I know they have been deprecated and can be replaced with Data, but we still
use the ISO and Export domain types and like having them.

Cheers!

[ovirt-devel] Re: Can anyone help me to upload the img file into the ovirt 4.5

2024-03-25 Thread Albert Esteve
Hi Prabu,

With ovirt 4.5.2+ you can use the ovirt-img command, which more
feature-rich, fast, and reliable than the UI:

$ ovirt-img upload-disk \
--engine-url https://engine.com \
--username admin@internal \

--cafile /path/to/cert.pem \

--storage-domain mydomain \
/path/to/iso

You can also add configuration for your setup (you can have many):
$ cat ~/.config/ovirt-img.conf
[engine1]
engine_url = https://engine.com
username = admin@internal
password = password
cafile = /path/to/cert.pem

And then just select the section name in the configuration that you want to
use:
$ ovirt-img upload-disk --config engine1 /path/to/iso
[ 100% ] 6.00 GiB, 33.02 s, 186.07 MiB/s | upload completed

Check `ovirt-img -h` for more details.

That said, this looks like the socket file is missing. Have you checked
`/run/ovirt-imageio/sock` exists in your hosts?

BR,
Albert

Hi Prabu,

Can you describe the cli procedure you are using?
From the Web UI, there are some caveats to consider, like uploading the image
from a Wi-Fi-connected computer or using a VPN connection.
Also, can you inform the rpm versions for the qemu-kvm, libvirt, and vdsm

I'm happy to have a crack at Issue:

It seems to me that just a couple of extra lines that detail how you get the

I'm not sure if my email made it to the list, so re-posting for the ovirt list

Dual AMD FirePro D700 graphics processors with 6GB of GDDR5 VRAM

no, not really. There's very little new development these days, bugfixes

significant. That said, the latest 4.5.z should work decently on CentOS Stream 9

So the options are:

1. Using Managed Block Storage (cinderlib) with a driver that supports
NVMe/TCP.

Lastest oVirt has the needed changes to configure this. Benny and I tested
with Lightbits[1] driver in a
virtualized environment. This is basically a POC that may work for you or
not, or require more work
that you will have to do yourself since not much development is happening
now in oVirt.

2. Using the devices via multipath

Legacy storage domains are based on multipath. It may be possible to use
multipath on top of
NVMe devices, and in this case they look like a normal LUN so you can
create a storage domain
from such devices.

oVirt will not handle connections for you, and all the devices must be
connected to all nodes at the
same time, just like FC/iSCSI LUNs. You will likely not get the performance
benefit of NVMe/TCP.

3. Using host devices

If what you need is using some devices (which happen to be connected via be
NVMe/TCP), maybe you
can attach them to a VM directly (using host devices). This gives the best
possible performance but no
features (snapshots, backup, live migration, live storage migration, etc.)

Subject: [External] : Re: [ovirt-devel] Re: Jackson-databind related changes

Hi,

oVirt Engine is using JBoss Modules feature to load libraries, so when a
library version is mentioned in pom.xml it's unrelated to which version is
being using during runtime. Here's the detailed description:

1. jackson-databind 2.12.7 mentioned pom.xml is actually being used only when
building the project directly with maven (development purposes)

https://github.com/oVirt/vdsm-jsonrpc-java/blob/master/pom.xml.in#L61

https://github.com/oVirt/vdsm-jsonrpc-java/blob/master/client/pom.xml.in

2. When building the project as a part of RPM build, then maven (respectively
xmvn) is invoked to use only libraries installed locally as a part of RPM
dependencies

https://github.com/oVirt/vdsm-jsonrpc-java/blob/master/vdsm-jsonrpc-java.spec.in#L46
So on CS8 we can easily find out the jackson-databind package version being
used during RPM build
# dnf repoquery --whatprovides 'jackson-databind >= 2.10.0'
jackson-databind-0:2.10.0-1.module_el8.4.0+595+e59c9af2.noarch
jackson-databind-0:2.10.0-1.module_el8.4.0+782+1d1c31a0.noarch

