Title:
  video fullscreen playback emits keys (control/key sequences) into
  current foreground window

Status in chromium-browser package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Playing a video in full-screen mode (html5) emits keys into foreground
("ghost keyboard" inputs).
  These key sequences affect the currently selected/foregrounded Window, e.g.
the goneme-terminal flickers the text up and down, changes window focus and
inputs control characters scrambling the typed commandline.
  Controlled typing on the commandline is nearly impossible this way, text is
garbled (see screenshot attachment).
  Pausing the video stops this behaviour.
  This happens on a fresh profile without any extensions/addons.

  example youtube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JHEHPRDVEp4

  I logged the keys with
  xev 2>&1|while /bin/true ; do read ans; echo $ans;date -Ins ;done >
/tmp/xev.timestamped.log

  and add the output here as attachment. From the log it seems to be
  these type of repeating sequences (disregard beginning and end of
  file, since it is mouse over xev movements):

  Currently I doo not know how to debug this further, is there a
  possibility to debug the video playback in chromium browser?

  Thanks for looking into it,
  Martin

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1759667] Re: password field unusable if display configuration changes while on screen lock

of login, too.

Title:
  password field unusable if display configuration changes while on
  screen lock

Status in gnome-screensaver package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  I often lose the ability to type in my password on a locked screen
  (gnome3), if the display configuration changes.

  Steps to reproduce:
  * plug off external display
  * lock screen in gnome (ctrl-alt-l)
  * plug in external display

  After these steps the password field cannot get focus or be used to type
password in.
  Sometimes also the buttons are without function, not clickable with mouse or
reachable with keyboard shortcuts.

  Plugging off the previously added display can sometimes help to recover to
responsive elements, but often the password field stays unresponsive.
  A workaround is then to use the "change user" button, and logging into the
account. This usually works and circumvents a stalled gnome-screensaver.

  Additionally, while testing for this bug report, I could use the
  desktop (which should stay locked) for quite some time (~20 seconds),
  before gnome-screensaver took over and kicked in again. This happened
  after plugging off an external display and the corresponding display
  settings change.

  The latter could be a serious issue, related to bugs about resume reported
elsewhere, e.g.
  #1509711
  since a display change can be easily forced.

  Package: gnome-screensaver
  Version: 3.6.1-7ubuntu4

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1509711] Re: Screen temporarily not locked when coming out of suspend

2018-03-28 Thread Martin Weis
I experience this sometimes (currently running 16.04 LTS), you can
easily enlarge the time by:

* high load, have processes running taking 100% CPU
* a lot of used RAM
* slow I/O (hard disk)

E.g., on a netbook, I was regularly even able to type in commands on open
shells, start or close programs.
It still happens on a decent machine, but less often and with much shorter
"flashing".

Ran into the same issue, and was stuck with apt not being able to get to
a working, clean state, see below.

I had to use aptitude (instead of apt), which gave a proper solution and
managed to deinstall, finally my solution was:
aptitude remove kde-telepathy-minimal
apt remove 'unity-*'
apt autoremove
apt remove kubuntu-desktop
apt install --reinstall kubuntu-desktop

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1278429] Re: evolution-alarm-notify hangs on snooze

2016-07-16 Thread Martin Weis
Upstream says the fix is in more recent versions, but could be
backported:

> [...]your issue is fixed by commit for bug #709162, which was
(stable-) released as 3.12.0 only. The patch can be backported by
respective distribution maintainers.

Currently I have:
Version: 3.10.4-0ubuntu2
Ubuntu 14.04.4 LTS

xenial (gnome) delivers 3.18.5.2-0ubuntu1, which should have the fix
already (untested).

Title:
  evolution-alarm-notify hangs on snooze

Status in evolution package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  The alarm notification window becomes unresponsive on clicking
  "snooze".

