Title:
  Unable to authenticate to Google Gmail mail servers: Secure connection
  failed

Status in thunderbird package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  I get an error "Secure connection failed" whenever I attempt to
  authenticate to accounts that are hosted by Google. This affects
  gmail.com addresses and addresses in other domains that use Google
  Workspaces. I am able to connect to other mail servers (e.g. ones
  running dovecot).

  In order to make sure the problem wasn't caused by any plugin, etc.
  that I had installed, I reinstalled the packages and moved aside the
  ~/.thundirbird directory.

  The problem still occurs doing the account setup phase for the Google
  accounts. I enter the name, address, password in the main Thunderbird
  window, and then get a pop-up window that asks for account name and
  password again. After entering that, it proceeds to ask me if I want
  to allow Thunderbird permission to access mail, calendars, etc., and
  it then asks me to do the two-factor authentication. It's after I do
  the two-factor authentication and click the button to indicate that I
  have done so that I get the error.

  There should not be any outbound firewall rules blocking connections
  to Google servers. IPv6 does not work properly from this network, but
  I don't have any known problems with IPv4 connections to Google.

Title:
  NetworkManager does not complete DHCP negotiation

Status in network-manager package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
  I run into a problem today where NetworkManager suddenly stopped
  configuring network interfaces - it would ask DHCP server for an IP
  address, the say negotiation failed and then do this again in a loop.

  This happened on a built-in wired interface, and also on a USB
  ethernet dongle that I plugged in.

  Turns out the cause was that I run "dhclient -v" to try to force DHCP
  client to renew the lease. Apparently, dhclient creates directory
  "/run/network" and if this directory is present the NetworkManager
  refuses to accept DHCP server proposals.

  This happens even after server restart, and with no dhclient running -
  just the presence of /run/network is enough to cause the problem.

  Removing the directory "/run/network" fixes the issue.

  I imagine quite a few people run into this, because using dhclient to
  manually bring up an address is fairly common practice.

  I am using Ubuntu 22.04

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2039804] Re: SRU request: qpdf: data loss bug affecting versions 11.0.0 through 11.6.2

2023-10-23 Thread Jay Berkenbilt
The tests include binary files. Unless something has changed, I can't
create a quilt patch that modifies a binary file. The qpdf test suite is
full of PDF files, and PDF files are binary files, even when they are
hand-created, as many of mine are. This makes including tests in patches
challenging. There are a few unit tests that we could include, but they
will likely not backport cleanly, which adds additional risk, and I
don't think including them in the patch will add any value since the
tests are specifically crafted to prove that this bug is fixed, and we
have already done that through current releases and the manual tests.
The bug affects a very specific pattern in the data. This part of the
code that was affected is not actively modified, and the bug involved
changing an infrequently-traversed section of code. The tokenizer is
very low level and stable, and I did an audit of the code again after
this bug was found.

qpdf has been an open source project since 2008 and has been in debian
since the beginning. I am the author and debian maintainer. It is
excessively unlikely that there will a "next" SRU that will come from
other than the version control system, and unless I am hit by the
proverbial bus, I will probably be the originator of it. While qpdf has
a wide following, if I were not there to fix problems like this and push
them through, it is not likely that problems like this would even be
entered into an SRU process. It's been quite a long time since there's
been any divergence between the debian and Ubuntu versions of the
package.

While I agree that more testing is better, I wonder if the benefit we
will get is actually worth the effort. The new tests exercise specific
case related to this fix. If there is still a bug of this type, adding
the new tests will not help us find them. I don't think it would be
worth the hassle to tweak the test system or jump through some hoops to
allow the binary files involved in the tests to get into the patch --
that is more likely to cause a problem than to prevent one. The same is
true of trying to backport the unit tests. qpdf processes millions of
pages a day across a wide range of free and commercial systems. My
employer processes over a million pages a day all by itself.

In qpdf's 21 year history, 15 of which have been open source, this is
only the second data-loss bug, and it has the potential to cause silent
corruption of data in rare corner cases. I appreciate the diligence
here, but I really think the level of testing that has already gone into
this, the inclusion of new patches in the latest release, is adequate,
and now that the bug is known, our priority should be getting a well-
reviewed, well-tested patch in front of users to minimize the risk of
data loss.

Please let me know what else I need to do to get this through. I will
cooperate, of course. My intention here is not to argue, but rather to
try to assure you that the testing is already quite thorough, most
likely exceeding the standard that would be applied to most packages by
their authors. We are passing a point of diminishing return. Thanks for
considering my argument.

