[X] +1 Release this package as Apache OpenOffice 4.1.1

I clean install RC3 on Windows 7, test with my documents, recheck some
showstopper bugs, no new problems found.

 Thanks for the hint, Andrea-

After erasing all files, I used wget to download the 4 files --
including the Apache OpenOffice actual program (whereas before I had
downloaded it with my browser [Epiphany]) and everything checks fine
 now.

Some browsers are too smart and will decompress .gz files on the fly. If

 gunzip

*Test execution:*
We have assigned 176 text executions to about 20 volunteers, and completed
about 75.6% in execution (133 test executions done). Although we do not
meet the 100% completion goal before planned date, Aug 8, the execution
coverage and test result so far are good among platforms.

Towards AOO 4.1.1 Release - Please verify resolved language bugs(show stopper)

2014-07-31 Thread Yuzhen Fan
Dear all,

Lots of language bugs are prioritized as 4.1.1 show stoppers and they have
already been resolved. Please locate your interested bugs in below list[1]
and do verification as soon as possible, your help means much to make
release out!

Quick steps on how to do:
1. Work on the Language bugs: Product is Native-LANG
2. Change the Status: from RESOLVED to VERIFIED and add the comment.

To Greg and Kay,

Please retest failed/blocked test case if new build is available, current
build is 4.1.1 -- AOO411m2(Build:9771) - Rev. 1608452 as Kay installed.
The frequency of snapshot build for testing is once a week(*Jürgen*, please
correct me if I am wrong)

To Greg and Alexandro, do you have Mac or Windows 8, so that I can balance
some assigned but untested test cases on these platforms to you? Thanks!

Then it would be run and the steps described on the TC would be

 Some question arise here:
Where do I get this script?
How do I run it? (version of java, etc.)
Do I run it from CLI or from internal AOO application.

If there is a guide about creating and executing these testcase

However I have some questions about them, such as Firstly compile the

re-compile AOO or just the script?

Do I need to put JUnit and Ant on my system?

[QA][Test Report] Weekly Status Update as of 20140630

2014-06-30 Thread Yuzhen Fan
Hi All,
We start doing the AOO 4.1.1 Full Path Regression Test(FPR) on June 25,
here is the weekly update (6/25 - 6/30):

*Test execution:*
1. Complete *11%* of all test executions(Windows, Ubuntu) on M1 build, it
is behind schedule compared to the planned *14%* need to be completed

It covers major test of following:
(1) Basic, advanced operations in Writer, Spreadsheet, Impress
(2) Impacted areas testing by changes made (bug fixes)
(3) Windows 2012 Server OS support

*Defect summary:*
1. New severe bugs opened during FPR:
125161 - OpenOffice Writer crashed on open File

2. 4.1.1 resolved showstopper bugs to be verified (Total 35)
https://issues.apache.org/ooo/buglist.cgi?cmdtype=doremlist_id=153261namedcmd=4.1.1_release_blocker%2B%3Fremaction=runsharer_id=249089

*Issues quality highlight:*
1. One crash is found during this test cycle, need to confirm
2. Testlink system is so slow as to impact test execution's efficiency
3. *We need more test volunteers, especially on Mac*

*Volunteer status: *
1. We have total 7 test execution volunteers joined in FPR execution work
since June 24, 6 of them have got / will get test cases assigned, 1 of them
need to provide Testlink ID
2. We have 2 defect verification volunteers joined in 4.1.1 resolved
showstopper bug verification work since June 23, but wait for either his
Bugzilla ID or his bug selection

*Plan for next week:*
1. Continue to do FPR test with M1 or M2 if have
2. Remind some test execution volunteers to complete their assignments
3. Continue to organize the FPR test

Thank you all for effort provided last week, we have made a good start, but
we still need your continuous help on all platforms, especially on Mac!

Re: can't install 4.0.1

2014-06-18 Thread Yuzhen Fan
Hi Nathan,

How are you going on with your installation for AOO 4.0.1, is the problem
resolved? I notice that you are likely doing upgrade install from 3.x to
4.x, here is the related information about upgrade for Windows, in case you
need it.

*Upgrading OpenOffice for Windows*

If the current version is 3.x, you can remove it before you upgrade to
version 4.x, or keep it and install 4.x as an additional version.