  This usually happens, after I get updates in an ics file that is monitored by
evolution and the due alarms are popping up.
  The window is modal (in foreground) and does not respond, the only way to get
rid of it is a kill command:
  $  killall evolution-alarm-notify

  I started with debugging option on:
  $ killall evolution-addressbook-factory
  $ killall evolution-source-registry
  $ killall evolution-calendar-factory
  $ LANG=C ALARMS_DEBUG=1 evolution 2>&1 | tee /tmp/evolution.debug.log

  and got a crash on a notification, so apport should have sent another
  crash report at around Mo 10. Feb 13:20:00 CET 2014

  The first log following here is the log for a non-crash, snooze did
  work this one time, but here is corrupt double linked list error in
  the end (took some time to appear, ca. 2 minutes). This was
  unfortunately not logged in the logfile (evolution.debug.log), only
  appeared on console. The snooze reminder did not show up.

  The second log is a log with a frozen notification window (see below and in
evolution.debug2.log).
  I will add both logfiles with small comments (#) in it.

  To me it looks like the function "tray_list_remove_data_async" is
  causing these issues.

  BTW, why is acroread starting?!? (<- non-issue here)
  Thanks for looking into this.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1544880] Re: video fullscreen playback emits keys (control/key sequences) into current foreground window

2016-02-28 Thread Martin Weis
It seems *not* related to video, some (but not all) fullscreen
applications show the issue (e.g. plain chromium window). So it may be a
gnome issue (I use gnome-flashback here).

  Playing a video in full-screen mode (html5) emits keys into foreground

  These key sequences affect the currently selected/foregrounded Window, e.g.
the goneme-terminal flickers the text up and down, changes window focus and
inputs control characters scrambling the typed commandline.
  Controlled typing on the commandline is nearly impossible this way, text is
garbled (see screenshot attachment).
  Pausing the video stops this behaviour.
  This happens on a fresh profile without any extensions/addons.

  example youtube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JHEHPRDVEp4

  xev 2>&1|while /bin/true ; do read ans; echo $ans;date -Ins ;done >

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1330634] Re: gvfsd-smb breaks (hangs?) on resume

2015-11-19 Thread Martin Weis
Regularly happens to me, even without resume.
I often switch Networks (VPN), which might be a reason for time outs (share not
available in another network), but generally after a while the connection seems
to time out.
A killall gvfsd-smb and killall gvfsd-smb-browse brings back the possibility to
connect.

Message is in german here:
Die Wartezeit für die Verbindung ist abgelaufen (connection timed out)

Expected behavior:

* try to re-establish connection, if necessary

  When the system returns from suspend to RAM, gvfsd-smb stops working

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1409032] Re: gvfsd-smb: very high CPU utilisation

2015-02-06 Thread Martin Weis
This affects me without using a virtual machine.
There are other bugs about excessive CPU usage,. which might be related:
#369194
#1404765

Similar other bugs were filed against other protocol types (dav, http, ssh,
sftp, fuse), so these issues might be related, e.g.
#1401351
#1174663
#1404765
#1059332
#880637

How to debug this?

  I use Virtualbox and mount a .vdi on an SMB server. Using gvfsd-smb
  (browsing within Gnome to find the share), gvfsd-smb uses up to 50%

  share. Mounting using sudo ($ sudo mount -t smbfs -o
  guest,nounix,noperm //server/share /media/share) so that cifs is used

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1278429] Re: evolution-alarm-notify hangs on snooze

2014-07-31 Thread Martin Weis
The issue is unfortunately hard to reproduce these days, since it
happens less often than at the time of first bug report. Still appears
sometimes on different installations/machines.

Upstream bug report now in gnome bugzilla:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=734085

[unrelated]
Unfortunetely the wiki seems to be quite dead and unmaintained, the
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs page has dead links for most of the main entries (
e.g. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs to empty
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/ReportingBugs
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/HowToFix).

  evolution-alarm-notify hangs on snooze

Status in “evolution” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  The alarm notification window becomes unresponsive on clicking
  snooze.