OK, but doesn't that just leave a problem behind for the next person who
tries to do an SRU to this package? Can't we just include the tests?

  case, this bug results in silent data loss. The fix is very small and
  locally contained. The upstream fix includes several new test cases,
  but the patch I will include to fix the issue only includes the
  relevant code change.

  I also reported this as a debian bug: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-
  bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=1054158

  It was approved as a stable update by debian:
  https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=1054119

  [ Impact ]

  The bug could result in silent corruption of binary strings in PDF
  metadata. It could also result in failure of qpdf to process a valid
  file. Data loss justifies a stable update.

  [ Test Plan ]

  The test file in https://github.com/qpdf/qpdf/issues/1050 can be used
  to prove that the bug exists in versions >= 11.0.0 and <= 11.6.2 and
  that the bug is fixed in 11.6.3.

  The upstream fix includes several additional automated test cases.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2039804] Re: SRU request: qpdf: data loss bug affecting versions 11.0.0 through 11.6.2

2023-10-23 Thread Till Kamppeter
Thanks Jay, for elaborating on the test procedures and also for
providing instructions for manual testing so that users can easily
verify the fix. I have copied your instructions to the "[ Test Plan ]"
section of the initial description of the bug so that they get easily
found.

** Description changed:

  Notes:

  * I am the upstream author and debian maintainer for qpdf.
  * This bug has been fixed in debian unstable and testing with version 11.6.3,
but because 24.04 is not yet open, it has not synced. This should not block
fixing 23.04 and 22.04. I have uploaded 11.6.3 to my ppa:
https://launchpad.net/~qpdf/+archive/ubuntu/qpdf
  * I am attaching debdiffs for lunar and mantic

  Upstream bug https://github.com/qpdf/qpdf/issues/1050 revealed a bug in
  qpdf's lexical layer that would cause qpdf to discard the character in a
  binary string following an octal quoted character with 1 or 2 digits.
  The PDF spec allows octal digits to be \d, \dd, or \ddd, and allows the
  first two forms if the next character is other than an octal digit. Most
  PDF writers never use the \d or \dd forms, but some do. With default
  options, qpdf does not parse or alter strings inside content streams, so
  this bug is not likely to affect page content. However, binary strings
  of this sort are common in the document /ID and may also appear in
  metadata for encrypted files. In some cases, such as the file in #1050,
  this bug can cause error, in this case, because the discarded character
  was the string end delimiter. In most case, this bug results in silent
  data loss. The fix is very small and locally contained. The upstream fix
  includes several new test cases, but the patch I will include to fix the
  issue only includes the relevant code change.

  I also reported this as a debian bug: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-
  bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=1054158

  It was approved as a stable update by debian:
  https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=1054119

  [ Impact ]

  The bug could result in silent corruption of binary strings in PDF
  metadata. It could also result in failure of qpdf to process a valid
  file. Data loss justifies a stable update.

  [ Test Plan ]

  The test file in https://github.com/qpdf/qpdf/issues/1050 can be used to
  prove that the bug exists in versions >= 11.0.0 and <= 11.6.2 and that
  the bug is fixed in 11.6.3.

  The upstream fix includes several additional automated test cases. These
  are not included in the patch, but they are included in the upstream
  commit that fixes the bug:
  https://github.com/qpdf/qpdf/commit/1ecc6bb29e24a4f89470ff91b2682b46e0576ad4

  qpdf has a rigorous test suite and an extremely good quality record. It

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2034619] Re: [amdgpu] gnome-shell gets SIGKILL'd when lock screen or under heavy load in Wayland

2023-10-23 Thread Mario Limonciello
The fixes are identified, I don't think this should wait until GNOME 45.1
release.
This issue is totally breaking suspend on several of my test systems.

I've backported the fixes from the GNOME 45 branch onto this PPA build:
https://launchpad.net/~superm1/+archive/ubuntu/lp2034619/+packages

I've also uploaded the mutter package into the proposed queue for SRU
team to look at.

Bug description:
  [ Impact ]

  gnome-shell gets unceremoniously SIGKILLed on some Ryzen systems,
  sometimes when the screen locks, sometimes when launching particular
  apps.

  [ Workaround ]

  Add this to /etc/environment:

    MUTTER_DEBUG_KMS_THREAD_TYPE=user

  and then reboot.

  [ Test Plan ]

  Not all Ryzen systems (including one I just purchased) are able to
  reproduce the bug. We have no choice but to leave final verification
  to the community. Anyone affected should try locking their screen and
  verify they are not instantly returned to the login screen.

