Edubuntu upgrade removed universe repo mantic -> noble

Status in software-properties package in Ubuntu:

Status in ubuntu-release-upgrader package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
Upon upgrade from mantic to noble, my bare metal Edubuntu install
removed the Universe repo from the installation and, therefore, did
not upgrade any Edubuntu-specific packages. I suspect this was caused
by the apt DEB-822 upgrade to the repo and not detecting the universe
repo as required by the Edubuntu installation.

As Edubuntu looks identical to Ubuntu Desktop in terms of installation
on the surface due to it also being a GNOME desktop, I suspect an
assumption may have been derived from this.

Additionally, simply trying `add-apt-repository universe` was
ineffective, so that might need some work as well.

Will attach logs if I can find them, but please do advise what logs you need.

[SRU] Create directories for apt configuration files if they are
  absent

Status in software-properties package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in software-properties source package in Xenial:
  Fix Committed

Bug description:
  Impact
  --

The autopkgtest for 0.96.20.12, which introduces Ubuntu Pro in
  Xenial's software-properties, failed on Dbus tests[1].

The failure is because, at some point in time, the .keep file were
removed from the otherwise empty tests/aptroot/etc/apt/apt.conf.d/.
This caused the Git repository to drop
tests/aptroot/etc/apt/apt.conf.d/ and also its parent, which also
became empty, and the tests try to directly create files in those
  directories, raising the error.

It seems that previous uploaders did not use the Git checkout, as the
offending commit was introduced in Jun 2019 and there were subsequent
uploads that did contain those empty directories.

  Test case
  -

Trigger an autopkgtest against the proposed package version. It must
  succeed.

  Regression Potential

Although the introduced change is idempotent, there could be other
part of the code assuming the directories didn't exist and trying to
create them with a "fail if already exists" approach, causing a
  runtime regression.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2059369] [NEW] gnome Control Center lockup when opening, and navigating to About, need to force quit

2024-03-27 Thread rue
Public bug reported:

When opening the Gnome Control Center first time I was able to navigate
to the About section, then it became unresponsive and I had to force
quit the application. Now every time I open Gnome Control Center it open
at the last section I was at which is About and insistently freezes and
I have to force quit.

Maybe unrelated but when I was in Live mode before installing, opening
Gnome Control Center and navigating to About, I would be prompted for a
new keyring.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2059341] Re: Xorg freeze

2024-03-27 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It sounds like some part of the system has crashed. To
help us find the cause of the crash please follow these steps:

1. Run these commands:
journalctl -b0 > journal.txt
journalctl -b-1 > prevjournal.txt
and attach the resulting text files here.

2. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run:
ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash
Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug.

3. If step 2 failed then look at https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where
ID is the content of file /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine.
Do you find any links to recent problems on that page? If so then please
send the links to us.

Please take care to avoid attaching .crash files to bugs as we are
unable to process them as file attachments. It would also be a security
risk for yourself.

Hello, can you add drivers for the Xbox controller? It's one of the most
used controllers on PC and it's annoying because xpadneo disables secure
boot.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1750146] Re: Xbox (One) Wireless Controller won't connect

2024-03-27 Thread Alexis Salin
Hello, can you add drivers for the Xbox controller? It's one of the most
used controllers on PC and it's annoying because xpadneo disables secure
boot.

Bug description:
Xbox One Wireless Controllers (Model 1708) refuse to connect via bluetooth
with Ubuntu 17.10 in the gnome-control-center.
Placing the controller into pairing mode makes it visible on the Bluetooth
Devices list and the device pairs, but does not make the full connection needed
to pull the controller out of pairing mode.

This renders my controller unusable with my Ubuntu PC unless I want to
resort to using the wire (microUSB).

Bug description:
Boot animations start too late to be useful

Modern systems spend all their boot time (a couple of seconds)
decompressing the kernel. During that time the user only sees the
static BIOS logo (ACPI BGRT). Then when Plymouth can finally start
animating, the startup process is already finished and there's
virtually no time left to show any useful animations.