1. In the Installation Wizard, do one of the following:

- To remove 3.x and install 4.x, select Remove all older product versions.
The startup group item, desktop icon, and entry in the Add/Remove Programs
list will all refer to 4.x.
- To have both 3.x and 4.x on your computer, deselect Remove all older
product versions. Each version will have its own startup group item,
desktop icon, and entry in the Add/Remove Programs list.

2. If the current version is 4.x, but is older than the point version that
you want to install (for example, you have 4.0.0 but want to install
4.0.1), the older version will be removed and the later one will be
installed. The startup group item, desktop icon, and entry in the
Add/Remove Programs list will all refer to the later version.

Re: AOO 4.1.1 - any chance to solve issue 124107?

2014-06-17 Thread Yuzhen Fan
This issue occurs since version 3.4.0 under some special conditions, it is
not as serious as recent regression which occurs since 4.0.0 under common

If we have no fix in hand or the fix we have is with risk, I will not
nominate it as candidate of 4.1.1 showstopper.

using table - regression, since 4.1.0

 Hi,

a possible schedule for AOO 4.1.1 is not yet finally discussed and
defined but I would like to propose some further issues that are
 related
to make the code working on MacOS 10.9.3.

First I propose that we develop the AOO 4.1.1 on the existing branch
AOO410 because it should be a minor bugfix release with some
 translation
 updates. But no bigger features.

Don't we have created a branch for every new release even when it was a
micro release like 4.1.1? To keep a clean repository for those who want
to build a specific release from scratch?

Or will you do some magic with SVN tags to reach this?

no magic, but the difference between a branch and a tag is minimal. I
would create a new branch based on branch AOO410. The release version is
tagged and we tag the 4.1.1 as well.

And we still have no Mac build bot but I have updated my Mac where I
have built the release in the past. Means I have no 10.7 system in
 place
and have to build on MacOs 10.9.3. We made these changes already on
trunk and I propose the following issues for integration in AOO 4.1.1
 to
make the build possible on MacOS 10.9.3. It will still work on 10.7.
Well I have already prepared a build and did a first basic test but it
will need some more testing of course.

 The issues are:

124896 remove obsoleted module-internal custom allocator in SAL,
  https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=124896

Should be decided by code developers.

124908 remove custom allocator support in stlport-replacement headers,
  https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=124908

Should be decided by code developers.

124422 Build no more possible with Xcode 5.1
  https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=124422

 OK, looks reasonable.

124442 Mac and Java Oracle 1.7,
  https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=124442

The last issue should be already fixed in AOO 4.1.0. Thats what I
understood from the issue text and target milestone. ;-)

I will check it, maybe I picked the wrong one.

I had to make a further changes on trunk for building on Mavericks and
clean this up but without an issue :-( I will reuse this issue for
 integrate the change.

 Juergen

But the message is that I plan to integrate some necessary changes to
 make the build possible ;-)

that's always one of the best reasons. When it is not buildable, the
complete software is simply not ready to release. ;-)

Test case -- using GNU/LInux Debian with Apache OpenOffice 4.1.0 RC3:

Follow instructions to create PKCS12 file (works on GNU/Linux, as well):

 http://stackoverflow.com/questions/20445365/create-pkcs12-file-with-self-signed-certificate-via-openssl-in-windows-for-my-a

Import the self signed-certificate into Iceweasel (Firefox): Edit --
 Preferences -- Certificates -- View Certificates -- Import --
 (select file location)

Close ApacheOO 4.1.0 RC3, if open.

 As explained at ( https://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Certificate_Detection),

 at the Bash prompt type:

 export MOZILLA_CERTIFICATE_FOLDER=~/.mozilla/firefox/here put your
 user profile

Subsequently -- from the same environment -- type command apacheoo

 --Assumed Setup
 -

 ApacheOO unpacks itself on /opt/openoffice4/

Accordingly (as root) it is necessary to create a symlink to start the
 application from the command line:

 ln -s /opt/openoffice4/program/soffice /usr/bin/apacheoo

 cd /opt/openoffice4/program/

 ln -s soffice.bin apacheoo.bin

This way any user in a GNU/Linux environment can start its
/usr/bin/apacheoo instance from the Bash command.

Subject: [RELEASE]: propose RC3 on revision 1586584
  To: dev dev@openoffice.apache.org

  Hi,

I would like to propose a new RC3 based on revision 1586584 of our
  AOO410 release branch.

