Wakefield, MA —24 September 2019— The Apache Software Foundation (ASF), the all-volunteer developers, stewards, and incubators of more than 350 Open Source projects and initiatives, announced today Apache® Rya™ as a Top-Level Project (TLP). Apache Rya (pronounced "ree-uh") is a Cloud-based Big Data triple store (subject-predicate-object) database used to process queries in milliseconds. The project was originally developed at the Laboratory for Telecommunication Sciences, and was submitted to the Apache Incubator in September 2015. "We are very excited to reach this important milestone showing the maturity of the project and of the community around it," said Dr. Adina Crainiceanu, Vice President of Apache Rya and Associate Professor of Computer Science at the U.S. Naval Academy. "RDF (Resource Description Framework) triple data format is simple and flexible, making it easy to express diverse datasets such as connections between users on social media, financial data and transactions, medical data, and many others. Rya provides a scalable solution to store and query such data. The publication of the first research article about Rya garnered interest from industry, academia, and several government agencies. Bringing the project to ASF allowed collaboration and increased pace of development." With its ability to store billions of linked information sets and return answers to most computer-based questions in under a second, Rya's scalable RDF data management system is built on top of Apache Accumulo® to support SPARQL queries for RDF data. A MongoDB back-end is also implemented. Rya uses novel storage methods, indexing schemes, and query processing techniques that scale to billions of triples across multiple nodes. Rya is in use at organizations such as Enlighten IT Consulting, Modus Operandi, Parsons Corporation, Semantic Arts, Semantic Web Company, Sierra Nevada Corporation, and U.S. Department of Defense agencies. Apache Rya is recognized as one of the most advanced database projects in the United States Department of the Navy, powering a new generation of drones, advanced tactical communications through manned-unmanned teaming, and supporting autonomous swarms of smaller robots, among numerous other applications. In addition, Apache Rya is being used for artificial intelligence projects involving semi-autonomous content production operations. Re: Rya website buiding - Jekyll question
docker does not work for me... I tried deleting target, restarting computer :), and then bundle exec jekyll build but no change. I opened a pull request against the master, if someone else wants to merge that and generate the asf-site with the current directory structure and then merge it. However, this is indeed frustrating. Any objections if I change the links in the navigation bar and commit the website as it currently builds? I wanted to modify the website to remove the md5 and sha1 links and change the post about 4.0.0 release to say it was fourth not third release. However, when I build the site with jekyll it generates .html files from the .md files, it does not generate folders. For example I end up with a download.html file instead of a download folder with an index.html in it - which is the current website structure. Anyone knows how to change this? Aaron? [DISCUSS] Rya graduation to top level project
Hi, I would like to start talking again about graduation, After another successful release, it is time (or past time) to discuss whether we are ready to graduate. Rya has entered the Incubator almost 4 years ago. During this time, the community increased and diversified, and we became familiar with the Apache way. We had four releases, done by three separate release managers. We added two people as committers and PPMC members. I think we can continue to grow the community, and increase the activity level, but I think we can continue doing that as a TLP. What do people think? Rya proposal for Google Season of Docs - mentor needed
Hi, As you might be aware of, Google is starting a new program this year, Google Season of Docs https://developers.google.com/season-of-docs/. Technical writers will be paid to work on open source projects. ASF will apply for the program, and I believe Rya can benefit from the help of a technical writer. I was planning to submit a project proposal and volunteer as a mentor. Each proposal needs two mentors, so if anyone else is interested, please let me know. In particular, if you worked with a technical writer before, that experience would be useful now, but not required. Also, if people have ideas on proposals to submit, let's talk about it. I was thinking one idea is the query optimization part - we need better documentation on how it works and how to use it. I agree with supporting two branches of development for now: 3.x and 4.x. In the 4.x branch we should update all dependencies, as Jurgen suggested. I think it is OK to update the master to be the 4.x development line. Thank you Josh for starting the discussion and Keith for agreeing :) Rya had 2 releases as Apache incubator project and we are working on the third one, each with a different release manager. We added two committers and PPMC memebers so we are now familiar with the process. I'm not aware of any IP issues. I'll look at the graduation guide Josh pointed out and let's see what we need to do. Thank you, I'll try the fix. I would suggest that something needs to change in the tests so the error is not produced if the user is not interested in the Mongo back-end. Those who use Rya with Accumulo probably don't need MongoDB, but they would still have to have MongoDB installed and running to get past these tests and be able to build with a simple mvn clean install. Rya
Rya (pronounced "ree-uh" /rēə/) is a cloud-based RDF triple store that
supports SPARQL queries. Rya is a scalable RDF data management system built
on top of Accumulo. Rya uses novel storage methods, indexing schemes, and
query processing techniques that scale to billions of triples across
multiple nodes. Rya provides fast and easy access to the data through
SPARQL, a conventional query mechanism for RDF data.
Rya has been incubating since 2015-09-18.
Three most important issues to address in the move towards graduation:
1. Have more releases as part of the Apache Foundation
2. Increase diversity of contributors.
3. Continue to harden and develop core Rya features to improve user
experience

Hi Gimhani, Dropbox sometimes does not work inside the VM - we noticed that from my university environment too. You can download the Rya sources from http://www.apache.org/dist/incubator/rya/rya-incubating-3.2.10/ and build Rya from source with mvn clean install, or if you can access the dropbox location from outside VM, then download outside VM and place those files in a location accessible from VM. For example, I put the same files on my website at https://www.usna.edu/Users/cs/adina/research/ so I could access them from VM. You will need to change the Vagrant script to get the files from whatever different location you place the files. I'll try to look myself at this over the weekend, but I'm surprised by both issues and maybe someone here knows the answers. What was the functionality provided by tinkerpop.rya and how come that it is not used? I thought it was used to keep the schema graph in memory to be used by the inference implementation. Are we using an old version of tinkerpop, or why does it bring in LGPL dependencies - Apache TinkerPop is a top-level Apache project. No How has the community developed since the last report? * A new committer was invited and accepted to join the committers for Apache Rya (incubating). * Talk on Rya at the DC Graph Database meetup on August 30, 2016 * Online presentation on Rya to a group of researchers and developers from Cray on September 29, 2016 * Talk on Rya entitled "Accumulo Indexing Strategies for Searching Semantic Networks" accepted at Accumulo Summit, October 11, 2016 * The Rya "office hour" teleconference continues every other week, with few exceptions when people are too busy. Users and developers can ask questions, receive answers, discuss ideas for future developments. The minutes are sent to the dev@ list. Attendance at these meetings has grown beyond existing committers of the project to include new contributors. New contributors have led the discussion for new features that they have helped develop. We continue posting minutes and reference slides from the meetings on confluence to provide reference documentation to new contributors. * PRs from non-committers which are integrated into the repository continue to be received How has the project developed since the last report? * Worked on the first release. The first release candidate was proposed, but the vote did not pass on the dev list. Working on the next release candidate. * Resolved a handful of issues that users have encountered. * Committed features: benchmark tool for the pre-computed joins optimizer, added support for property chain inference, integrated Fluo with Rya so triples inserted in Rya are inserted into Fluo too in order to incrementally update any pre-computed joins registered with Fluo, added OPTIONAL support for pre-computed joins Date of last release: Not applicable. Initial vote on first release candidate did not pass on dev list. Working on the next release candidate. When were the last committers or PMC members elected?