  [ Where problems could occur ]

  Anywhere in frame scheduling and particularly for mouse cursor
  movement since that's what the real-time thread exists to optimize.

  [ Original Description ]

  I have this issue on Ubuntu 23.10. Lock screen works only with an external
monitor connected. Otherwise the session is ended and the user is logged out
and brought to the gdm screen.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2037179] Re: transmission-daemon memory leak

2023-10-23 Thread Marius Gedminas
I'm also seeing memory leaks in transmission-gtk after upgrading to
22.04 LTS. In 48 hours it eats up all the RAM and Swap and gets killed
by systemd-oomd.

Title:
  transmission-daemon memory leak

Status in transmission package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Since deploying transmission-daemon on Ubuntu 22.04 I've noticed a

  # lsb_release -rd
  Description:  Ubuntu 22.04.3 LTS
  Release:  22.04

  2)
  # apt-cache policy transmission-daemon

  Application behavior is normal, and working as expected, with the exception
of the memory leak. I've been using scheduled restarts to get around it. See
pmap output below, it shows the process currently using nearly 2GB of memory
while running no torrents & being alive for 1 days, 16 hours.

Bug description:
  When a connection is deleted using any NM facility, libnetplan is
  failing to delete the YAML file. Because of that, the connection will
  be recreated when "netplan generate" runs again.

  This is probably being caused by a combination of two things. First,
  the NM's systemd unit has this setting "ProtectSystem=true", which
  will mount /usr as read-only for NM. Second, we migrated the default
  "00-network-manager-all.yaml" file to, /usr/lib/netplan recently [1].
  When libnetplan tries to open this file for writing, the open system
  fails with EROFS:

  ---
  22517 openat(AT_FDCWD, "/lib/netplan/00-network-manager-all.yaml",
O_WRONLY|O_CREAT|O_TRUNC, 0600) = -1 EROFS (Read-only file system)
  22517 write(2, "netplan_delete_connection: Canno"..., 76) = 76

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2039804] Re: SRU request: qpdf: data loss bug affecting versions 11.0.0 through 11.6.2

2023-10-23 Thread Jay Berkenbilt
> This is great, but is this test suite run as part of the package build
and publication process in Ubuntu? If not, how could we arrange to run
the test suite against the Ubuntu build of the package that includes
this patch to ensure that we aren't regressing unaffected users in
providing this update?

The test suite is run as part of the Ubuntu build. The patch doesn't
include the new test cases, but it does include all the old ones, which
should demonstrate that there is no regression. When 24.04 opens for
business and the packages sync, the new tests will run as they are in
11.6.3. You can also see it in my PPA:
https://launchpad.net/~qpdf/+archive/ubuntu/qpdf. In any case, I believe
the fact that test suite is run during the existing builds should be
sufficient to ensure that there is no regression. qpdf also has
meaningful autopkgtests. You can also check the debian build output.
Debian stable proposed updates has 11.3.0 with the same patch.

For manual testing:

Running `qpdf --check 018.pdf` where `018.pdf` is the file attached to
the upstream bug will reproduce the issue. With the current version in
22.04 and 23.04, you will see something like this:

```
WARNING: /tmp/z/018.pdf (xref stream: object 17 1, offset 110340): EOF while
reading token
WARNING: /tmp/z/018.pdf (xref stream: object 17 1, offset 110830): unexpected
EOF
WARNING: /tmp/z/018.pdf (xref stream: object 17 1, offset 110830): parse error
while reading object
WARNING: /tmp/z/018.pdf (xref stream: object 17 1, offset 110830): expected
endobj
WARNING: /tmp/z/018.pdf: file is damaged
WARNING: /tmp/z/018.pdf (offset 110267): xref not found
WARNING: /tmp/z/018.pdf: Attempting to reconstruct cross-reference table
qpdf: /tmp/z/018.pdf: unable to find trailer dictionary while recovering
damaged file
```

After the fix, you will see
```
checking /home/ejb/Downloads/018.pdf
PDF Version: 1.7
File is not encrypted
File is not linearized
No syntax or stream encoding errors found; the file may still contain
errors that qpdf cannot detect
```
(obviously with the full paths based on whatever you call the file).

