[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1616912] [NEW] Can't drag & dropping files from HDD to USB key: Nautilus claims the key is read-only

2016-08-25 Thread Bruno Girin
Public bug reported:

When dragging and dropping files from my local disk to a connected USB
key, Nautilus claims that the key is read-only. Copying the same files
via the command line works.

Steps to reproduce:
- Plug in a USB key that has space on it and that is not write protected
- Drag and drop a file from an another device to the key in Nautilus

Expected result: the file is copied

Actual result: Nautilus shows an error window that claims the key is
read only (see screen shot)

Workaround: copy the files via the command line

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1241986] Re: Cannot connect to WPA/WPA2, EAP-PEAP, MSCHAPV2 network

2015-04-16 Thread Bruno Girin
In order to add a bit of context, one example of a network that uses
PEAP is Eduroam, which is a Europe-wide university wi-fi network so
solvign this would make a lot of students happy. For reference, here are
the instructions given by UCL to their students for laptops:

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1174259] [NEW] Network Manager sometimes fails to reconnect to WPA protected wi-fi network

2013-04-29 Thread Bruno Girin
Public bug reported:

I regularly connect to two different wi-fi networks that use WPA/WPA2
Personal security. When the laptop accidentally loses connection to the
network, it sometimes fails to re-establish the connection and asks for
the password repeatedly. The only solution to fix that is to reboot.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Connect to a wi-fi network with WPA/WPA2 Personal security,
2. Accidentally lose connection (by moving around with the laptop for example),
3. Network Manager attempts to reconnects, fails and asks for the network's
password again,
4. Enter the password and click Connect,
5. Network Manager fails to connect and goes back to step 3.

Expected behaviour:
NM should reconnect without any issue.

Note that this would never happen with 12.10 on the same machine so it
looks like a regression.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1173231] [NEW] Login screen sometimes fails to appear when booting computer

2013-04-26 Thread Bruno Girin
Public bug reported:

When booting my laptop, the screen alternates between the Ubuntu logo
and a black screen a couple of times before showing the login screen.
Occasionally, the login screen does not appear and a black screen with
just the mouse cursor appears instead.

during boot or any other issue but I'm happy to debug if someone can
give me pointers on how to investigate the problem.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1170346] [NEW] Desktop freeze during update followed by boot problem and xorg crash

2013-04-18 Thread Bruno Girin
Public bug reported:

I'm not sure this is the correct package nor whether it's a single bug
but I'm happy to analyse further if someone can help me do so. I just
did an apt-get dist-upgrade on my machine and here's what happened:

1. Ran sudo apt-get update  sudo apt-get dist-upgrade;
2. At the point of setting up man DB, fans starts spinning up, unity locks up
(apart from the mouse pointer); this seems to have been happening recently as a
result of GPU lock ups;
3. CTRL+ATL+F2, logged in via console to force a reboot;
4. Laptop attempted to close processes but never managed to do so (while fan
stayed on full speed);
5. Forcefully shut down the laptop;
6. On restart, I get a screen displayed saying that the system is on low
graphics mode;
7. CTRL+ALT+F2 again to reboot;
8. Reboot happens as expected and I can log in to Unity;
9. A few seconds after login, apport fires up reporting an XOrg crash.

The /var/log directory contains a number of apport log files that all
look something like:

ERROR: apport (pid 1556) Thu Apr 18 13:53:22 2013: called for pid 1381, signal 6

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1134112] Re: Xorg crashed with SIGABRT in OsAbort()

2013-03-29 Thread Bruno Girin
I also have the same symptoms as Lorenzo (comment #8) regarding low
graphics mode, especially during a warm reboot: cold boot seems not to
show the issue.

Chris, I can't find the TLB Invalidate bug. Can you link to it from this
bug please? I would like to help contribute to that one if that's the
root cause.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1157649] Re: GPU hang

2013-03-23 Thread Bruno Girin
Just in case that's useful, here's my i915_error_state too. I understand
that it's fixed in Raring but Raring has not been released yet so for
all users who do not fancy upgrading to a pre-release version, is there
a way to backport the fix? The reason I ask is because the bug is really
debilitating on those machines that are affected.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1157649] Re: GPU hang

2013-03-21 Thread Bruno Girin
Chris, is there a possibility to backport the fix to Quantal? It really
makes the computer difficult to use as it hangs every few minutes, in
particular when scrolling. This has been happening to me since the
kernel update on Wednesday 20th March (when this bug was first
reported).

