I deleted newt.gpg and trusted.gpg then:

Hey Kevin,
I've never seen this error. Looks like there is something wrong with your
installation though. If apt ignores your trusted.gpg file it won't load
anything from the mynewt repo. You'll have to fix that first - I'm afraid I'm
not an expert in that.

I have successfully upgraded from Debian Stretch to Testing (Busty) and
installed openocd:
root@kgdebian:~# which openocd
/usr/bin/openocd
root@kgdebian:~# openocd -v

Thank you Markus for your reply. I will upgrade to testing and try a
re-install of openocd. I tried ubuntu 17.1 but my nivdia graphics boards
proved difficult with "tearing".

I'm running Debian Testing and use the stock openocd that comes with it. I use
the newt tools from the runtimco apt repo. Everything seems to work well and I
don't remember there being any issues with dependencies.