  SRU request: qpdf: data loss bug affecting versions 11.0.0 through

Status in Qpdf:
  Fix Released
Status in qpdf package in Ubuntu:

Status in qpdf source package in Lunar:

Bug description:

  Upstream bug https://github.com/qpdf/qpdf/issues/1050 revealed a bug
  in qpdf's lexical layer that would cause qpdf to discard the character
  in a binary string following an octal quoted character with 1 or 2
  digits. The PDF spec allows octal digits to be \d, \dd, or \ddd, and
  allows the first two forms if the next character is other than an
  octal digit. Most PDF writers never use the \d or \dd forms, but some
  do. With default options, qpdf does not parse or alter strings inside
  content streams, so this bug is not likely to affect page content.
  However, binary strings of this sort are common in the document /ID
  and may also appear in metadata for encrypted files. In some cases,
  such as the file in #1050, this bug can cause error, in this case,
  because the discarded character was the string end delimiter. In most
  case, this bug results in silent data loss.

  These are not included in the patch, but they are included in the
  upstream commit that fixes the bug:
  https://github.com/qpdf/qpdf/commit/1ecc6bb29e24a4f89470ff91b2682b46e0576ad4

  [ Where problems could occur ]

  This fix has a very low risk of causing a regression. The fix is very
  localized to qpdf's

Title:
  [upstream] Missing Data when Copying from Clipboard to Writer

Status in LibreOffice:
  Confirmed
Status in libreoffice package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  I have copied and pasted the webpage
'https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/msttcorefonts/+bug/1607535' into
LibreOffice, so as to be able to print and read it. The resulting page is
incomplete. Thus, for example, at [Workaround 1], where the the following
command line is specified:
    $ wget http://downloads.sourceforge.net/corefonts/
    {andale32.exe,arial32.exe,arialb32.exe,comic32.exe,courie32.exe,
    georgi32.exe,impact32.exe,times32.exe,trebuc32.exe,verdan32.exe,
    webdin32.exe}
  only the following text appears:
    $ wget http://
    {
    georgi32.
    webdin32.exe}
  The HTML code for that text is:
$ wget http://downloads.sourceforge.net/corefonts/;>http://downloads.sourceforge.net/corefonts/
{andale32.exe,arial32.exe,arialb32.exe,comic32.exe,courie32.exe,
georgi32.exe,impact32.exe,times32.exe,trebuc32.exe,verdan32.exe,
webdin32.exe}
  The problem is triggered by the tag. Where one of these occurs in the
HTML, all subsequent text is omitted until either a or a tag is
reached (and of course there may be others).
  As there are 956 tags in this document, much of the text is missing
after pasting. If the all the tags are removed from the page, copying
and pasting works fine.
  I shall be grateful for help with the problem, as it means that that with
LibreOffice copying and pasting is unreliable.

  Ubuntu Mate 16.04.3
  lsb-release: 9.20160110ubuntu0.2
  LibreOffice Writer: libreoffice-writer 1:5.1.6-rc20ubuntu1-xenial2

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2039804] Re: SRU request: qpdf: data loss bug affecting versions 11.0.0 through 11.6.2

2023-10-23 Thread Robie Basak
Thank you for contributing this fix!

Could you please expand on the Test Plan?

For manual testing, what are the exact steps that a user would perform,
what results would indicate that the bug is present, and what results
would indicate that the bug is fixed? For example, I don't see a command
to run in https://github.com/qpdf/qpdf/issues/1050, or the expected
results if the bug is fixed.

For automated testing, you said the tests aren't included in the patch.
Why not? Could we include them instead, and therefore increase
confidence in the correctness of the fix?

> qpdf has a rigorous test suite

This is great, but is this test suite run as part of the package build
and publication process in Ubuntu? If not, how could we arrange to run
the test suite against the Ubuntu build of the package that includes
this patch to ensure that we aren't regressing unaffected users in
providing this update?

  SRU request: qpdf: data loss bug affecting versions 11.0.0 through

Status in Qpdf:
  Fix Released
Status in qpdf package in Ubuntu:
  New
Status in qpdf source package in Lunar:
  New
Status in qpdf source package in Mantic:
  New

Bug description:

  These are not included in the patch, but they are included in the
  upstream commit that fixes the bug:
  https://github.com/qpdf/qpdf/commit/1ecc6bb29e24a4f89470ff91b2682b46e0576ad4

  [ Where problems could occur ]

  This fix has a very low risk of causing a regression. The fix is very
  localized to qpdf's lexical layer and is in a code path that only
  occurs when a 1-digit or 2-digit octal quoted character is terminated
  by other than an octal digit. This is the first bug in qpdf's lexical
  layer in many years. It was introduced by a pull request from a
  reliable and consistent contributor who has made may improvements to
  qpdf's performance. The fix follows the established pattern of how to
  handle instances in which a character triggers a state change and has
  to be reprocessed in the new state.