What info is required to diagnose the problem? I'm happy to do as much
investigation and digging as necessary to find the root cause.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1061227] [NEW] Cannot select text reliably with the mouse in OpenOffice Writer

2012-10-03 Thread Bruno Girin
Public bug reported:

When in LibreOffice Writer, text selection with the mouse will sometimes
work, sometimes not and is generally unreliable.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Open a Writer document in OpenOffice,
2. Press the left mouse on a piece of text and keep pressed,
3. Start dragging the mouse to select a piece of text.

Expected behaviour:
The selected text is highlighted until you release the mouse button.

Actual behaviour:
More often than not, the text will stop being highlighted sometime during the
drag, often when the drag goes over a word boundary but not always.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 998239] Re: Login screen forces same resolution on all displays in non-identical multi-display setup

2012-05-14 Thread Bruno Girin
Hi Sebastien, it is the default Ubuntu greeter. Disconnecting and re-
connecting the external display while on the greeter fixes the problem
(at least temporarily, I haven't rebooted yet).

Title:
  Login screen forces same resolution on all displays in non-identical
  multi-display setup

Status in “lightdm” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  In a multi-display setup where displays have different resolutions
  (e.g. external display connected to laptop), the login screen forces
  the same resolution on both displays. For example in my setup I have a
  laptop with a 16:9 ratio and an external screen with a 4:3 ratio. The
  background appears on both displays and the login box appears on the
  laptop's built-in display. However, both displays are forced to a 4:3
  resolution that only fits the external screen.

  Steps to reproduce:
  1. Connect an external display to a laptop with different ratio (e.g. 16:9
laptop and 4:3 external display)
  2. Start the laptop
  3. The login screen appears

  Expected behaviour:
  Each display shows an image that is scaled according to their individual
resolutions

  Actual behaviour:
  Both displays are forced to a degraded resolution that can be displayed by
both. E.g. in my case the laptop has a max resolution of 1366x768 while the
external display has a max resolution of 1280x1024: the resolution used by the
login screen is 1024x768 i.e. a 4:3 resolution (like the external display) but
with 768 vertical resolution (which is the max vertical resolution of the
laptop).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 991912] [NEW] Confusing button labelling on disk eject dialogue

2012-04-30 Thread Bruno Girin
Public bug reported:

When burning a CD ISO to an physical CD using a CD drive that does not
support software eject, Brasero displays a message dialogue asking the
user to manually eject the CD from the drive (see attached screen shot).
Although the message is reasonably clear, there is only one button in
this dialogue labelled Cancel. This is extremely confusing as it
suggests that clicking that button will cancel the just finished write
operation. Furthermore, the dialogue offers no alternative action that
would make sense. A better wording for this button would be Done.
Close should be avoided as users may wonder whether this closes the
drive or the dialogue.

Steps to reproduce
1. Download an ISO (e.g. Ubuntu server 12.04);
2. Burn the ISO using Brasero and a CD drive that cannot be opened via software;
3. The dialogue appears with its confusing Cancel button.

  button in this dialogue labelled Cancel. This is extremely confusing
  as it suggests that clicking that button will cancel the just finished
  write operation. Furthermore, the dialogue offers no alternative
  action that would make sense. A better wording for this button would
  be Done. Close should be avoided as users may wonder whether this
  closes the drive or the dialogue.

  Steps to reproduce
  1. Download an ISO (e.g. Ubuntu server 12.04);
  2. Burn the ISO using Brasero and a CD drive that cannot be opened via
software;
  3. The dialogue appears with its confusing Cancel button.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 963562] [NEW] The network manager app icon shows it disconnected when it is successfully connected to wi-fi

2012-03-23 Thread Bruno Girin
Public bug reported:

The network manager application indicator shows the computer as
disconnected from the network even though it is successfully connected
to a known wi-fi network and can access the internet as normal. This
happens in Unity 2D.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Start a Unity session in range of a well-known wi-fi network,
2. The computer connects to the wi-fi network but the application indicator
stays greyed out,
3. Start a web browser,
4. Go to any URL in the browser to confirm that internet access works,
5. The browser displays the content of the URL.

Expected behaviour:
In step 2, the application indicator's status should be consistent with the
connection status.