3. On runtime vdsm-jsonrpc-java is being loaded using JBoss Modules as a part
of oVirt Engine:

https://github.com/oVirt/ovirt-engine/blob/master/backend/manager/dependencies/common/src/main/modules/org/ovirt/vdsm-jsonrpc-java/main/module.xml
which shows that vdsm-jsonrpc-java depends on
com.fasterxml.jackson.core.jackson-databind module, which is included in the
relevant WildFly release.
Currently oVirt Engine is using WildFly 24.0.1, so you can see
jackson-databind version using following command:
# rpm -ql ovirt-engine-wildfly | grep 'jackson-databind-'

/usr/share/ovirt-engine-wildfly/modules/system/layers/base/com/fasterxml/jackson/core/jackson-databind/main/jackson-databind-2.12.3.jar

So if you want to bump jackson-databind version for oVirt Engine runtime you
have two possibilities:

1. You can deliver updated JBoss module as a part of
ovirt-engine-wildfly-overlay RPM:
https://github.com/oVirt/ovirt-engine-wildfly/overlay
2. You can try to bump WildFly to latest version in ovirt-engine-wildfly RPM:
https://github.com/oVirt/ovirt-engine-wildfly/
Please be awate that at the moment it's not possible to use latest WildFly
version, because oVirt Engine is using classic security model, which was
removed in favor of Elytron in WildFly 25.
So to bump WildFly version, you would need to implement changes in oVirt
Engine to use Elytron.

Regarding verification the best way is to verify functionality by execution of
oVirt System Tests:
https://github.com/ovirt/ovirt-system-tests

Martin

[ovirt-devel] Re: Jackson-databind related changes

2023-09-14 Thread Shubha Kulkarni
Hi All

I am yet to get any feedback on my query. So I thought I will reach out again
to see if any one has comment on this -

Background:
I see the commit for CVE-2020-36518 to vdsm-json-rpc to bump jackson version to
2.12.7
https://github.com/oVirt/vdsm-jsonrpc-java/commit/d1f423809fd491da7b5324b308dac896ded645a7
This change in only made in pom.xml is made with "default" scope (i.e compile).

Queries:
#1. So at runtime, that means this jar should be explicitly packaged somewhere
else. I am wondering how is this newer jackson jar is picked up? Does it have
anything to do with the change outside pom.xml that I don't see?

#2. Ideally, I would like to verify that vdsm-jsonrpc-java application is using
jackson-core2.12.7 and jackson-databaind 2.12.7-1 when installed on engine
system. What is the best way to do it?

Thanks

Hello!

There have been changes added to ovirt-engine and vdsm-jsonrpc-java repos to
address security vulnerabilities in jackson-databind package. I see that the
change is made to bump up version of jackson-databind package to 2.12.7.1.
I am wondering what is the rpm version for ovirt-engine and vdsm-jsonrpc-java
that has these fixes? Also, I am curious what is the best way to validate these
changes?

If you'd like to get them moving forward, please review them. You don't
need to be one of the people with merge rights there in order to review.
Your feedback may still help getting the PR in or getting it improved or
getting it rejected.

[ovirt-devel] Ovirt Admin VM Portal url Not Loading on the Browser After Successful HE Deployment.

2023-05-21 Thread igwevic70
Hi there,

I need some help here, please.

I am new to ovirt and I am trying to setup ovirt 4.5.4 a test env. I have
successfully deployed HE using "hosted-engine --deploy" after days of
encountering a lot of issues, but the current issue now is that I can't access
the VM Portal ie WebUI, where I can create VM from the Admin portal. One thing
I noticed is that during the deployment process, it supplies a temporary url
link like "https://ovirt-node-03.projectplus.com:6900/ovirt-engine; to access
the web but when the deployment is done, it kills the this url and it becomes
unavailable with no web access again

Can someone please please, help me to understand what's going on. I have done
this deployment nearly 10x but still getting the same thing, I can just have
webui access to the Admin Portal.

Thanks in advance for your help.

