Yes.  As a 501(c)(3), this information is public information.  You can
likely get it from our annual reports as well as from our tax returns
through Guidestar.

Re: FOSDEM 2019 Update

2019-02-20 Thread Maximilian Michels

Hi Sharan,

It was nice meeting you. Indeed, FOSDEM is huge and we are only a part
of the community.

You are right, the broad spectrum of the Apache projects makes them
suitable for all kinds of devrooms, which makes having a dedicated
devroom hard. Perhaps something like a workshop on "The Apache Way" or
similar would be nice to have in addition to the stand.

Thanks,
Max

we did an application for one last year and were turned down so we are not
guaranteed to get room or even a booth at the event actually. (We need to apply

We know that Apache projects cover a broad spectrum which is why they feature

effective way to get donations. I think it would be worthwhile to think
about a general strategy for asking for donations from individuals,
which I believe the ASF does not do at the moment.

Generally speaking, I think we were missing space at FOSDEM and that
made communication hard. The ASF is huge and there is so much potential
to introduce folks to the ASF or its projects. I think we could have a
dedicated room just for presenting ASF projects and getting people
involved. I may be thinking too big here, but I think we can expand our
presence at FOSDEM.

We were in fact discussing having something like the paypal reader at

Another idea we had was live signup for mailing lists, as we sometimes
have people who are very interested in a project or an idea, but then
drop because SO MANY THINGS AT FOSDEM TO REMEMBER, so if we could have
the chromebook have a "sign me up" kind of page, where people get subbed
to the dev list and get an introduction a few days later, that would be
awesome.

The dev list ... of a particular project? Or this dev list? Or ...
something else?

I imagine that most of the people that sign up would then pretty quickly
drop off again, but if we can capture even a handful of new interested
people, this would be a huge win.

Is there an appropriate foundation-wide list that we could put them on?
Like annou...@apache.org for example? Or this list? Presenting them a
list of 200 projects to choose from could be very intimidating, when we
have a minute or two to catch their attention.

Thanks Bertrand, I should have used my favorite search engine to look
that up. Does the ASF publish the amount of individual/corporate
donations it receives?

The page looks great. I think what would increase the likelihood of
donations is to have fund raising goals. Wikipedia does that really
well. Something like, "help us to raise 10,000 Euro for server
operations 2020". Just thinking out loud here.

Hi Everyone

Last weekend FOSDEM was held in Brussels so wanted to post a quick update.

FOSDEM weather is generally quite predictable (read that as bad!) and this time
as well as rain, it snowed! Yet even with the bad weather, thousands of people
made the effort to attend.

Daniel flew in with our swag collection, I brought the banner and stickers.
Normally we are on the first floor but this time we were located on the ground
flow at the end of the row around from the reception. We arrived early on
Saturday morning to setup the booth, and although things officially started at
10am, we had a crowd a few people deep, around the booth from 9.30am onwards
ready to talk to us (or maybe they had seen our wonderful swag which included
some very nice warm fleece hats :-)

As well as the stickers and swag we also had a chrome book available for
project demos and on Sunday we used it to run the video about Apache
statistics. This was really useful for looking up project details and showing
people where to get additional information.

Our new location also meant that we had a lot of foot traffic and thanks to our
booth volunteers, we managed to laugh, talk, joke and well as inform a lot more
people about Apache, and Apache projects. We had queries ranging from incubator
to how to foundation itself works.

For the last couple of years, people had always been asking for Cassandra
stickers so this time we had some – so this is when all the people wanting
other stickers appeared and this years top request was Kafka followed by
Commons and even Thrift! I told people that if we printed stickers for every
single Apache project – the booth table would collapse!

It was good to see a few projects represented at the booth – these included
Beam, Httpd, Tomcat, Fineract, OFBiz, Kibble and Jena (Sorry if I’ve missed
any!) and there were also a few Apache related talks on the schedule.