  This usually happens, after I get updates in an ics file that is monitored by
evolution and the due alarms are popping up.
  The window is modal (in foreground) and does not respond, the only way to get
rid of it is a kill command:
  $  killall evolution-alarm-notify

  I started with debugging option on:
  $ killall evolution-addressbook-factory
  $ killall evolution-source-registry
  $ killall evolution-calendar-factory
  $ LANG=C ALARMS_DEBUG=1 evolution 21 | tee /tmp/evolution.debug.log

  and got a crash on a notification, so apport should have sent another
  crash report at around Mo 10.

  To me it looks like the function tray_list_remove_data_async is
  causing these issues.

  BTW, why is acroread starting?!? (- non-issue here)
  Thanks for looking into this.

the binary is part of libevolution package, so changed package
accordingly:

$ dpkg -S evolution-alarm-notify
libevolution: /usr/lib/evolution/3.8/evolution-alarm-notify

$ aptitude why libevolution
i   gnome Depends evolution-plugins (= 3.8)

Title:
  evolution-alarm-notify hangs on snooze

Status in “evolution” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  The alarm notification window becomes unresponsive on clicking
  snooze.

  This usually happens, after I get updates in an ics file that is monitored by
evolution and the due alarms are popping up.
  The window is modal (in foreground) and does not respond, the only way to get
rid of it is a kill command:
  $  killall evolution-alarm-notify

  I started with debugging option on:
  $ killall evolution-addressbook-factory
  $ killall evolution-source-registry
  $ killall evolution-calendar-factory
  $ LANG=C ALARMS_DEBUG=1 evolution 21 | tee /tmp/evolution.debug.log

  and got a crash on a notification, so apport should have sent another
  crash report at around Mo 10.

  To me it looks like the function tray_list_remove_data_async is
  causing these issues.

  BTW, why is acroread starting?!? (- non-issue here)
  Thanks for looking into this.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1131367] [NEW] chromium page search field selects the previous search string to clipboard

2013-02-21 Thread Martin Weis
Public bug reported:

The search field of chromium selects the string in the search field directly
into the clipboard, thereby overwriting existing content in the clipboard.
This is annoying, since if you want to search something from the clipboard on a
page, you cannot paste it into the search field.

Steps to reproduce:
1. open chromium, go to a website, e.g. http://www.ubuntu.com/
2. select text, e.g. Ubuntu
3. press ctrl-f to open the search field (if empty, you can paste with middle
mouse button)
4. select a different text, e.g. Tastefully
5. again press ctrl-f for  a search
6. search field content (Ubuntu) is selected AND in clipboard
7. you cannot paste Tastefully, since Ubuntu is in clipboard

Thanks for looking into it.

With gv you cannot save to pdf (it will be eps), so I took this bash shell
script with a gs command. You might want to crop the pdf to the bounding box
afterwards with pdfcrop
(http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/support/pdfcrop), which comes with latex (also
uses gs, so it could be integrated somehow, but did not check that in detail).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 689349]

2013-02-10 Thread Martin Weis
With following process to post-process the crappy 1-pixel stuff
generated by LO, I was able to get a relatively clean PDF (Fonts are not
exported as fonts, but that is another topic):

Save the file/export to EPS format.
The EPS is pretty readable, so I remove the lines with the dots with the
following awk script:

---8---fixodg2pdf.awk
#!/usr/bin/awk -f

# points (pc?) with the lr/ul corner being teh same
{if (($1==$4)  ($2==$5))
{next;}
}
{print}
---8-

(save and chmod a+x fixodg2pdf)
use it like

./fixodg2pdf.awk exported.eps  fixed.eps

Then use gv to open it and save as PDF.
There were issues with the bounding box for me with other tools, so the last
step may be up to your preferred tool.

