2007/11/16, Nathan Bubna [EMAIL PROTECTED]: hmm. do you think this is something worth re-rolling the release? It's really annoying for maven-based software (like Struts 2) that use Velocity Tools. In Struts 2 it was necessary to exclude the servlet-api 2.3 to make it work. And it is wrong: it has to be provided since it is usually provided by containers. I know that my vote is absolutely not-binding, but it is very annoying: a commit for you means less configuration for the rest. 2007/11/16, Henning P. Schmiedehausen [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Nathan Bubna [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Nothing should *ever* provide the servlet API or jar. Some releases of tomcat explicitly stopped deploying the jar in versions. It is a compile dependency. That is all. The runtime (servlet container) should provide the API. This is exactly what the scopeprovided/scope means: it is a compile dependency, but it is already provided by a container. See: http://maven.apache.org/guides/introduction/introduction-to-dependency-mechanism.html With this scope, the dependency is not transitive. In Struts 2 we use servlet-api 2.4, while in velocity-tools it is use 2.3. With the compile scope, the dependency is transitive, and to use the 2.4 we need to exclude explicitly the 2.3 version, inherited by velocity-tools. Would it be worth it to re-roll the release and keep the maven mavens happy? sigh. i always forget the maven stuff. i write myself notes to remember these sort of things when rolling a release, but then i forget where i put the notes. :) thanks for catching this stuff. i don't really mind re-rolling the release, as i have that process fairly streamlined. i'm not all that thrilled about asking ya'll to have to re-vote and all that. but since you apparently check them more thoroughly than the rest of us, i suppose that's the biggest burden on you. :) No big deal, but if we did re-roll it, we should fix: * readme.txt file has the old URL for Velocity, not the new one. * readme has the old email list addresses. * the readme.txt has conflicting info on required JDK for building. On line 32 it claims a min of 1.3.1. Line 75 says 1.4. But actually it requires 1.5 (or so ant tells me). not worth it, but since i'm re-rolling, i suppose i might as well... I ran ant test under JDK 1.4 (failed with appropriate error message), JDK 1.5 (worked) and JDK 1.6 (worked). I'm -0 due to the pom issue but would flip to +1 if someone tells me this is ok or it's fixed.
