This should be fixed now. Some of you may still have duplicate Amazon engines enabled after the upgrade (a US one and a locale-specific one). Our custom search engines reappearing between search engine cache rebuilds is not a new issue, but it's being made worse by a new bug (https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1489820) which is causing a cache rebuild to happen on every restart rather than after app upgrades (and is also responsible for making some en-US search engines appear for non en-US users). I've found some other issues with our search defaults as well. Google search suggestions (i.e. completion of search terms in the
address bar) will not work in this release.
Investigation shows that the problem lies in e.g.
/usr/lib/firefox/distribution/searchplugins/locale/en-GB/google.xml
Search suggestions are configured to use this URL:
https://www.google.com/complete/search?client=ubuntu={searchTerms}
However testing shows that this URL always fails with a 400 error, but if you
replace the "ubuntu" in the URL with "firefox" (as the vanilla Firefox release
has it) then it does work.
Compare the responses for these URLs:
https://www.google.com/complete/search?client=ubuntu=test
https://www.google.com/complete/search?client=firefox=test
So if I change "ubuntu" to "firefox" in google.xml, and then start
Firefox with a new profile, Google search suggestions start workng
again.

I should point out, the difference between Ubuntu and Mozilla builds is
that Mozilla provide locale-specific builds of Firefox and
"general.useragent.locale" is defined as part of the build. Ubuntu
provides a single Firefox build and "general.useragent.locale" is
provided by language packs, which in this case appear to have a
different code.

Wow, there's a lot of extensions there. Those should probably all be removed from the archive, given that we offer no support for those and there are better ways to install them. Plugins other than Flash are all blocked in Firefox now, and there is no override for these. Subscribing doko, as I'm not sure if there's a subtle glibc bug here
(with the ordering of libraries in the libc.so linker script).
I can only reproduce this on trusty's toolchain in any case, so not
particularly important. And only on x86 (the compiler doesn't appear to
emit calls to stack_chk_fail_local on x86-64).

I've worked around this in the past by exporting "LIBS=-lc", but
without really understanding what the issue is. So I've taken a proper
look at this issue now.
Firstly, "-lc" is passed to the linker without the previous
workaround. This can be observed by adding --verbose to the link
command:

Bug description:
Chromium has a new layer 1 sandbox which replaces the suid sandbox on
systems with CLONE_NEWUSER. However, it's currently incompatible with
application confinement.
To summarize, the sandbox mechanism does something like this:
1) Browser launches zygote process:
- clones with CLONE_NEWUSER | CLONE_NEWPID | CLONE_NEWNET and then exec()
2) Zygote initializes sandbox:
- unshare(CLONE_NEWUSER)
- clones a new process with CLONE_FS and then does waitpid(). The child
chroots to /proc/self/fdinfo
- Enables CAP_SYS_ADMIN (see below)
3) Zygote forks
- Parent becomes init
- Child continues as zygote
4) Zygote waits for requests from the browser to create render
processes
5) On each request:
- Zygote clones a new process with CLONE_NEWPID (this is why it needs
CAP_SYS_ADMIN)
- New process drops all privileges and becomes a renderer
This produces the following denial on the device:

Bug description:
Chromium has a new layer 1 sandbox which replaces the suid sandbox on
systems with CLONE_NEWUSER. However, it's currently incompatible with
application confinement.
To summarize, the sandbox mechanism does something like this:
1) Browser launches zygote process:
- clones with CLONE_NEWUSER | CLONE_NEWPID | CLONE_NEWNET and then exec()
2) Zygote initializes sandbox:
- unshare(CLONE_NEWUSER)
- clones a new process with CLONE_FS and then does waitpid(). The child
chroots to /proc/self/fdinfo
- Enables CAP_SYS_ADMIN (see below)
3) Zygote forks
- Parent becomes init
- Child continues as zygote
4) Zygote waits for requests from the browser to create render
processes
5) On each request:
- Zygote clones a new process with CLONE_NEWPID (this is why it needs
CAP_SYS_ADMIN)
- New process drops all privileges and becomes a renderer
This produces the following denial on the device:

I can work around this issue with a cd /etc/apparmor.d/disable ln -s ./../usr.bin.firefox apt-get install --reinstall --purge apparmor libapparmor-perl libapparmor1 After that, content is rendered again. I had this problem earlier (https://bugs.launchpad.net/firefox/+bug/1643200) and worked around it by installing a firefox extension "ubuntu modifications". But after updating from 51.0.0 to 51.0.1, I got the same problem again and enabling or disabling the extension did not help any more. Same for enabling/disabling all the hardware acceleration and/or e10s settings in about:config. Now that it seems to be an apparmor profile issue, I think that can be fixed in a nice manner. And it also should see some priority. Therefore, I think it makes sense to have a clean new ticket for this. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to work for Firefox. Not only does Firefox ship with its *own* version of NSS instead using the system's version, but it even seems to be configured very differently. Firefox appears to use the legacy Berkeley DB database for its softokn, in key3.db/cert8.db. However, the system's certutil won't work with that legacy format: $ certutil -d ~/.mozilla/firefox/default.default/ -L certutil: function failed: SEC_ERROR_LEGACY_DATABASE: The certificate/key database is in an old, unsupported format. I can force it to use the SQL database in key4.db/cert9.db by running with NSS_DEFAULT_DB_TYPE=sql, and then I *can* install trusted CAs with certutil. But actually, it's much simpler to just make a symlink from firefox's own special copy of the SSL trust roots in libnssckbi.so, to the system's p11-kit-trust.so — thus making Firefox honour the system trust configuration. Chromium has a new layer 1 sandbox which replaces the suid sandbox on
systems with CLONE_NEWUSER. However, it's currently incompatible with
application confinement.
To summarize, the sandbox mechanism does something like this:
1) Browser launches zygote process:
- clones with CLONE_NEWUSER | CLONE_NEWPID | CLONE_NEWNET and then exec()
2) Zygote initializes sandbox:
- unshare(CLONE_NEWUSER)
- clones a new process with CLONE_FS and then does waitpid(). The child
chroots to /proc/self/fdinfo
- Enables CAP_SYS_ADMIN (see below)
3) Zygote forks
- Parent becomes init
- Child continues as zygote
4) Zygote waits for requests from the browser to create render
processes
5) On each request:
- Zygote clones a new process with CLONE_NEWPID (this is why it needs
CAP_SYS_ADMIN)
- New process drops all privileges and becomes a renderer
This produces the following denial on the device:

overrides the default theme with ugly monochrome icons. Instead of
adding a theme and using it by default, there are three patches that