  This could be fixed in:

grub: By adding a splash under the BIOS logo to show some progress
_before_ a Linux kernel is even started

  and/or

plymouth: By preferencing legacy framebuffer devices (like EFI) over
DRM, if we find those are available a few seconds sooner. That would
also fix bug 1868240 completely, and bug 1836858 mostly as the flicker
moves to when the login screen starts.

Bug description:
  [ Impact ]

Kernel (and systemd) log messages appear during boot for many
machines, when the user should be seeing only the BIOS logo and/or
  Plymouth splash screens.

  [ Workaround ]

On most machines you can hide the problem by using these kernel parameters
together:
    quiet splash loglevel=3 fastboot

  [ Original Description ]

Since upgrading from 20.04.6 Desktop to 22.04, the boot screen is not
as clean as it used to be.

Basically, the flow used to be in 20.04:

GRUB > Splash screen > Login prompt

  Currently in 22.04:

GRUB > Splash screen > Messages (in the attached file) > Splash screen
again for a sec > Login prompt

All of those messages already existed in 20.04, the difference is that
they were not appearing during boot.

I was able to get rid of the "usb" related messages by just adding
"loglevel=0" in GRUB. Currently is "quiet loglevel=0 splash".

Regarding the fsck related message, I can get rid of them by adding
  "fsck.mode=skip".

However, I do not want to just disable fsck or set the loglevel to 0.
This is not a sustainable solution.

Something definitely changed here. These messages are not of enough
relevance to be shown at boot by default, and they should remain
hidden like they were in Focal.

Obviously a minor issue, but important to the whole look and feel of
  the OS for desktop.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2059293] [NEW] autopkgtests fail on i386 on the new testsuite

2024-03-27 Thread Simon Chopin
Public bug reported:

The autopkgtests fail on i386 for version 2:1.0.27-1. In the previous
version the test name was "stress" while the failing one is "testsuite",
so presumably this isn't a regression so much as the new testsuite
failing due to i386 being a partial arch.

Relevant parts of the logs:

506s config.status: creating tests/Makefile
506s config.status: executing depfiles commands
506s CC stress.o
507s CC testlib.o
507s CCLD stress
507s /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lusb-1.0: No such file or directory
507s collect2: error: ld returned 1 exit status

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2047256] Re: Ubuntu 24.04 Some image thumbnails no longer displayed

Usually 'Fix Released' means RELEASED, when the fix is blocked in
proposed the status is 'Fix Committed' so 'Fix Released' is confusing.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2059267] [NEW] Ubuntu patch reverting another Ubuntu patch

2024-03-27 Thread Nathan Teodosio
Public bug reported:

Downstream Update-style-to-the-same-than-flutter-installer.patch[1] is
reverting a great deal of gis-apps-page.{c,ui} that are introduced by
(also downstream controlled) 0001-Add-Ubuntu-mode-with-special-
pages.patch[2].

I think that makes maintaining those patches more complex than necessary
and suggest to merge them together.

Status in gnome-initial-setup package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
Ubuntu 24.04 LTS with gnome-initial-setup 46 Alpha shows these
  screens:

  Help improve Ubuntu
  Privacy (Location Services)
Done (You can use App Center to install apps)

This is a change from Ubuntu 23.10 where the first screen was Online
  Accounts. See LP: #2049513

Would it be useful to add an intro screen instead of immediately
asking for permission to send data?

GNOME Initial Setup has a page available. We may want to adjust the
wording though since there is no "making an account" for existing
users especially now that Online Accounts is no longer integrated
  here. Screenshot attached.

