Thanks for the video, in your video things work... In my case they do not.
That's the main problem - status message of Empathy can be changed in Empathy,
but not in MeMenu. And the whole thing doesn't seem to work (i mean Empathy).
Today I got another crash, telepathy-mission-control-5 crashed

no, i didn't make a screenshot when i experienced the bug, but, after
some googling, i changed icq server to login.icq.com instead of
-slogin.icq.com which i had by default (strange, isn't it? i used to use
pidgin previously on oneiric so empathy was as is on my updated to
12.04 system), restarted
i don't know what exactly should i screenshot. I receive no messages
(they come to my android device but not to empathy, normally messages
shall come to both devices), but i see my contacts change their status
from away to online and back.