  Integrated fixes for
  https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=124617
  https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=124639

The fix for https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=124636 is not
integrated because it is not really critical and the fix is not yet well
  enough tested.

It is potentially not understandable for people why we don't integrate
all available fixes but our experience have shown that even minor and on
the first look uncritical fixes can cause regressions. As acting release
manager it is my goal to stabilize the release branch and bring the
planned release out. I am sometimes to optimistic and over motivated and
try to push a release. But this time it becomes again clear that our
code base is tricky and complex and we need probably more time to
stabilize and test it. We published a Beta with 20 downloads and
received no critical feedback which was promising. But with the first RC
we got several critical issues and partly on code that is in the product
since last year. I am sure we can do better and the question after the
release will be how we can improve this. Quality is important for us and
I invite all to think about ways how we can improve this together.

  1. If the former version is 3.x, there will be a check box in

  - If select Remove all older product versions, then 3.x will be removed
and 4.x will be installed with 1 startup group, 1 desktop icon and 1

  - If de-select Remove all older product versions, then 4.x will be
installed with keeping 3.x, there will be 2 startup groups, 2 desktop
 icons
and 2 entries in the Add/Remove Programs list. These artifacts are one
suite for 3.x and the other suite for 4.x

  2. If the former version is also 4.x, but older than current installing

and comments provided in this bug, the expected behaviors for upgrade
 on
  Windows could be:

  1. If the former version is 3.x, there will be a check box in
 Installation
Wizard providing the option to keep or remove the former version
  - If select Remove all older product versions, then 3.x will be
 removed
and 4.x will be installed with 1 startup group, 1 desktop icon and 1
 entry
in the Add/Remove Programs list. This artifact is for 4.x

  2. If the former version is also 4.x, but older than current installing
one(e.g. install 4.1.0 over 4.0.0), then the older one will be removed
 and
the newer one will be installed with 1 startup group, 1 desktop icon
 and 1
entry in the Add/Remove Programs list. This artifact is for the newer
 one.

I think above behaviors are acceptable, I propose to update the
installation instructions [1] according those. Any comments, or any
  objections?

Fwd: [RELEASE]: propose RC3 on revision 1586584

2014-04-11 Thread Yuzhen Fan
Hi QAs and all volunteers,

You are invited to test this RC3 if you have time and would like contribute
to the AOO 4.1.0. Please do testing widely and intensively, from
installation, functions to integration with other applications in your
system.

Any critical problems you find, please report immediately. Thank you!

Subject: [RELEASE]: propose RC3 on revision 1586584
To: dev dev@openoffice.apache.org

Hi,

I would like to propose a new RC3 based on revision 1586584 of our
AOO410 release branch.

Integrated fixes for
https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=124617
https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=124639

The fix for https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=124636 is not
integrated because it is not really critical and the fix is not yet well
enough tested.

It is potentially not understandable for people why we don't integrate
all available fixes but our experience have shown that even minor and on
the first look uncritical fixes can cause regressions. As acting release
manager it is my goal to stabilize the release branch and bring the
planned release out. I am sometimes to optimistic and over motivated and
try to push a release. But this time it becomes again clear that our
code base is tricky and complex and we need probably more time to
stabilize and test it. We published a Beta with 20 downloads and
received no critical feedback which was promising. But with the first RC
we got several critical issues and partly on code that is in the product
since last year. I am sure we can do better and the question after the
release will be how we can improve this. Quality is important for us and
I invite all to think about ways how we can improve this together.

Juergen

Thanks Steve for your verification on installation of new package on en_US.

From testing perspective:
1. The repackage changes nothing on functions, so previous and ongoing
tests are still valid and there is no need for retesting.
2. But we need to retest the installation for below two typical scenarios
on all language packages
- Clean install 4.1.0 with no existing versions(e.g. 4.0.1)
- Upgrade install 4.1.0 over an existing 4.0.1

Overall everything seems to be working perfectly but there is a small

In addition the OpenOffice logo shows on the 4.0.1 group but not on the

I know these are small cosmetic problems but could be confusing for users.

