can't properly support
binary extensions with rapid release, this is why the pkg-config file
was removed. Please try the mozilla-plugin.pc file as it should provide
the ability to build NPAPI plugins whose interface most likely won't be
changing over time.

** Changed in: firefox (Ubuntu)
   Status: New = Won't Fix

Title:
  Please ship pkg-config file lixbul.pc in firefox-dev

Status in “firefox” package in Ubuntu:
  Won't Fix

Bug description:
In the firefox-dev package for Ubuntu Oneiric there used to be a pkg-
config file for XULRunner, namely /usr/lib/pkgconfig/libxul.pc.

This allowed binary extensions to be configured and built in a sane
  way.

In the Precise version of firefox-dev, this file has been removed due
to the Removing XULRunner from oneiric effort [1].

Unfortunately, this effectively breaks proper build configuration for
third-party binary extensions, such as mozilla-gnome-keyring [2] and
forces the Ubuntu package [3] to use hardcoded paths.

I don't see any point in hiding the XULRunner interface in Ubuntu, since
this is what locks Ubuntu out for interesting binary firefox extensions.
Other distributions such as Fedora and Debian still ship the libxul.pc file.

Please include the libxul.pc file in the firefox-dev package.