2024-03-27 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for your bug report. Going through 'otherlocations' or
directly doing ctrl-L /etc shouldn't make a difference. It works fine
here, are you using listview or the iconview? Did you scroll at the end
of the list to check if they are there (the sorting can be counter-
intuitive but here they are listed at the end and not at what would be
their alphabetic order without the leading dot)

  Underruns, dropouts or crackling sound

Status in alsa-driver package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
Since the last three weeks' updates, I have encountered several
challenges with the audio functionality on my system. Primarily, upon
starting my laptop, the audio often fails to work, displaying "Dummy
Output." To resolve this, I find myself needing to restart the laptop
two or three times before the audio becomes functional.

Even when the audio is working, I've noticed a recurring issue where,
after playing video or audio for approximately 2-3 minutes, the sound
starts crackling and buzzing. The intensity of these distortions
gradually increases, resembling the static interference on a radio
station with a weak signal. This issue persists even when using 3.5mm
headphones, requiring the use of a USB headset or Bluetooth headphones
  to enjoy distortion-free audio.

Furthermore, I have observed that, regardless of the Ubuntu version
(ranging from 22.04 to 22.04.3), I face difficulties changing the
microphone output settings when an external audio peripheral, such as
a USB headset, 3.5mm headphones, or Bluetooth headphones, is
connected. The OS appears to exclusively utilize the microphone from
the connected peripheral, making it impossible to switch to the
  laptop's built-in microphone.

For your reference, here are the specifications of my laptop and the
Ubuntu version I am currently using:

  Laptop: Dell Vostro 3400
  CPU: 11th Gen Intel i5-1135G7
GPU: Intel TigerLake-LP GT2 Iris Xe
  Memory: 2490MiB / 19720MiB
  Resolution: 1920x1080
  OS: Ubuntu 22.04.3 LTS x86_64
  Kernel: 6.5.0-14-generic
  DE: GNOME 42.9
  Shell: bash 5.1.16
Sound Card: Card: HDA Intel PCH, Chip: Cirrus Logic CS8409/CS42L42

**UPDATE 12/02/2024 Noticed that every time my laptop fan starts spinning the
crackling sound appears, after fan stops the crackling sound disappear.
**UPDATE 19/03/2024 I did a software update to the linux kernel 6.5.0-26, now
i get a dummy output in sound even if i restart the system many times, and if i
use my Bluetooth headphone i can't use the mic, neither the mic of the laptop
or of the headphone (there is no option is the settings to choose from) it's
all blank.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2059247] [NEW] Cheese does not list all webcams

2024-03-27 Thread srnissen
Public bug reported:

## Summary:

Cheese finds different webcams when run as "cheese" and "sudo cheese"

## Expected:

When running cheese without sudo, preferences->webcam lists all my
cameras, once each.

## Actual:

When running cheese without sudo, only the external camera is found, and
it is listed twice.

When running cheese with sudo, all cameras are found - and also listed
twice.

## Details:

Running normally, under preferences->webcam, cheese lists:

- CameraA (V4L2)
- CameraA (V4L2)

(Yes it lists the same camera twice.)

Running cheese with sudo, the same dropdown contains:

- Integrated Camera: Integrated C
- Integrated Camera: Integrated I
- CameraA
- Integrated Camera: Integrated C
- Integrated Camera: Integrated I
- CameraA

Again, it lists every camera twice (And for some reason strips "(V4L2)"
from the name of the external camera)

## Machine information

lsb_release -rd: Pop!_OS 22.04 LTS

Cheese version: 41.1-1build1 500

Running lshw with/wihtout sudo also results in two different lists -
without sudo, only CameraA is found. With sudo, the integrated camera
appears.

(Unfortunately, ubuntu-bug is weird on pop!_os or I'd report through
there)

** Affects: cheese (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

Bug description:
  [ Impact ]

There exist no formal API to do the FCC unlock procedure[1] in the
  latest version of the modemmanger.

But there is a merged commit[2] that provide this functionality for
intel WWAN cards in the upstream project.

Lenovo have several laptops using the Fibocom WWAN cards (Intel XMM
7560), and Lenovo are struggling to give a decent way to run the FCC
  unlock service without this.