[QA][Test Report] Weekly Status Update as of 20140404

2014-04-04 Thread Yuzhen Fan
Hi All,

We have completed the AOO 4.1 Full Path Regression Test(FPR), here is the
weekly update (4/01 - 4/04):

*Test execution:*
1. Complete the left test executions on new snapshot build
(AOO410m15(Build:9761) - Rev. 1583666) and spot check the previous tests
completed last week

*Defect summary:*
1. New bugs opened this week:
124584 - open the sample file in AOO, group shape containing ellipse shape
and table not imported correct (already confirmed, not showstopper)

2. About 60 bugs(include crashes) have been verified by Juergen, Oliver,
Edwin, Steve, Clarence, Shao Zhi, Liu Ping, Yu Zhen, etc

*Issues quality highlight:*
1. AOO 4.1.0 RC1 (AOO410m15(Build:9761) - Rev. 1583666) is proposed and
in voting
2. There is a upgrade install issue, reported by Pedro Lino on RC build,
need a bug in Bugzilla for tracking
the Startup Group for 4.0.1 is not removed so you end up with two startup
groups with different names pointing at the same folder. In addition the
OpenOffice logo shows on the 4.0.1 group but not on the 4.1.0.
3. We need volunteers to retest the installation for below two typical
scenarios on all language packages
- Clean install 4.1.0 with no existing versions(e.g. 4.0.1)
- Upgrade install 4.1.0 over an existing 4.0.1

*Volunteer status: *
1. We have total 10 test execution volunteers joined to FPR execution work
since Mar 24
2. We have 8 defect verification volunteers on 4.1 resolved crash bugs
since Mar 31
3. We have 3 - 5 defect checking volunteers on 4.1 regression bugs since
Mar 19 - led by Rainer Bielefeld

*Plan for next week:*
1. Vote for AOO 4.1.0 before Sunday evening, 6 April: 2014-04-06 11:00pm UTC
2. Stand-to for RC testing if We have RC2 (hopefully not :-))

Thank you all for effort provided last week, we are towards to the release
of AOO 4.1.0, let's continue and make progress this week!

Re: 4.1. Regressions

2014-03-19 Thread Yuzhen Fan
Here is the analysis of possible cases for bugs in query [1], together with
the proposed instructions to review them, any comments and suggestions,
please let me know.

1. New issue happens on new feature in 4.1, or migration issue only applies
to 4.1(e.g. *Issue
124437*https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=124437- Opening
password protected files not possible) - Leave the Version field to 4.1
2. New found issue being observed in 4.1 - Determine and refine the Version
field to version in which the issue occurs first
3. Regression issue works in 4.0.1 but breaks in 4.1 - Leave the Version
field to 4.1 and set the Keywords field to regression, then specify the
comparison build and regression build clearly in Additional *C*omments field

Here, let's call for volunteers to assist:

1. Any one who can help on this, please send me your Bugzilla ID, I will
send you bug list for your review
2. Any one who has already started reviewing, could you please share and
book your bug IDs to avoid duplicated effort among us.

There only is no common sense whether key word should be used also for
very old regressions (regression in OOo 1.0.1 compared to OOo 1.0.0),
from developer's point of view only regressions in AOO 3.4-dev and later
  are of interest.
  https://www.mail-archive.com/qa@openoffice.apache.org/msg01787.html

Generally problems with newly integrated features can not be
regressions. But if the code of a newly integrated feature damages an
older function so that it does not work correctly since integration,
that damage deserves key word regression.

But I do not think that many regression key words will have to be added.
The problem with the Bugs in the list is that at least one of following
mistakes is in data for the Bugs:
  * Version has been changed to 4.1 in error, example:
(Bug 105492 - Text Orientation Degrees Entry Field
  * It has not been tested with what Version the
bug has appeared, example:
(Bug 124259 - mathvariant=normal is ignored on import of .mml file)

So far my personal thoughts, what are result of long co-working in open
  source projects,

communication is the key here. We have experienced QA volunteers who
know how to set the fields and we have volunteers with less experience.
I suggest that we clean up the various fields and update the how submit
a bug page with a clear and updated explanation of what we think is best.

If somebody is not sure it is best to let the fields unset or open and
ask on the QA list for support/help.

