Re: Booth Volunteers Needed for Dataworks Summit Berlin
Small clarification, you only have to staff the booth one hour on one of two days, not 3 hours both days. Alan. Looking for someone to give an Apache talk at Dataworks Summit EU 2018
Hi Apache comdev friends, Hortonworks will be hosting the Dataworks Summit EU in Berlin April 16-19th (https://dataworkssummit.com/berlin-2018/ ). We would like to invite Apache to deliver a talk on the Apache way or a related topic as a part of this conference. The format will be a 30 minute talk with time for questions. Our audience will be interested in learning more about Apache, how it builds software and manages its projects, ways to contribute beyond writing code, and how to get involved in Apache projects. The speaker will receive free admission to the conference. Please let us know if there is someone from Apache interested in speaking. Thanks. Alan.
Re: Adding roster of community-focused talks
I'm happy to contribute my material to this and work it into a state where others can adapt it to their corporate experiences as well. And for things located in the SF Bay Area I'm happy to give the training. Do you need help with Apache BigData as well? I would not be very useful for main ApacheCon but I'd be happy to help with the big data side. Re: My keynote from Apache Big Data on Hortonworks internal Apache training
I added my slides to the page and committed them. When I get to the publish site step it tells me I don’t have permission. I checked and my changes did get committed into SVN, so I assume someone with permission just needs to republish the site. Re: My keynote from Apache Big Data on Hortonworks internal Apache training
I’d like to add this to the page https://community.apache.org/speakers/slides.html The comdev site mentions that any changes should be posted to the comdev list first, so here’s the discussion. Also, I’m not clear what the technical process for modifying the page is. Do I need to rebuild the site after making the change? Is there some way to test that my changes are valid? Yeah, when we present the material we talk through that, but you’re right it might be worth putting it on the slide. My keynote from Apache Big Data on Hortonworks internal Apache training
All, As those who were at Apache Big Data in Seville saw, I gave a keynote there where I discussed Hortonworks doing internal training on Apache. Rich suggested that I might want to bring this conversation to the comdev list, hence this email. I’m happy to share the contents of the training on the community website if people think that will be useful. You can see the slides from the keynote at [1] and the slides from our training at [2]. The training covers Apache and the Apache way, a little bit about licenses and the Apache license, why Hortonworks chooses to work with Apache, how our employees should handle their dual roles as Hortonworkers and Apache community members, a set of best practices and things to avoid, and a brief discussion of trademarks. Several others have said their companies need something similar. If you find them useful you’re free to use our slides as starting point, and I’m happy to share insights from our experience. Alan. Re: Distributing ASF Material
I would like to add some context to Ted’s complaint. If he is talking about the incident that I think he is, it happened years before Hortonworks was founded. (I wasn’t there, but I have heard the story from those who were.) He was at a Hadoop User Group promoting MapR’s proprietary file system as better than Hadoop’s HDFS, which was not appreciated. So to bring this out now as “Hortonworks does not respect Apache ways” is not reasonable. With my Apache hat on, regarding Sharan’s original question of handing out material at Grace Hopper, I agree that keeping a clear distinction between Hortonworks and Apache is appropriate. It seems to me that her original proposal of having Apache members and committers who happen to also be Hortonworkers hand out the material accomplishes that.