Until the device is unlocked, the end users are not able to use the
SIM cards, and some of the affected devices have already been shipped.
The end users now have to go to the Lenovo support website and
download a few scripts and binaries to unlock the device to make their
  SIM cards work.

The Lenovo wants this patch to be included in jammy, then they can
provide the FCC unlock service and manage it in OEM-archive, so the
end users can use SIM cards as soon as they receive the laptop.

  [ Test Plan ]

OEM enablement engineers and Lenovo engineers will help to test if the
FCC unlock would work on certain laptops with the help of a custom
package[1] provided by Lenovo which contains the FCC unlock script.

[ Where problems could occur ]

This is a completely new feature to support Intel WWAN cards mutal
authentication, which does not affect other existing features.

But the feature itself might have bugs and glitches since it is a
brand new one and is not widely tested by the laptop vendors, still it
  is better than nothing.

  [ Other Info ]

  [1] FCC unlock procedure:
https://modemmanager.org/docs/modemmanager/fcc-unlock/
  [2] intel-mutual-authentication: new service, fcc-lock:
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/mobile-broadband/libmbim/-/merge_requests/157
    - when the device is first shipped or comes out of the factory,
it should be protected with a lock till the device reaches
the end user. This FCC lock feature will ensure the device
  is secured till its unlocked.

Bug description:
  [Impact]
On systems equipped with reduced blanking panel, mirror mode can result to no
image on external monitor.
The reason is due to current fallback modes don't have pixelclock for reduced
blanking, so inadequate refresh rate is used to mode set, and result with
atomic commit failure.

  [Fix]
  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/-/merge_requests/3449
Add reduced blanking (RB) to fallback modes, so mutter can use RB mode to
meet pixelclock requirement in order to pick the right refresh rate.

  [Test]
Connect an external monitor to affected system. Use the monitor hotkey to
switch to mirror mode or use GNOME control center to choose mirror mode. With
the patch included, the issue is no longer observed.

  [Where problems could occur]
The modelines of reduced blanking have reversed Hsync and Vsync flags, so if
the driver doesn't handle those flags correctly, the atomic modeset/commit may
fail.

I haven't observe any issue on Intel/AMD/Nvidia GPU so far.

When use the ThinkPluse xt99 bluetooth head set to run the test
com.canonical.certification::bluetooth/audio_record_playback, it cannot record
the sound and playback.
It seems this device cannot switch to Hand free mode in this platform.

  [Steps to reproduce]
Connect the ThinkPluse xt99, use the Handfree mode, then try to record some
voice.

  [Expected result]
The bluetooth headset ThinkPluse xt99 can use as a MIC to input sound.

  [Actual result]
The bluetooth headset xt99 cannot work in the Handfree mode.

  [Failure rate]
  100%

  [Impact]
With the current Ubuntu 22.04 oem image, we try to connect the LENOVO
XT99 bt headset and let it work in HFP mode, we select HFP profile
from gnome sound-setting, but the microphone will not auto change to
bt microphone and the bt output could not work too. So this BT headset
could only work in A2DP mode with the current 22.04 OEM image.

And we tried ubuntu 22.04 generic image, mantic image and noble image,
none of them could make the headset work in HFP mode.

  [Fix]
Cherry-pick a pulseaudio commit from upstream.

  [Test]
I installed ubuntu 22.04 and 23.10 on 2 different Thinkpad laptops, then
upgraded the pulseaudio from my ppa (ppa:hui.wang/pa-testing), in theory my
change only affects bluetooth audio devices, it will not bring any impact to
non-audio bluetooth devices, here I did the test with 7 bluetooth audio devices
and 2 non-audio devices:

BT audio devices (pairing, connection, re-connection, playback and capture
all worked well):
  PLT_BBTGO2 (headset)
  Xiaomi Air3 SE (headset)
  Crusher Wireless (headset)
  SOAIY S18 (sound box)
  HK Soho Wireless (headset)
  Thinkplus XT99 (headset)
  Wl-1000X (headset)

BT non-audio devices (pairing, connection, re-connection, key input all
worked well):
  BT3.0 Keyboard
  The Pinao 2 keyboard

  [Where problems could occur]
This change will impact bt headset negotiation process in the pulseaudio,
so the possiblity of regression is limited to bt headset, it could make
the bt headset fail to connect, but this possibility is very low, we tested
the patch with different bt headset and bt speaker, all worked well.

none of them could make the headset work in HFP mode.