Difficult - I currently prefer to check issues where I have knowledge

Nevertheless, we should find proceedings what can increase efficiency

Sounds good, but how about the defects already have value in QA Contact

[QA][Test Report] Weekly Status Update as of 20140310

2014-03-10 Thread Yuzhen Fan
Hi All,

We continue doing the AOO 4.1 Function Verification test(FVT), here is the
weekly update (2/25 - 3/10):

*Test execution:*
1. Existing feature on 3 APP testing - Ongoing
We have assigned 998(853 as of 2/14) test executions to about 42
volunteers, and completed about 56.0%(45.8% as of 3/10) in execution (654
test executions done, 535 as of 2/14). We have executed 120 test cases
since Feb 14 with 3 more test execution volunteers.

Total Not Run Passed Failed Blocked Completed [%]
Debian Linux 64bit 56 7 36 10 3 87.5
MacOS X 209 81 95 20 7 61.24
Redhat Linux 32bit 69 66 1 2 0 4.35
Redhat Linux 64bit 277 121 110 42 4 56.32
Ubuntu Linux 64bit 167 37 95 30 5 77.84
Windows 7 209 102 82 22 3 51.2
Windows 8 182 101 62 19 0 44.51
Total 1169 515 481 145 22 56.0

*Defect summary:*
1. Complete verifcation for 44 resolved bugs which were identified to
verify before beta candidate release, several reopened bugs are resolved
and need verification again

*Issues quality highlight:*
1. Apache OpenOffice 4.1 Beta(based on release branch AOO410, revision
1573601) is released after successfully votes
2. We do not complete FVT on schedule. From above execution statistic, the
coverage on Linux, Mac and Windows is with balance, the low execution rate
on Linux 32bit is not critical as low priority on platform Linux 32bit
3. We still need to run left test executions in FVT, especially on Windows
8 and Ubuntu 64

*Volunteer status:*
1. No new test execution volunteers(total 42 so far) joined on FVT
execution work since Feb 14
2. Need defect volunteers to check regression bugs in Bugzilla

*Plan for next week:*
1. Call for defect volunteers to check 4.1 regression bugs in Bugzilla
2. Continue to do FVT test on Mac, Linux and Windows
3. Remind some test execution volunteers to complete their assignments or
do reassignment

Thanks you all for effort this week, although we do not complete FVT on
schedule, we really have some test execution volunteers participating
actively and make progress day and day. Let's continue and work together to
make preparation for beta release candidate!

1. We do not complete FVT on schedule. From above execution statistic, the
coverage on Linux, Mac and Windows is with balance, the low execution rate
on Linux 32bit is not critical as low priority on platform Linux 32bit
2. To release beta candidate safely, we need to verify proposed resolved

regression, will call for volunteers in community
3. We still need to run left test executions in FVT

2. Need defect volunteers to verify high priority bugs in Bugzilla (see
above in Defect summary, any one can contribute on this, please let me know
and provide the platforms you can help with)

*Plan for next week:*
1. Verify identified high priority bugs
2. Continue to do FVT test on Mac, Linux and Windows

Thanks you all for effort this week, although we do not complete FVT on
schedule, we really have some test execution volunteers participating
actively and make progress day and day. Let's continue and work together to
make preparation for beta release candidate!

-- For testers, we will verify bugs existed and solved in product, as my

Ubuntu 64bit, Windows 7 and Windows 8 this week, but we have only one
volunteer on Mac 64bit OSX while the support to this platform is new added
in AOO 4.1.

As the dev snapshot build for Mac 64bit will be ready in this
weekend(around Jan 24), we're looking for people who can help test on Mac
64bit OSX over the next few weeks. If you have interest on it, please send
your Testlink ID (if you haven't a Testlink account, you can register
one[2]), and I will assign test cases to you. You should also get
installation sets from dev snapshot [3] and report issues in Bugzilla [4].

Thanks!

I update the AOO 4.1 Release Planning [1] to sync the schedule in
discussion here, it is mainly based on Juergen's proposal on Dec 17 with
QE's comments.

   Mar 21, 2014 RC1?
Apr 1, 2014 GA? (I like this date if possible)

In general I agree with the schedule, but what strikes me here is the 2
months between the translation deadline and the RC1. I know the
  integration
work takes time, but 2 months seem excessive. This would mean that a
translation completed in February must already wait for the (possible)
   language update release.

In this time period we also have a public beta release. That is the
where the additional time goes. If we want translations in the beta
(why wouldn't we?) then we end up with a schedule like this.

