This was a nice feature but we need instructions.

They were sent by Rob to this list a few months ago, see

https://www.mail-archive.com/dev@openoffice.apache.org/msg22689.html

and they appear to work on the (Linux-based) system I'm using now, even
though retrieving data takes a lot of time since the scripts send many
queries to the SourceForge API.

I'll commit them as README.txt in
https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/openoffice/devtools/aoo-stats/ as soon
as I can.

Note: as discussed several times on this list, replacing this with a
link to the SourceForge statistics is wrong, since the scripts do the
right thing in terms of accounting for all downloads and reducing
duplicates (SourceForge statistics are precise, but we don't want to
consider, for example, a language pack as if it was a full download).

  Andrea.

While it's great to have more accurate stats, if creating them requires
regular manual intervention there is a great risk of them getting out of
date as they are now; rule one of metrics is to ensure they are integrated
with the workflow and not a stand-alone task. Perhaps changing the page to
document the issues with the SourceForge stats before linking to them would
be a good replacement? Accurate stats that need interpretation are better
than inaccurate stats...

Go ahead. I have been testing 4.1.1 on Win 10 Preview (32 & 64) for a
few months and found no issues that are not already present when run on
Win 7, 8.0, 8.1. If anything it runs better on Win 10, but that's my
subjective view.

Although I can also confirm that AOO 4.1.1 appears to run fine on Windows 10, I
would not put that in the system requirements until Windows 10 "ships" on July
29, even though the current Preview Build 10130 is likely very close.

There are two important confirmations:
 1. Preservation of an already-installed Apache OpenOffice when an older
Windows version configuration is upgraded.
 2. Download and installation of a fresh copy of Apache OpenOffice on a
(upgraded) Windows 10 configuration.

The interesting question for Apache OpenOffice 4.1.2 is to see if *signed*
binaries will now install properly (and might be distributed via the Windows
Store). We should have time to confirm that when 4.1.2 is distributed post
Windows 10.

I want to be very clear about the narrowness of the exemplary Apache OpenOffice

 is exemplary. A general
exploration of reveals more
cases as well as how rare exceptions are.

PRACTICES AND EXCEPTIONS

There are many practices that support how the ASF pursues its mission. The use
of mailing lists is one example. The use of services supported on Apache
infrastructure is another.

There can be exceptions to policy and deviations among practices. Exceptions
tend to be very specific and not generalized. (I suspect a generalization
would be a change/amendment of policy and a serious review of any conflicts
with established principles.)

An example of an exception that is specific to the Apache OpenOffice project is
the distribution of convenience binaries that have writing-aid plug-ins bundled
with them that are not themselves under a license that is acceptable for
source-code releases. There are a number of specific, delimited provisions
under which this action is found consistent with Apache principles although it
is an exception to a general policy. This practice was only introduced after
obtaining review and eventual concurrence via the list on which legal and
license questions are discussed.

The narrowness of the exception for these plug-ins is that they
contain no code, they deliver data in a general format that can
be used in a well-defined technique, and that they are completely
replaceable. Users can also install additional ones of their
choosing and remove/disable the ones that are provided in the
binary distributions as a convenience. It is also the case that,
if one inspects the plug-in (using a form of Zip package), one
would encounter all applicable license information and there would
be no confusion over the license that is specific to them material
conveyed by a given plug-in.

I am no html or javascript expert, but it looks like you have
duplicated the code when I view source on the staged site. The
first div section after the script reference looks like what is on
the main ASF donate page and works. I am not sure what the
following div's are trying to do. The entire code on the main ASF
donate page is just

https://static-na.payments-amazon.com/OffAmazonPayments/us/js/Widgets.jshttps://static-na.payments-amazon.com/OffAmazonPayments/us/js/Widgets.js>">
https://www.apache.org";
 data-ap-currency-code="USD"
 data-ap-note="Thank you for your donation!"
 data-ap-shipping-address-required="false"
 data-ap-payment-action="AuthorizeAndCapture"
>

Then it is more strange because the duplicated code is not findable in
the real source. But ...

You should be able to drop that in and it should work. There is no need for
more code to generate the widget.

.. when deleting everything but keeping what you have listed above, then
it's only one grey area. A bit too big but working. And this is important.

Thanks for you help. :-)

I would be very careful about interpreting the above extract. The plugins
do contains quite a lot of code, and some of them like the dictionaries are
not really
optional. We actually deliver plugins as part of our own exe, so we do
distribute some of the plugins without a special license.

But legal has looked at what we deliver and accepted it, so no need to
detail that further.

You also use the word "narrowness", as if these exceptions are written in
stone, that is not the case, we can always ask for other exceptions if
needed (whether
we get them is a different matter).