Actually please hold that for a moment, I had forgotten to enable other
architectures in the PPA and a test is failing in Armhf.

Bug description:
  Feature Freeze Exception Request
  --
There are only 2 packages in Ubuntu main that use freerdp2: remmina and
gnome-remote-desktop. It is requested to switch both to freerdp3. Therefore
only one version of freerdp will be in main. freerdp2 will be demoted to
universe since many universe packages use it and are not prepared to switch to
freerdp3.

This also requests updating gnome-control-center to fully enable the
  features of gnome-remote-desktop 46.

  Impact
  --
A headline feature of GNOME 46 is support as a Remote Desktop server without
requiring someone to already be logged in locally ("headless" mode). This
feature requires gnome-remote-desktop 46. gnome-remote-desktop 46 requires
freerdp3.

Impact if this does not happen
  --
  - We would need to patch gnome-control-center to use the older Remote Desktop
panel (or at least hide the new tab for Remote Login)
  - We would need to keep using gnome-remote-desktop 45 instead of 46. The
gnome-remote-desktop upstream maintainers would be unhappy with this decision.
gnome-remote-desktop 45 was tested against Mutter 45. Changes in Mutter 46 may
require changes in gnome-remote-desktop for things to work well although a
simple test showed that basic remote desktop seems to work ok with the
mismatch. (See comment #1 from upstream developer.)

Why this did not land sooner
  ---
It required the packaging of a new source package freerdp3. And we had to do
this sooner than Debian. Sorry too many things to do before Feature Freeze and
this did not make it.

  Affected Packages
  -
  - gnome-remote-desktop 45 -> 46
  - gnome-control-center (to update the Remote Desktop settings page)
  - remmina 1.4.34 -> 1.4.35 and swap build-depends. Remmina 1.4.34 did not
work with freerdp 3.3 in my testing
  - gnome-connections (build-dependency swap): Not required by other changes
and not in Main but makes sense to switch it also

  Affected Flavors

Only Ubuntu Desktop and Edubuntu ships gdm3, gnome-control-center,
gnome-remote-desktop. (Cinnamon 23.04 and daily 23.10 also ships
gnome-control-center but this appears to be a bug since they ship
cinnamon-control-center and is likely already fixed in noble-proposed)

Remmina is included in Ubuntu Desktop, Cinnamon, Kylin, and Unity.

gnome-connections has no reverse dependencies or recommends.

  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-remote-desktop/-/blob/46.rc/NEWS

  https://gitlab.com/Remmina/Remmina/-/blob/rel/v1.4.35/CHANGELOG.md

gnome-control-center 46~beta was already in Ubuntu 24.04 LTS before Feature
Freeze. It will be updated to 46.0. The relevant part here is whether we use
the 46~beta version of the Remote Desktop page or the 46.0 version.

  Build Logs

from this FFe.

  Testing Done
  ---
  1. From Ubuntu 23.10 client using Remmina, I was successfully able to connect
to Ubuntu 24.04 LTS host using GNOME Shell 46 RC and GNOME Remote Desktop 46
RC. Remote control worked.

  2. From Ubuntu 24.04 LTS client with Remmina 1.4.35 built with
freerdp3, I was able to connect to Ubuntu 23.10 host. Remote control
  worked.

  3. From Ubuntu 24.04 LTS client with GNOME Connections 46 RC built
with freerdp3, I was able to connect to Ubuntu 23.10 host. Remote
  control worked.