Please, can somebody fix the exports of LO? This makes the whole drawing
part of LO pretty unusable.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1081297] [NEW] metacity crashes and xinerama reconfigures screens

2012-11-20 Thread Martin Weis
Public bug reported:

I have regular flickering screens (xinerama re-initialises them) in a
dual-screen setup under gnome-2d, as can be seen in .xsession-errors and
Xorg.0.log.
Sometimes metacity crashes then, as it was the case recently, when I had

Last 1000 lines of the log before the crash are here:
http://paste.ubuntu.com/1373239/
Line 764 looks to me like the reconfiguration due to a 'flicker'.

Console output of metacity (started from there with METACITY_VERBOSE=1

and there is

I do not know, if the two problems are really related (metacity crash, xinerama
re-init), but it looked like (happened at the same time).
Any debugging hints to find the reason for the xinerama re-init are welcome.
Sometimes it is impossible to work due to high frequency of re-inits.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 689349]

2012-08-06 Thread Martin Weis
(In reply to comment #41)
 dotscase.eps dotscase.fig dotscase.odg dotscase.pdf

Stumbled upon this bug, too (LibreOffice 3.4.4 OOO340m1 (Build:402)) and looked
into the files/exports.

Simple diamond shape here, dots shows up in pdf viewed with okular (not
evince).

this is in the content.xml
draw:enhanced-geometry svg:viewBox=0 0 21600 21600 draw:glue-points=10800 0
0 10800 10800 21600 21600 10800 draw:text-areas=5400 5400 16200 16200
draw:type=diamond draw:enhanced-path=M 10800 0 L 21600 10800 10800 21600 0
10800 10800 0 Z N/

export to eps, okular does not show the points, although they are in the file
(last two lines):

tm setmatrix
-1105 -1072 t
1 1 s
1105 1072 m 22104 1072 l 22104 30771 l 1105 30771 l 1105 1072 l eoclip newpath

4154 4079 m  4154 4079 l  pc

fig file format is easier to read:

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 979723] [NEW] evolution calendar: tooltip is modal and prevents using dialogs

2012-04-12 Thread Martin Weis
Public bug reported:

In the calendar there is a problem with the tooltip showing appointments:
As long as the tooltip is shown it is not possible to use dialog windows, e.g
for adding a new appointment. See attached and annotated screenshot for
illustration.

To reproduce:
1) add an appointment
2) open dialog again to add another appointment
3) go with your mose over calendar entry so that tooltip is shown

2012-04-11 Thread Martin Weis
You know that you can move windows with Alt-left mouse button drag ?
This is a workaround, but often needed on such small screens...

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 962078] Re: thunderbird flickers colors randomly (all widgets)

2012-03-29 Thread Martin Weis
Thanks Chris, this was the reason. Setting that var to false stops this
behaviour (Edit-Preferences-Advanced-[Config Editor...] for the curious).
I never changed/touched this manually, though. The flag seems to be not
recognised in earlier versions, since by reverting to an older version it did
not flicker. My profile is rather old now, migrated several times.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 962078] Re: thunderbird flickers colors randomly (all widgets)

2012-03-22 Thread Martin Weis
A downgrade to
dpkg -i
/var/cache/apt/archives/thunderbird_10.0.2+build1-0ubuntu0.11.10.1_amd64.deb
solves this issue, so regression must be in between.

Title:
  thunderbird flickers colors randomly (all widgets)

Status in “thunderbird” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  Thunderbird window elements change colors randomly, leading to
  flickering rainbow effect.

  While resizing window, or any update of window elements the colors
  cycle, as you can see in the attached screenshot in menu (colors as
  cycled on mouse over entries). A progress bar for example is a
  colorful random palette in the end, the progress icon flickers.

  This occured directly after update to version 11.0+build1-0ubuntu0.11.10.1.
  Restarting X had no effect, Iam running on gnome3 here.

  Screenshot attached.

  Thank you for looking at it.