[ovirt-devel] Invalid value '-1' for 'cpu.max': Invalid argument

2023-05-13 Thread lejeczek via Devel

Hi guys.

with latest stable ovirt node, hosted engine setup fails at,
I guess late stage:

...
[ INFO  ] TASK [ovirt.ovirt.hosted_engine_setup : Notify the
user about a failure]
[ ERROR ] fatal: [localhost]: FAILED! => {"changed": false,
"msg": "Host is not up, please check logs, perhaps also on
the engine machine"}

as setup sits & waits for a while, before it errors out, I
see this in logs:

...
12687 still running (84875)
Invalid value '-1' for 'cpu.max': Invalid argument
12687 still running (84870)
12687 still running (84865)
12687 still running (84860)
Invalid value '-1' for 'cpu.max': Invalid argument
...

and logs continue after engine setup has finished.
I've browsed around but resolutions I found did not help,
also I suspect it might be a bug thus any comments on how to
fix it, are very much appreciated - btw, why BZs reports
should go?

[ovirt-devel] Console Disconnect Action

2023-05-12 Thread Shubha Kulkarni
Hello,

I am experimenting with the feature ‘console disconnect action’ . It provides
four actions on disconnect.

 Lock screen - This is the default option. For all Linux machines and for
Windows desktops this locks the currently active user session. For Windows
servers, this locks the desktop and the currently active user.

 Logout user - For all Linux machines and Windows desktops, this logs out the
currently active user session. For Windows servers, the desktop and the
currently active user are logged out.

 Shutdown virtual machine - Initiates a graceful virtual machine shutdown.

 Reboot virtual machine - Initiates a graceful virtual machine reboot.
In my testing, the shutdown and reboot options worked. However, lock screen and
logout user option did not work for me.

I looked around and found out that qemu-guest agent has no command to log off a
user. I see ovirt-guest-agent has some code to logout user as described below -
https://github.com/oVirt/ovirt-guest-agent/blob/master/ovirt-guest-agent/LogoutActiveUser.py
However, it turns out that the ovirt-guest-agent is not supported anymore. So I
am wondering how the ‘lock screen’ and ‘logout user’ is implemented and whether
it is still supported/supposed to work?

Thanks,
Shubha

my understandign is generally tehre is not much value in setting it above 1
unless you have multiple vitio-scsi contolers
in which case you shoudl add 1 io thread per contoler and affinitese the scis
contoler

https://libvirt.org/formatdomain.html#controllers

if you have enabeld multi queue for the block devices i dont know if that
enables it to use more then 1 io tread
i.e. perhaps 1 per queue

the docs for the iotrhead subelemnt state
"""
iothread

Supported for controller type scsi using model virtio-scsi for address
types pci and ccw since 1.3.5 (QEMU 2.4) . The optional iothread attribute
assigns the controller to an IOThread as defined by the range for the domain
iothreads (See IOThreads Allocation). Each SCSI disk assigned to use the
specified controller will utilize the same IOThread. If a specific IOThread is
desired for a specific SCSI disk, then multiple controllers must be
defined each having a specific iothread value. The iothread value must be
within the range 1 to the domain iothreads value.
"""
so i would asssume multi queue will not help.

we have had enableign iothread in openstack on our backlog for some time and
unfortunetly we have not done it yet so i can really
provide any feedback on our expince with it but ^ is what i figured out was the
intented usage when i breifly looked into this
a year or two ago.

adding iotrehad alone wont help but adding iothread and mapping contoler to io
thread and spreadign your disks across those contoler enables scaling.

if your are usign virtio-blk not virtio-scsi i think you get most of the
benifig form just adding a singel io thread to move the io off the main
emulator thread.
when addign a virtion block device
https://libvirt.org/formatdomain.html#hard-drives-floppy-disks-cdroms

you can impove the performace by turing the queues and the queue size
or changing the cach modes

"""
The optional cache attribute controls the cache mechanism, possible values are
"default", "none", "writethrough", "writeback", "directsync" (like
"writethrough", but it bypasses the host page cache) and "unsafe" (host may
cache all disk io, and sync requests from guest are ignored). Since 0.6.0,
"directsync" since 0.9.5, "unsafe" since 0.9.7
"""

and you can also do per disk iothread affintiy

"""
the optional iothread attribute assigns the disk to an IOThread as defined by
the range for the domain iothreads value. (See IOThreads Allocation).
Multiple disks may be assigned to the same IOThread and are numbered from 1 to
the domain iothreads value. Available for a disk device target
configured to use "virtio" bus and "pci" or "ccw" address types. Since 1.2.8
(QEMU 2.1)
"""

but i dont know if qemu or libvirt will round robbin the disks or ottehrwise
try and blance the disk aross the io trhead automatically.

i think like the contoler the same restirciton of 1 thread per virtio-blk
applies so haveign more io thread then disk will not help.