  qpdf has a rigorous test suite and an extremely good quality record.
  It processes millions of documents daily by many commercial entities.
  My current employer runs millions of pages a day through qpdf.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2019045] Re: [snap] New Ubuntu font with normal weight displayed as bold in Google Docs in Chromium after upgrading to Lunar

<---

I don't quite understand the process there, an uneducated guess: It is
trying to fetch a font and then storing it using the filesystem API —
which would save it in snap/chromium/common/chromium/Default/File\
Systems but that directory doesn't even exist. Maybe Firefox's
implementation differs from Chromium's critically enough to hit this
bug. Disabling that with --disable-file-system has no effect.

* Docs uses a remote font instead of a system font because --disable-
remote-fonts prevents the Ubuntu font from loading despite it still
being listed (the 't' character is a giveaway). This is in line with the
error message.

* Since we don't get the problem in Firefox, I tried switching the user
agent to Firefox just to see if behavior changed; it didn't.

  [snap] New Ubuntu font with normal weight displayed as bold in Google
  Docs in Chromium after upgrading to Lunar

Status in chromium-browser package in Ubuntu:

Status in fonts-ubuntu package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  I am experiencing a rendering regression after upgrading from Kinetic to
Lunar.
  Google Docs using the Ubuntu font family are displayed incorrectly in
Chromium: the normal weight font is rendered identically to the bold weight
one, instead of being thicker than light and thinner than medium.

  Printing is also affected, unless I use Google Docs' download to PDF
  function, although that probably triggers a server-side rendering.

  This issue does not occur in Firefox or Google Chrome.

  One thing that may be relevant: if I force-refresh my test Google Doc
  I see all four Ubuntu font lines initially being rendered as bold. The
  light and medium lines are then re-rendered with the correct weight.
  It's as if bold was the default weight and the normal variant
  disappeared.

  As far as I can tell I was already running Chromium 112.0.5615.49 in
  Kinetic, and with Chromium being a snap I don't quite understand why
  the Ubuntu series would matter.

  I have also tried version 114.0.5735.16 (in latest/beta at the
  moment); the symptoms are identical.

  The attachments show the rendering error.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2019045] Re: [snap] New Ubuntu font with normal weight displayed as bold in Google Docs in Chromium after upgrading to Lunar

Bold renders fine given simple CSS:

  Ubuntu.
  Ubuntu bold.

This looks specific to Google Docs.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1978980] Re: [amdgpu] Wrong external screen resolution after wake up from sleep

Title:
  [amdgpu] Wrong external screen resolution after wake up from sleep

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in xorg-server package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  After the Ubuntu distro upgrade (upgrade from LTS 20.04 to LTS 22.04,
  running KDE) I started experiencing a problem with external screen
  resolution after the wake up from sleep. The monitor resolution is
  small (1280x768) and doesn't respect the setting prior the sleep
  (1920x1200).

  After the wake up from sleep:

  ```
  > xrandr
  HDMI-A-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
  DisplayPort-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
  DisplayPort-1 connected primary 1280x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right x
axis y axis) 535mm x 339mm
 1280x768  59.94*
 # a list of lower resolutions
  ```

  There is an error when trying to change the setting to the highest
  resolution supported by the monitor (which is not included in the
  above list).

  ```
  > xrandr --output DisplayPort-1 --mode 1920x1200
  xrandr: cannot find mode 1920x1200
  ```

  After the turn off and turn on of the external monitor, the resolution
  is somehow added to the xrandr list:

  ```
  > xrandr
  HDMI-A-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
  DisplayPort-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
  DisplayPort-1 connected primary 1280x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right x
axis y axis) 535mm x 339mm
 1920x1200 59.95 +
 # a list of resolutions
 1280x768  59.94*
 # a list of lower resolutions
  ```

  Now it is possible to change the resolution:

  ```
  > xrandr --output DisplayPort-1 --mode 1920x1200
  # no output, the resolution was successfully changed
  ```

  After the change, the resolution is successfully changed and xrandr
  gives proper output:

  ```
  > xrandr
  HDMI-A-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
  DisplayPort-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
  DisplayPort-1 connected primary 1920x1200+0+0 (normal left inverted right x
axis y axis) 535mm x 339mm
 1920x1200 59.95*+
 # a list of lower resolutions
  ```

  The problem is not present on fresh start. However, it is consistently
  present after the wake up from sleep.