  4. I added a new Remote Login test case to
  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DesktopTeam/TestPlans/RemoteDesktop and
verified that remote login worked. Notably, enabling this changes the
port for the older service, now called "Desktop Sharing" to 3390.
Since 3389 is the default port, users would then need to manually
specific port 3390 for Desktop Sharing in their remote connection app
  (Remmina, GNOME Connections, etc.).

  # KWallet's client API is still in use in KDE/Plasma. It's DBus API relies

Bug description:
  [ Impact ]

When using software rendering on Xorg (so usually just in VMs), some
parts of app windows may fail to redraw.

  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/-/issues/2880

  [ Test Plan ]

  1. Set up a virtual machine without graphics acceleration.
  2. Log into 'Ubuntu on Xorg'.
  3. Open Settings > About and verify Graphics = llvmpipe (or "Software
Rendering"), and Windowing System = X11.
  4. sudo snap install chromium
  5. Open Chromium and find a web page with lots of text. Plain text without
any links and staying at the top of the page will work best because you don't
want to trigger any scrolling.
  6. Start selecting text with the mouse and while holding the button move the
mouse up and down rapidly. Avoid triggering any page scrolling.
  7. Release the mouse button in roughly the middle of the area of text that
was selected.
  8. Verify the remaining text selection is contiguous and not broken into
multiple disconnected text selections (the bug).
  9. Repeat steps 7 and 8 several times to be sure.

[ Where problems could occur ]

The fix adds a new synchronization point between the compositor and X
server. This should be inconsequential, although there is a "sync
ring" in mutter used for this, and if a mistake occurs there then
other parts of the desktop could appear to stop responding in Xorg
  sessions.

  [ Other Info ]

This is a regression that started in 3.37.3 due to
  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/-/commit/551101c65cda.

Seems like an old issue that you can hit at random in highly parallel

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2055530] Re: Mutter (sometimes) fails to build with [fatal error: meta/meta-enum-types.h: No such file or directory]

2024-03-27 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package mutter - 42.9-0ubuntu7

---
mutter (42.9-0ubuntu7) jammy; urgency=medium

  * Add build-Set-built-headers-as-libmutter_dep-sources.patch to prevent
occasional build failures depending on parallelism (LP: #2055530)
  * Add cogl-gl-framebuffer-Fix-inverted-test-in-ensure_bits_init.patch to
fix test failures in mutter:cogl+cogl/conform / framebuffer-get-bits
when Mesa >= 23.1.1 (LP: #2055519)

mutter (42.9-0ubuntu6) jammy; urgency=medium

  [ Kai-Heng Feng ]
  * Fix mirror mode on reduced blanking panel. (LP: #2051074)

  [ Daniel van Vugt ]
  * Add compositor-x11-Sync-again-at-the-end-of-before_paint.patch
to fix incomplete redraws in X11 virtual machines (LP: #2054510)

Bug description:

Mutter failed to build, only once, on jammy amd64:

  In file included from ../src/backends/meta-backend-private.h:39,
   from ../src/backends/x11/meta-backend-x11.h:31,
   from ../src/backends/x11/nested/meta-backend-x11-nested.h:25,

meta/meta-enum-types.h: No such file or directory
     41 | #include "meta/meta-enum-types.h"
    | ^~~~
  compilation terminated.

Seems like an old issue that you can hit at random in highly parallel
builds. Because meta-enum-types.h is auto-generated its consumers need
  to declare stronger dependencies.

  [ Test Plan ]

  Build mutter.

[ Where problems could occur ]

More build failures or accidentally depending on meson features that
  don't exist in jammy.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2054510] Re: Incomplete screen redraws in virtual machines running Xorg

2024-03-27 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
Yes, please make sure the flaky tests are marked as such in the
autopkgtests. SRUs are not released until either the test passes or the
package version is marked as badtest in the britney hints.

(A retry has caused it to pass on armhf)

Status in mutter package in Ubuntu:

Status in mutter source package in Jammy:

Status in mutter source package in Mantic:
