I'm hitting this in Ubuntu 14.04. The whole OS (not just the image viewer) consistently crashes (freeze) when trying to open one particularly large (24K*20K resolution) jpg image. The file is 16MB in size. Let me know if any resources are needed to debug this. I'm able to reproduce the problem

I face the same problem in ubuntu 12.04. In the Image Viewer, whenever I click on an image, the system crashes and asks whether to run in low key graphics. I don't get to choose my response except clicking on either 'enter' or 'esc' to which the system responds by displaying a set of commands

I can confirm this. It is related to images of a certain size and/or resolution, though I didn't narrow down it to specific numbers yet. Like the original poster, I get logged out or I end up on a black screen with some debug output from the kernel (I guess). I assumed it's due to my ancient

The problem would appear to be size related. The original problem applies to a selection of photos all sized 4000 x 3000 px (filesize 5M - typical example attached). I used GIMP to scale the size. -- 3000 px wide (2.6M) caused no problem and the app behaved as expected, -- 3500px wide
