further research in this area. There is some info in the wiki on the

Looks like my previous problem with yum update was with build 766

I'm running 760. I just edited ReadEtextsActivity.py to change the font

I then ran ReadEtexts and the change didn't show.
I removed ReadEtexts.pyc and ran. ReadEtexts fails to launch. The bottom

Do we support Java in our browser?
I may have a large opportunity in the Americas dependent on our ability
to support their application which I believe requires Java.
I did read this page: http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Java
Is there any news or latest thinking since then?

Can we get a show of hands on who downloaded joyride 2230?

A request for clarification here. Are you looking for keyboards designed

I recently upgraded to Joyride and am having trouble with the microphone.
In the powerup selftest the microphone works, but the level of the

The microphone does not work in Record or Measure.

can you check if the java plugin gets installed in /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins?
Can you tell me how did you installed it? Which rpms/tarballs did you use?
I'm answering on David's behalf. It sounds like he saw the restricted

I'm trying to get Panda3D running on an XO, as a feasibility study, more

I've successfully loaded Panda3D and Mesa-OpenGL. When I try to run a

I've spent some time debugging trac #6532: SD corruption on

by multiple G1G1 users. Doing a full USR may be overkill for this

That said, there's a separate bug in trac about X not starting when

The real issue is that there is no way to back up a user's data if the OS is
borked sans developer key. If the autoreinstallation image's backup features
were incorporated in offline upgrade, that would solve a lot of headaches.

Ok, I started this thread. So here's why I was asking.
I'm on board with Todd's comments. I got a XO though G1G1 and one of the
listed features was 'view source'. Meaning specifically to open the
Python underlying an activity.
I discovered that 1) very few activities currently support this. 2)
There's a lot of discussion about whether OLPC is an education project,
or a laptop project. Many folks here think that recent developments show
that the balance is tipped to the latter rather than the former.
It's neither. It's a _sales_ project. If people don't buy them, it
doesn't matter

Walter,
I didn't mean to minimize the successes that the XO has had to date.
Nicholas' projections were undeniably optimistic
Ok, Here's where it gets scary.
That being said, I believe Bill G is a prime example of 'Daniel
Plainview' capitalism -- it's not enough for him to win, everyone
else has to lose. So OLPC has to be careful.

Ok, back to development issues.
'View Source' is touted as one of the user win features of the XO. There
doesn't seem to be much useful discussion of it on the wiki.
What's the best path for making an activity 'view source' friendly?
Reverse engineering from Chat, which is? Some other way?
Richard,
Sorry.
1) I knew about the separate memory for the firmware. I've reloaded it
often enough :-). I was more interested in publishing that thinking
deeply about how the XO works.
2) Again, sorry about my loose use of language. I should know better,
and try to be more precise. However,
Where we fail to meet expectations is when G1G1 users change
from the old, monolithic, OS + activities to the new, unbundled
OS without hand-holding (installing the G1G1 activity bundle).
And, in fact, last I checked our Wiki had the correct instructions for

I'm trying to edge my way into the development community here.
Initially, I'd like to be able to update activity bundles. As a test

I'm trying to get to the point where I can create and commit a changed
bundle. I started down the path at
