Maybe Matthias has the time to delete the dash if it's really wrong.

+1 - this logo fits the current layout of the About box and can be properly
adapted for the Startup Screen.

Personally I prefer “open source” to “open-source”, but I don’t care to disrupt.

A three line version would be:
free and
open-source
for 20 years

You think this is a vote for PMC members? Or what else do you want to express
_at this point_ with "binding"?

I think we are here, in this specific case, in a vote where all votes have the
same weight.

Yes, I think that this remark is necessary, because it would be possible to
insist on "binding", but this was not announced and should not be done during
the vote.

Hi,

Please do not hijack a VOTE.

You can answer +1, abstain or -1 (giving your reason)

Proposals could (and should) have been made months ago.

Even "open source" vs. "open-source" has already been discussed in June.

And to answer Czesław: The font is of course "Source Sans Pro", not "Arial".

first of all: I don't know if my suggestion is better, in any case I did _not_
say so.

But I find your reasoning unlogical, because: why should it be a question of _a
sentence_?
Either it's a question of a general translation, in which case the logo should
only contain a "20" (and not "20 years"), or it's not a question of translation.

(Yes, I am of the opinion that "20" alone is _not_ to be misunderstood.)

Absolutely correct, only less advertising psychologically.

Not without reason I had pointed out the missing point (in: "Since 20 years")
and I hope that you believe me that I know that the grammar was formally wrong.

For me, if a sentence must be used, it should be translated for localized

In terms of better English grammar and punctuation, it should be

Open, for all, for 20 years.

or better yet

Open for all, for 20 years.

In my opinion, the proposal with the text to the right of the existing logo
looks similarly unfavorable as the original proposal (i mean:
https://home.apache.org/~mseidel/about_20yrs.png)

> BTW:
> What font is used for: "Open for all / since 20 years"?

Arial italic

I still don't feel my own proposal is optimal, although I had already varied a
lot.
It is important to find an optimum between content and design of the text and
the use of elements of the actual logo.

e.g. I first tried to write "Open" and "20 years" in blue and "for all since"
in dark grey, but that seemed to distort the content.

Maybe the spelling would be too:

"Open. For all. Since 20 years"
(at the end, without dot)

feasible, because in the de-OOo-Community we (i think it was Eric H.) once
invented a very public slogan :

"Open. For Business"
(at the end, without dot)

Sorry, but I don't like the picture optically, but unfortunately I am not a
graphics expert to improve it.

I would also like to point out that "open-source" might be "open source" (as in

I call for a vote on the usage of this image
https://home.apache.org/~mseidel/about_20yrs.png

on the About dialog of version 4.1.8 (to be released during the 20th
Anniversary celebration)

I propose that it is committed to branch 4.1.8 in location
main/default_images/introabout
to replace the current about.png

If we do a backup of the original graphic that we can restore for 419
that would work.

But I am not the one to decide.

And don't mix up Lazy Consensus with a vote. Two separate things.

But both must be easy to be recognized, no "stealth mode" ;-)

That would mean that anybody wanting to compile would have to change their

Isn't it easier for everybody just changing the logo on the source for this

What I forgot:

"Normally" only the Release Manager merges commits into a (to be
released) branch.

However, I did a lot of small commits over the past year. Don Lewis did
highly appreciated code commits recently.

@Jim: Would you be available as Release Manager once more?

You can fork the branch on GitHub and create a Pull Request.

Additional remark:
As I already pointed out (dev@ subject "OpenOffice 20 years event", 29
August)
I like the idea of combining the "O/0" character and the seagull logo.
Image provided by the French volunteer is a self-standing entity and
Pedro's proposal
seems to me sort of "embarras de richesses" (in French: "confusing
abundance").
I see the bigger seagull logo on the one side of "Apache/OpenOffice 4" and
its reduced copy on the other.
That doesn't look very appealing and IMHO strains one's eyes - no matter
what colour "20 years" would take.

"Open-source for 20 years" does the job properly.

Czesław Wolański

There is only one source for the logos:

While I like the graphic from the French list I don't see it in the

Have we ever got a reply or a vector based version?

There were always only a handful (literally) of people doing all the

Basically, all colors of the feather are suitable, my personal taste would be
the 'upper' colors from about #F69923 to #D43831.

Yes, this requires that the original author does that (or shares a vector

This raises another question: in some versions of the AOO logos there is a TM

I had recently suggested replacing the yellow (at 20 years) with a color that
would be more recognizable.

I mentioned orange as an alternative color, but I can't say if this would be
the best choice.
Maybe you should just use the red-brown of the Apache lettering?

Unfortunately it is not so easy to create an example directly because "20
years" contains antialiasing.

Hi Peter, all

I'm not a designer but can hack stuff using Gimp :)

I adapted the idea submitted by the french volunteer (we can not use the images
as they are because they must have the exact same pixel size to fit in the
dialogs)

In the Intro screen the white space below the word OpenOffice can not be used
because it is where the progress bar is displayed during loading.

Comments/suggestions?

This is not an argument. When technical issues are discussed, ONLY technical
arguments should count.

I am +1, if not Matthias is the one who does everything.

It should be a community thing. We got some pictures from the french List.

If i.e. Pedro can create a patch to add them in, I think it is great.

I am kind of negative if in the End Matthias has to do it all alone.

We have to get more people get involved in such stuff.

I hope I could make myself clear on the constraints I see ;)

Is it not what is done for a Test build or a Developer build?

I do it for my personal Test Builds and we did it for Dev Builds. But
there is no rule for it.

AOO 4.1.8 being a "normal" build (just happening around the 20th
anniversary) only needs a modified About graphic (IMO).

But I will step back, since I would be the one to do the work (as I
already did) and wait what others think of it.

So, which would be the proper folder and why don't you crate a Pull
Request? ;-)

I would say main/default_images/introabout?

Yes, but that would override our "original" graphic.

But only for branch 4.1.8 which will not be further developed?

Of course we can restore the old graphic in branch 419 when it is
branched off 418.

But I will not decide that, since it is easier for me to specify it in
configure.

I assume this does not affect the other branches. If it does, then it should be
somewhere else

A Pull Request cannot break stuff. It is easy to do on GitHub.

Pull? Shouldn't it be Push? I'm not sure if I won't break stuff and it's less
than a month for release...

Git calls it Pull requests: https://github.com/apache/openoffice/pulls

Branch 418 is almost 12 month old. And it will be released when it is
"ready"

Well, I didn't create a graphic for the Intro because I really think it
is not needed.

Yes, but that would override our "original" graphic.

I would rather refer to the graphic in ./configure.

But again, if others want it to be that way, we should discuss.

Hacking is what we do when we change things. It has been wrongly associated

I already had the image. My point was that it should be added to the proper

Hi Matthias, all

I assumed it was approved by lazy consensus that version 4.1.8 would use the
"open-source for 20 years" message both in the Intro and in the About dialogs?

Can these images be committed to the 4.1.8 branch for testing (not that it

I can't say anything regarding a 20th anniversary event but for AOO
4.1.8 we are trying to document as much as possible.

About 20th anniversary plans

Hi,

Is there any webpage about the volunteering and participating on the 20th
anniversary? I was off from the dev mailing list for a while and I would be
happy if there is any plans in written form, so that I could have a look. (or
about 4.1.8 too!)

Thanks.