  What can cause the problem and how may I fix it?

  Running AMD based laptop (Ryzen 7 3700U with integrated graphics), the
  external monitor is connected via USB-C. There are no problems with
  laptop screen resolution, only external monitor is affected.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2019045] Re: [snap] New Ubuntu font with normal weight displayed as bold in Google Docs in Chromium after upgrading to Lunar

2023-10-23 Thread Nathan Teodosio
The new font relies on some different mechanism to determine the style
of a given typeface, as each different style points to a same file. The
old font doesn't do that. Maybe that could be tripping the resolution.

Title:
  [snap] New Ubuntu font with normal weight displayed as bold in Google
  Docs in Chromium after upgrading to Lunar

Status in chromium-browser package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2034986] Re: some text became unreadable during a distribution upgrade

2023-10-23 Thread Nathan Teodosio
I see the bug is addressed, but for what it's worth, one more data
point.

I just run into the issue today when doing

  apt remove fonts-ubuntu*

What I didn't notice was that a replacement instead of a removal was
carried out

  fonts-ubuntu (0.83-6ubuntu1 => 0.869-0ubuntu1)

After a while I turned back to Firefox — which I had set up to use
Ubuntu font as default — and it had corrupted font.

That was not during installation, it was my normal several months old
Mantic environment. Restarting Firefox solved the problem. I can
reproduce it with

  apt install fonts-ubuntu fonts-ubuntu-classic-

Bug description:
  [ Impact ]

   * On Ubuntu Mate with the Lunar series, when running
     ubuntu-release-upgrader, the displayed font of running
     applications (including the upgrader) becomes very corrupted.

   * This is not just a display problem, it is also a functional one.
     The release upgrader will have text corrupted to the point
     where a dialog asks a decision, and displays two buttons, but the
     text is unreadable and one has to guess which button is the one
     that carries out their desired action.

   * In the early parts of the upgrader tool, users are told in bold:
     "To prevent data loss close all open applications and documents."
     This is just before the "Start Upgrade" button is available.
     But they may not do so. Many applications may have a corrupted
     font.

   * To address this, an additional environment variable is being
     passed along to pkexec, XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP, as this is the
     critical criteria for making the Mate version of the fix work.

   * Also in the change are
     * an update to tests
 * from pre-build.sh
       * an update of the mirrors.cfg, adding and removing several
 mirrors
       * a refresh of the po files

  [ Test Plan ]

   * acquire an Ubuntu Mate environment running Ubuntu Lunar on amd64

   * as user, run "update-manager -d"

   * monitor the "Distribution Upgrade" screen. During the "Installing
     the upgrades" step (and mind that this step will be long), observe
     the text of the "Distribution Upgrade" screen and verify that the
     font does not corrupt.

   * Repeat the above for Ubuntu Desktop

  [ Where problems could occur ]

   * We are changing, at release time, ubuntu-release upgrader. If we
     are careless, we could regress upgrades for a wider group of users
     than just Ubuntu Mate. That said, it is believed that passing the
     additional XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP variable is relatively low risk.

  [ Other Info ]

   * TBD

I "fixed" this problem by switching from gedit to gnome-text-editor.
People say it's the successor to gedit and is recommended as the

  I have just upgraded to Ubuntu 23.10 (Mantic Minotaur), going through the
regular process of settling in with the new features and so forth, I realised
that the 'locate pointer' is not working as expected.
  When the focus is on a screen element (like this text field that I am
entering information into) I can press the left ctrl button and the border will
flash around the element/text field/button etcetera.
  (I have made a screen cast, if I can I will upload it)
  Previously when pressing the left ctrl button the mouse pointer would be
shown with a circular pulsing image (like a something dropping into calm
water).
  I have read several forums and have looked specifically how to set the locate
pointer option, I have set it in accessibility->pointing & clicking->Locate
Pointer, also via cli with "gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.interface
locate-pointer true" and using the gnome tweaks gui.
  None of these things work.

Re: [Desktop-packages] [Bug 2039340] Re: gnome-shell (login screen) crashes with SIGSEGV in __GI_getenv("EXPAT_ACCOUNTING_DEBUG")

2023-10-23 Thread Anadon
Doing so is no longer representative of my system. I had to transfer
packages co-installed via Guix then reinstall all installed packages due to
required work which required my system in a working state.

Apport needs to change it's hard coded shell path to Python in order to
have made this not an issue from earlier.
