Re: [RESULT][VOTE] Accept the Firefly design donation as Beam Mascot - Deadline Mon April 6

2020-04-23 Thread María Cruz
Hi everyone!
It is amazing to see how this process developed to collaboratively create
Apache Beam's mascot. Thank you to everyone who got involved!
I would like to write a blogpost for the Beam website, and I wanted to ask
you: would anyone like to offer their testimony about the process of
creating the Beam mascot, and what this means to you? Everyone's testimony
is welcome! If you witnessed the development of a mascot for another open
source project, even better =)

Please feel free to express interest on this thread, and I'll reach out to
you off-list.

Thanks,

María

Re: Please comment on draft comms strategy by Oct 16

2020-02-24 Thread María Cruz
Hi Matthias,
thank you for the detailed feedback on the comms strategy. I can definitely
help with the Youtube channel revamp and social media copy to promote that
content. I will connect off-list with you about this.

All: given that we are moving forward with this strategy, I created a pull
request <https://github.com/apache/beam/pull/10958> to add this work to
Beam's repository. Please let me know if the PR is missing information.

Thanks,

María

The definitions are in the email. There are 2 criteria for contributor, and
there are 3 criteria for contributor and amplifier. The one extra is about
engaging other contributors in becoming community organizers, for example,
by starting a new meetup group.

I'm not sure what you refer to with what Google does now (I am aware of
different current and past attempts, but not sure which one you are
referring to. If you gave an example, I could answer more specifically).
What it means is that we will work with engineering teams to distribute
latest updates on features, and create new content requested, for example,
for educational purposes.

I don't know what you mean by "the branding of it". We are intending to
formalize all kinds of support that are currently ongoing for meetups, some
of these things may already be happening for different events; the
intention of this process is to centralize request and offer transparency
about the type of support that is available.

Are you asking about Meetup.com fees? I don't fully understand this example.

Financial support for meetups is available now only for catering services
and swag.
This process IS NOT for conference sponsorship.

[REQUEST] Workshop at Data Day in Mexico City - March 26th

2020-02-14 Thread María Cruz
Hello everyone,

There is an opportunity to host an Apache Beam workshop at the next Data
Day in Mexico City *[1]*. The event will take place on Thursday, March
26th. This is a great opportunity to expand the reach of Apache Beam in a
growing market like Latin America!

If you are looking for more leadership opportunities, this is the perfect
opportunity for you. The workshop can be presented either in English or in
Spanish. If you are interested, Google will help you create the content for
the workshop, drawing on some available training resources, like Apache
Beam Katas *[2]* and previous workshops that have already been developed.

This workshop is an important contribution that will bring more diversity
to the project, making it more accessible and expanding its user and
potentially its contributor base as well. Google Open Source will cover the
cost of sponsorship. More information about Data Day below. Please contact
us if you have any questions or comments.

Google's support framework for community-led meetups

2020-02-12 Thread María Cruz
Hi everyone,

I have been working closely with Gris Cuevas to develop a framework to
increase transparency on how Google Open Source supports community-led
events. Below you will find a table that identifies different event goals,
community roles, and the type of support Google Open Source can offer in
each case.

If you would like to request support from Google for your meetup, please
follow the meetup support request process
.
Can someone help me put this information, along with the support framework
below, under the Community tab [1] of the Apache Beam website?

We look forward to continuing partnering with our community organizers to
help Beam grow even more! If you have any questions, please let me know.

Yes, this is because there are currently 2 live blogs: one on Beam website,
and one on Beam Summit website. On the first proposal
<https://github.com/macruzbar/beam/blob/master/Communication-strategy-DRAFT.md#proposal-1-blog-post-categories-frequency-and-distribution>,
my recommendation is to reduce this to only 1 blog, with different
categories. I hope this can be implemented! =) It will work better towards
bringing new users to Beam events.

Looking forward to your thoughts / comments!

Re: Please comment on draft comms strategy by Oct 16

2019-12-06 Thread María Cruz
Hi everyone,
sorry for the tardiness in responding to this, and thank you to everyone
who shared comments.
I have adjusted the initial graphic, and taken a step further to develop
the Apache Beam Communications Logic Model. This type of visualization is a
hypothesized description of the chain of causes and effects leading to an
outcome of interest [1]. The goal of making this graphic is to identify how
Apache Beam's channels and content work towards project goals.

The logic model graphic is attached and has also been uploaded [2] to the
repo I've been working on. I also added it to comms-strategy-DRAFT.md [3].
If you have any questions or comments about this graphic, please add them
here [4].

Step 3 in this process includes describing areas where we can be more
strategic about the content we produce for Apache Beam. I would like to
deliver this by December 17.

Looking forward to your comments and feedback!

Thanks,

María

Hi all,
sorry for multiple messages. I realized after sending the first email that
a new thread with a different subject was probably more efficient.

I created a communication strategy draft. To start, I did a map of Beam
channels and content, and I have some questions for you:
https://github.com/macruzbar/beam/blob/master/Communication-strategy-DRAFT.md

In order to create these files, I forked the repo. Once this looks good,
and if everyone agrees, we can merge the changes to apache/beam.

I didn't assign reviewers for this file because I don't know if there is
someone who usually looks at these kinds of documents. So everyone: please
feel free to pitch in! I will give this a week for comments.

Looking forward to your comments!

María

Introduction + Support in Comms for Beam!

2019-09-30 Thread María Cruz
Hi everyone,
my name is María Cruz, I am from Buenos Aires but I live in the Bay Area. I
recently became acquainted with Apache Beam project, and I got a chance to
meet some of the Beam community at Apache Con North America this past
September. I'm testing out a communications framework
<https://medium.com/@marianarra_/designing-a-communications-framework-for-community-engagement-e087312f9b83>
for Open Source communities. I'm emailing the list now because I'd like to
work on a communications strategy for Beam, to make the most of the content
you produce during Beam Summits.

A little bit more about me. I am a communications strategist with 11 years
of experience in the field, 8 of which are in the non-profit sector. I
started working in Open Source in 2013, when I joined Wikimedia, the social
movement behind Wikipedia. I now work to support Google Open Source
projects, and I also volunteer in the communications team of the Apache
Software Foundation, working closely with Sally (for those of you who know
her).

I will be sending the list a proposal in the coming days. Looking forward
to hearing from you!

Best,

María