Being at FOSDEM is great for outreach as well as the visibility of the
Foundation and as a result we have been invited to participate at even more
events.

I’d really like to thank everyone that was involved in helping out to make the
event a success. Special mentions go out to the “swagman Daniel”, Rich, Claude,
Lars, Jean-Frederic, Gris and Myrle!

One thing we did start was the idea of getting people to ‘buy the ASF a coffee’
or ‘buy the ASF a beer’ to get people to think about donating 2 – 5 euro
especially if any of the ASF projects had helped them in someway. This
potentially could be something to look into for next time.

By the way – I was hoarse from talking by the time I got back home! Looking
forward to doing it all again next year if we get the chance.

I'm happy to hear about any other FOSDEM experiences, feedback, thoughts,
comments.

Thanks
Sharan

I'll definitely bring the chromebook, but, as Max says, it's a bit
squinty. On the other hand, with the crowds at FOSDEM, there's really no
seeing anything from a distance anyways. :)

Re: FOSDEM 2019 Stand

2018-11-29 Thread Maximilian Michels

Hi Daniel,

Thanks for organizing! I'm thinking about taking a slot for Apache Beam.
I'll check back with the project.

Cheers,
Max

Hi folks,
We've been granted a stand at FOSDEM 2019 (2+3 February 2019 in Brussels
at ULB), and as such we have now started setting up a page to track
people, projects, swag etc.

We don't quite know where the stand is yet, but we are expecting it to
be 2nd floor of the K building as usual. It will be a single table
stand, which we will be splitting between the foundation as a whole, and
one other slot for projects to rotate.

Projects that are attending FOSDEM19 should put their project and
representatives on the FOSDEM wiki page at
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/COMDEV/FOSDEM+2019 which
will also be updated as we get more information.

We *expect* to be able to allot 2-3 hours per project, subject to how
many projects sign up for a session (we have roughly 16 hours available
in total).

If you are interested in just general booth management for the ASF, you
are of course very welcome to do that, just put your name on the signup
sheet :)

With regards,
Daniel.

I won't be able to attend this year but was there last year (for the
first time, believe it or not) and found it a great place to meet
people from all over the Open Source space and expand one's horizon
accordingly.

Thanks Daniel and team for organizing our presence there, and I
definitely recommend attending for those of us who can. Be prepared
for some crowds though ;-)

Hi all,
for anyone interested in having a BoF at FOSDEM, I got a reply from
Gerry Demaret (at i...@fosdem.org):

"You can not request a slot in a BoF room at this point. We will announce
more information on BoF sessions closer to the event."

2018-10-18 Thread Zoran Regvart
Hi Isabel,
thank you for responding. By "BoF" I mean birds of a feather[1]
session. I believe there were in the past, and I presume there still
are planned for FOSDEM 2019. These are informal sessions for people
with common interest to get together and meet to discuss or work
together.

I (now) see that there is a conference planning software[2] using
which I can just submit an event, I'm unsure if this is the way to
ask/reserve for the venue and I can't find any explanation on how one
does this.

What exactly do you mean when referring to BOF sessions at FOSDEM?

To my knowledge FOSDEM does have

- talks in main tracks, CfP still open, reviews done by the main org team
- dev rooms, those are one or two day community organised tracks on
specific topics, call for dev room topics IIRC has closed, dev rooms
have been announced and are open for talk submissions.
- people meeting independently for dinner during the conference at
restaurants nearby, often focussed on specific topics
- some events co-located but organised independently at the same weekend
(or week before/after) at locations nearby like meetups and the like.

Hope the above helps you a bit,
Isabel

It might be worth explicitly copying the Open Office PMC on this note,
since they have gotten grumpy in the past when they didn't know what our
plans are.

Hi folks,
I know it's a bit early still, but I've submitted our annual request for
a stand at FOSDEM 2019, and will liaise along with Sharan on this when
the time comes. We'll be notified on November 11th about the request
status, though we'll likely start planning before then, on the
assumption that we can get a stand.