I think a beta is a good idea, could we please agree to name it something
like beta1 to differentiate it from RC1, which is something internal to me.

some time ago we have discussed a language only release on base of
4.0.1. And even a language release requires a lot of work. Until
 today
  I
see 3 potential languages ready which is not enough from my
  perspective.

We are now at 4 new languages at 100% (bg, da, nb, th). Even if your
proposed schedule (new version) is respected, this means that Danish,
  that
was completed back in October just after the 4.0.1 release, would stay
unreleased until April. Thanks to your and Herbert's work we will have
snapshots available for those languages from the buildbots in a couple
  days,
so most of the integration work has already been done. Wouldn't it make
sense to release 4.0.1 in the additional 4 languages in January, to
 avoid
   the 6-months gap?

This sounds like a good idea to me, a language refresh like we did with
  3.4.1.

If I remember right, we did not make a new version, just release the new
languages (incl. danish) for the same version.

Re: [RELEASE]: proposal for our next release AOO 4.1

2013-12-18 Thread Yuzhen Fan
Feb ??, 2014 feature FVT finish (I know in China is public holiday as
well from Jan 31 - Feb 7)

QA needs about 70 PD to complete the left 1061 executions (total 1061,
suppose 15 executions per day per QA volunteer being concentrated on this
work) on Writer(140), Calc(330) and Impress(591). We started the feature
FVT early on Oct 29, the original plan is to complete Writer on 11/29, Calc
on 12/27 and Impress on 1/24, we are very behind the planned schedule now
because of the less volunteers. It would be optimistic to finish feature
FVT before Feb 13.

Feb 21 - ? full regression testing and bug fixing

Based on the experience from 4.0 Full Regression(22 QA volunteers completed
1,221 regression test executions during 10 weeks), if we take the same
volume of executions and execution rate in 4.1, we may not complete it
before Mar 20(4 weeks). The complete date would depend on how many QA
volunteers will participate and how much effort they will provide, as well
as how many defects are found.

Test cases are ready for OOXML improvements - OSBA patches use case 4

2013-12-18 Thread Yuzhen Fan
Hi All,

I have completed writing test cases for OOXML improvements - OSBA patches
use case 4 in TestLink[1], they are listed in tree Apache OpenOffice
testproject - Fidelity - OSBA OOXML Improvements - Use Case 4, in Test
Specification when select Test Project as Apache OpenOffice testproject

The test cases (total number is 14) cover all places/objects which can have
comments and will check those comments made in Microsoft Word and saved in
OOXML format can be imported as a true presentation into AOO, and
subsequently exported back to OOXML

The precondition is the requirement of apache.org account to get test
documents.

product. Any one who can contribute to the testing, please provide your
TestLink ID and preferred platforms (Windows, Mac and Linux, we plan to
move Linux testing completely to 64 bit and do only basic testing on 32 bit

test cases in TestLink [1].

I confirmed that the 2 defects are also in 4.0. Then I agree that they are
 not 4.0.1 ship blocker.

 - Shenfeng (Simon)

On the one hand I agree that regressions introduced in the latest
 release
should be fixed in the next release.
On the other hand we are already quite far in our planned AOO 4.0.1
  release
schedule and AOO401rc3 contains a lot of important bug fixes and
improvements regarding our supported languages. Thus, I strongly vote
 for
releasing AOO401rc3 as AOO 4.0.1 under these circumstances.
From my point of view 123345 and 123346 should be release blocker for
 our
   next release.

It is important that we understand the different role of a minor x.y.1
  release.

When we have a major release, like 4.0.0, we're making tons of code
changes, adding new features, and potentially (and very likely
actually) introducing many regressions. So the QA effort for a major
  release has many aims:

  -- test new features
  -- verify new fixes
-- identify the regressions introduced in the code

We can never test 100% of a product. Maybe computer-based proofs of
correctness have been done in some chip designs, but generally
complete coverage is never possible. So we focus on the most-commonly
used features of the product, across a large matrix of platforms and
  applications.

The goal, if you think about it is: to increase the confidence that
we are *not* releasing a product that has a bug in it that will make
  it unusable for our users.

We can never guarantee this. We can only increase our confidence in
this. At whatever finite point we stop our testing it is always
possible that the next test would have found a killer defect. So the
challenge in designing a test plan is to identify what tests can be
performed in a reasonable finite test pass (or passes) that will
reduce the chances of a killer defect still being in the code. I
think Yuzhen did a great job at designing the test plans for the
  releases.