  Mobile broadband cannot be resumed after suspending laptop

Status in “network-manager” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  After suspending my laptop while mobile broadband was connected and

  need to log out and log back in again to be able to use it again. This
  is a mobile broadband connection on Vodafone contract using a data SIM

  Steps to reproduce:
  1. Connect to mobile broadband
  2. Suspend the computer (e.g. by closing the lid)
  3. Resume the session (e.g. by opening the lid and unlocking the computer)
  4. Mobile broadband does not reconnect
  5. Open network menu to re-connect: two entries are shown under Mobile
Broadband: one that is enabled, one that is greyed out
  6. Click on the enabled entry under Mobile Broadband
  7. A notification bubble appears saying that mobile broadband is
disconnected; the entries in the network menu revert to the normal entries
before step 1 above
  8. Open the network menu again and click on the mobile broadband provider:
entries in the menu revert to the state in step 5 and mobile broadband does not
connect

  Expected behaviour:
  Mobile broadband should do one of:
  1. automatically reconnect in step 4, or
  2. fully disconnect to revert to a clean state
  Option 2 ensures that the machine does not automatically reconnect to a
network connection that may cost money and gives the chance to connect to wi-fi

allow option 1 or 2 (same as what MeeGo Harmattan does) would work.

  List formatting partially lost when saving as RTF

Status in The OpenOffice.org Suite:
  Confirmed
Status in “libreoffice” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid
Status in “openoffice.org” package in Ubuntu:
  Won't Fix

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: openoffice.org

  When saving a document that contains bullet lists as RTF, part of the
  list formatting is lost: some items have the expected formatting,
  others don't.

  Steps to reproduce:
  1. Open the attached list.odt file [1]
  2. Go to File - Save As
  3. Select Rich Text Format (.rtf) in the file type drop down box
  4. Click save
  5. Close Open Office
  6. Open the saved RTF file with Open Office

  Expected behaviour
  The RTF version of the file has the same formatting as the ODT version.

  Actual behaviour
  In the RTF version of the file, some of the list items have lost their bullet
and identation (see attached screenshot [2] for a side by side comparison).

  When I started Thunderbird after the beta 2 update, it would not

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 932375] Re: gedit crashed with SIGSEGV in instance_get_window()

2012-02-15 Thread Bruno Girin
I added the gedit-valencia-plugin package as the retrace shows it
crashed in libvalencia. In addition, the fact that it crashed in
instance_active_document_is_vala_file() may be a hint: as far as I
remember I did not have any document open when the crash occured.

** Also affects: gedit-valencia-plugin (Ubuntu)
   Importance: Undecided
   Status: New

** Visibility changed to: Public

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 864698] Re: Gwibber's New Message box is very CPU intensive

2012-02-11 Thread Bruno Girin
Bilal, it's improved a lot since I filed this bug. I've just upgraded to
Precise so will re-check that on 12.04. However, at the moment I can't
because Gwibber is crashing at startup (for which I've filed another
bug).

Title:
  Gwibber's New Message box is very CPU intensive

Status in “gwibber” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  The New Message box is very CPU intensive, to the point that when
  typing a message, it takes a noticeable amount of time for characters
  to register. This impacts the rest of the computing experience as the
  mouse movements become jagged and the whole UI is less responsive than
  normal. A quick check using System Monitor shows that when the New
  Message box is open, whatever is running consumes more that a full
  core on an Intel i5 processor (see attached screenshot).

  Steps to reproduce:
  1. Start the system monitor to keep an eye on performance,
  2. Click the envelope in the panel and select Broadcast / Messages to open
Gwibber,
  3. Click on the New Message button,
  4. The New Message entry box opens,
  5. Start typing in the box.

  Expected behaviour:
  The new message box should allow the user to enter a message without any
negative performance impact.

  Actual behaviour:
  When the new message box is open, CPU usage shoots up and stays very high
irrespective of whether the user enters any data in the box. As a result, data
entry is visibly jagged and so are mouse movements and anything else related to
using the machine.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 860898] [NEW] Empathy ignores remember this choice for future connections on untrusted certificate error dialogue

2011-09-27 Thread Bruno Girin
Public bug reported:

When starting Empathy, if it tries to connect to servers that present
untrusted certificates (in particular self-signed as with Gmail or
Facebook), there is a check box to ask Empathy to remember the action
for next time. However setting that check box has no effect.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Start empathy with a Gmail of Facebook account;
2. The untrusted certificate dialogue appears (see screen shot);
3. Click on the remember this choice for future connections check box;
4. Click Continue;
5. Close Empathy (go offline or log out);
6. Restart Empathy.

Expected behaviour
Empathy should connect to the account without popping up the untrusted
certificate dialogue.

Actual behaviour:
Empathy presents the untrusted certificate dialogue again despite the user
request to remember the previous action.

Note: I completely understand that untrusted certificates are a security
risk and that users should be notified. However, when it happens all the
time on well know services, ignoring user requests to remember the
action will eventually lead users to ignore that type of warnings and
click through anyway.