Ubuntu 16.04 comes with Thunderbird 38.x, which apparently is no
longer supported by Mozilla. In reply to a bug report, they said
"Can you please upgrade to TB 45. TB 38 has come to the end of its
life-cycle."
I don't know if that is authoritative, but if TB 38 is really EOL then
the current Ubuntu should probably ship with a newer version.

Dear maintainers,
As of version 46, Firefox shipping with Ubuntu 12.04 (precise) is
linked against GTK3 instead of GTK2.
When the Oxygen-GTK3 theme (installed from the Ubuntu 12.04 repos) is
active in ~/.config/gtk-3.0, Firefox crashes on startup. The crash
does not occur with the defaullt (GTK 3.4.2) GTK3 theme.
As a side note, I believe that this kind of software change (link
against GTK3 as opposed to GTK2) should not happen on an LTS release
anyway ...

Sorry, but not switching to gtk3 means no more Firefox updates, and that
wasn't an option.
The fix for oxygen-gtk3 needs to go through the security pocket. If the
patch in comment 10 is correct, I'll upload this to the security PPA

Bug description:
Chromium has a new layer 1 sandbox which replaces the suid sandbox on
systems with CLONE_NEWUSER. However, it's currently incompatible with
application confinement.
To summarize, the sandbox mechanism does something like this:
1) Browser launches zygote process:
- clones with CLONE_NEWUSER | CLONE_NEWPID | CLONE_NEWNET and then exec()
2) Zygote initializes sandbox:
- unshare(CLONE_NEWUSER)
- clones a new process with CLONE_FS and then does waitpid(). The child
chroots to /proc/self/fdinfo
- Enables CAP_SYS_ADMIN (see below)
3) Zygote forks
- Parent becomes init
- Child continues as zygote
4) Zygote waits for requests from the browser to create render
processes
5) On each request:
- Zygote clones a new process with CLONE_NEWPID (this is why it needs
CAP_SYS_ADMIN)
- New process drops all privileges and becomes a renderer
This produces the following denial on the device:

Bug description:
Chromium has a new layer 1 sandbox which replaces the suid sandbox on
systems with CLONE_NEWUSER. However, it's currently incompatible with
application confinement.
To summarize, the sandbox mechanism does something like this:
1) Browser launches zygote process:
- clones with CLONE_NEWUSER | CLONE_NEWPID | CLONE_NEWNET and then exec()
2) Zygote initializes sandbox:
- unshare(CLONE_NEWUSER)
- clones a new process with CLONE_FS and then does waitpid(). The child
chroots to /proc/self/fdinfo
- Enables CAP_SYS_ADMIN (see below)
3) Zygote forks
- Parent becomes init
- Child continues as zygote
4) Zygote waits for requests from the browser to create render
processes
5) On each request:
- Zygote clones a new process with CLONE_NEWPID (this is why it needs
CAP_SYS_ADMIN)
- New process drops all privileges and becomes a renderer
This produces the following denial on the device:

[1] Shipping signed extensions in Debian packages is no options, because then we could only ship unmodified, pre-build extensions. That contradicts the Debian Free Software Guidelines (DFSG) #3 and signed extensions are not the preferred source for modification. So, please allow unsigned extensions installed in the system directory. Debian already applied a patch for it (see Debian bug #800150). Everyone having write access to the system directory would probably also have access to the files of Firefox and could tinker with it. I'd honestly be fine if they got rid of the Ubuntu start page entirely; "about:home" is fine and a bit nicer-looking IMO, even if it is saturated with Mozilla-ey-ness. Short of that, please respect the user's default search choice, and show a search box/logo for that search provider. Bug description:
Chromium has a new layer 1 sandbox which replaces the suid sandbox on
systems with CLONE_NEWUSER. However, it's currently incompatible with
application confinement.
To summarize, the sandbox mechanism does something like this:
1) Browser launches zygote process:
- clones with CLONE_NEWUSER | CLONE_NEWPID | CLONE_NEWNET and then exec()
2) Zygote initializes sandbox:
- unshare(CLONE_NEWUSER)
- clones a new process with CLONE_FS and then does waitpid(). The child
chroots to /proc/self/fdinfo
- Enables CAP_SYS_ADMIN (see below)
3) Zygote forks
- Parent becomes init
- Child continues as zygote
4) Zygote waits for requests from the browser to create render
processes
5) On each request:
- Zygote clones a new process with CLONE_NEWPID (this is why it needs
CAP_SYS_ADMIN)
- New process drops all privileges and becomes a renderer
This produces the following denial on the device:

Also setting Google as a default, isn't bad, but it would be better if you could choose on the page, which search engine you want to use, and set the startpage accordingly. There should still be a search bar, with Google in the middle of the site, and also the Ubuntu links, but also options to change the search engine and startpage on the fly, to reduce setup time. If all of this is to much work, at least please get the scaling right, so it doesn’t look like a scam.