The quality approach in a minor maintenance release like 4.0.1 is
different. We don't make tons of code changes. In fact we are very
restrictive. We only fixed showstopper bugs that were proposed on the
mailing list, discussed and approved by the Release Manager. The goal
is have no new regressions introduced. The goal is to fix targeted
bugs, and get those fixes out to users quickly. If we didn't think
that speed of release was an important thing here then we would all be
working on 4.1.0, not 4.0.1. So the fact that we are working on 4.0.1
at all shows that there is some urgency to get bug fixes released.

In any case, if new bugs are found in 4.0.1 testing, I don't think it
matters whether they were found in RC1, RC2, RC3, during the vote or
the day after the vote. It doesn't matter who discovered the bug or
when they discovered it. The question is: How severe is the defect?
Is it a showstopper? Is it something we hold back 4.0.1 for? Or
something less severe that we put in 4.1.0?

   Regarding issue 123348:
As far as I know this issue is not new and already known. I think a
workaround exist. Thus, for me this is not a release blocker.

Yu Zhen, do you think you can change your mind regarding your vote?

I don't think we should ask anyone to change their votes. A release
is approved by majority vote. It does not need to be unanimous. We
should not be afraid to have a dissenting vote. But I do hope we can
develop a shared view of the true value of QA

Thanks for asking. I created the detailed list of changes and issues fixed
 by RC3:
 http://people.apache.org/~hdu/**izlist_aoo401_rc2_vs_rc3.htmhttp://people.apache.org/~hdu/izlist_aoo401_rc2_vs_rc3.htm

In short the relevant changes were fixes for the AOO's SDK on Windows,
which is only developer-testable and it doesn't impact end users. Another
important update in the respin was that the just finished Turkish
translation was integrated for RC3, even though it was way past the
 original l10n deadline.

So from an end-user perspective RC2 and RC3 are identical except that now
there is a Turkish localization. All testing results can be reused.

 I propose a further RC3 for AOO 4.0.1 based on branch AOO401 rev. 1524958.

I have fixed 2 further serious issues that are important for office
automation tasks. The fixes are locally and affect only a few places.
It's mainly my fault and I did some stupid mistakes when I fixed it
initially. Some tests worked but the tests were not complete.

Anyway we are now preparing the RC3 and it should become available over
the weekend. The upload is very slow.

We changed also the update Url for better tracking of this release and I
integrated a further language Turkish which was ready and 100% UI
complete. But we should keep in mind the translation deadline for AOO
 4.0.1 was Sep. 6th.

I will be on vacation but Herbert will replace me as acting release
manager and will take care that the bits are available finally on dist.

If 09/14(Saturday) is for RC1 and 09/16(Monday) is for optional RC2, we
will actually have 1 RC and do RC testing for 2 days, from 9/17 - 9/18. I
think it's OK for a bugfix release, but it really depends on the quality of
bug fixes and the stability of the RC build.

I have updated the release schedule in wiki [1]

Hi,

I have seen your test results on Win7 in the wiki page, it's very good. You
don't have to include everything from detail in depth, we need to ensure
the coverage as wide as possible in this exploration test.

scenario/steps; (3) test result/defect found, by updating these two web
 links: http://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/QA/AOO40_Database for Base, and

 2. About writing test cases for Base, I have completed to create
hierarchies of test suites in TestLink based on the finalized test matrix
 http://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/QA/Tescase. Please could volunteers
navigate the test suite tree view in the Test Specification (Test Project
is Apache OpenOffice testproject), and let's following below process to
 organize test case writing:

 1) Volunteers provide their TestLink ID and list of their preferred test
suites to Yu Zhen Fan (fanyuz...@gmail.com) (Currently I have Anil
Kumar's TestLink ID and confirmation to write test cases)
 2) Yu Zhen specifies the test suites' assignment to the individual
 volunteer
 3) Volunteers write test cases in the assigned test suites, in TestLink.
For test cases related to connectivity testing, please attach the live
test DB(s) and provide steps to set up test environment in Preconditions.
It's encouraged test cases' author to test his/her test cases in execution
 stage.

 3. I will work with Liu Ping Tan on test matrix for Drawing later this
week, if you have interest on Drawing test case writing, please let me
know, I will put you in the pipeline.
