:-) even more since scanimage -L does not detect the scanner even as
root, although the scanner itself works running xsane from a root
terminal.

The reconnection issue is part of a wider problem we have that snapd
doesn't provide any notifications of changes and GNOME Software doesn't
consider network status to affect the app information. We probably need
to do some workarounds in GNOME Software for this and again snapd might
better handle
They're not listed because we fail to get icons for them (almost not
snaps provide a local icon and we get them from the store - not
available without network). GNOME Software doesn't allow apps without
icons (an upstream decision, and not ideal for our case).

If I add usr/bin/xdg-desktop-menu and usr/bin/xdg-icon-resource to the
snap, the errors go away, and indeed a desktop file is created in
$HOME/snap/chromium/current/.local/share/applications/.

does not seem to affect anything i do is it best to ignore it or how
can i re-install 16.04 if so how i'm a real amateur

This bug happens to me quite frequently (from once to three times per
day) and it's quite annoying.
It appears to be random even if sometimes it happens when I try to open
the notification window (in the topbar clicking on the date time)

further update - prior to 17.10, my logon routine was to boot up my
laptop with the screen open, then as soonn as my 2 monitors picked up
the screen image during the boot up process, I closed my laptop screen
fully shut, and completed the rest of the boot up process, including
entering my logon pas