>
> I can't find recommended configuration regarding this parameter.
> My question is which value is should use for this , when having 60 high
> performance disks mapped to my VM
> Somebody any answers
i think if you have a vm with 60 disk using iotrhead is likely very important
but i suspect 60 iothread woudl be overkill
even if that gave the best throughput. so there is proably a sweet spot
between 1 and 60 but i dont know where that lies
i normally work on openstack so ovirt is outside om my normal wheel house as
such an ovirt experit might be able to give better guidance
on what the approate value woudl be in an ovirt context.
i woudl start with one and then go to a nice power of 2 like 8 and messure.

ultimately the optimal value will be a tread off of the cpu overhead, disk
configuration (virio blk vs virtio-scsi, local vs remote storage, cache
modes) and the hardware you have combined with the workload so without
meussruing there is know way to really knwo what the optimal amount is.

[ovirt-devel] Ovirt 4.5.0 Support (End of Life Date)

2023-05-08 Thread masood.ahmed--- via Devel
Hi,
I am working on a project and we would like to utilise (oVirt 4.5.) as the
platform for our enterprise infrastructure.
We have arrived at this juncture because of a range of considerations related
to hardware and software availability and compatibility.

My question is if there is on-going vendor \ professional support for oVirt
moving forward, as one of my colleagues spoke with Red Hat, who stated they are
going to end their support for the product.

we will not gain security accreditation for our project unless we have
professional support available, community support only is not sufficient,

Any ideas of firms available for a support contract for oVirt 4.5.0?

Hi,
I am working on a project and we would like to utilise (oVirt 4.5.) as the
platform for our enterprise infrastructure.

Any ideas of firms available for a support contract for oVirt 4.5.0?

thanks

I remember increasing vhost threads can improve network IO but you're dealing
with disk IO of course. BTW, why do you need 60 disks mapped to this VM?

[ovirt-devel] IO threads versus number of diske mapped to VM

2023-04-18 Thread Jacob M. Nielsen
Hi List

I have trouble to find information regarding how to performance tune my IO on
my VM.
We see bad performance max 30 MB/s from the VM to the storage (Posix mounted
file system)
We have tested the filesystems locally from the Ovirt host , and we can easy
get +500MB/s

Found a parameter

2

I can't find recommended configuration regarding this parameter.
My question is which value is should use for this , when having 60 high
performance disks mapped to my VM
Somebody any answers

tnx

Hi,

this is a libvirt issue that was already fixed. When to expect a fix in
centos I cannot say. See the related issues [1][2] for more info.

Hi, there's no documentation related to installing oVirt on ARM64 as nobody
worked actively on that feature within the community.
Packages built for ARM are available in CentOS repositories:
CentOS Stream 9:
https://mirror.stream.centos.org/SIGs/9-stream/virt/aarch64/ovirt-45/
CentOS Stream 8:
http://mirror.centos.org/centos/8-stream/virt/aarch64/ovirt-45/

You can read more about ARM64 compatibility in this thread:
https://lists.ovirt.org/archives/list/devel@ovirt.org/thread/NE3LANVZHLN4MQD75C5KYM6IEOYSVED2/#WE2HNYTTPTUH3GSMBHRP6DPLEVH7ZXHU

Huawei also mentions running oVirt Engine on ARM64 on their Kunpeng
Virtualization Boostkit:
https://www.hikunpeng.com/document/detail/en/kunpengcpfs/ecosystemEnable/oVirt/kunpengovirtoe_04_0001.html

This part is probably requiring some additional work, would be nice to see
this getting included in oVirt 4.6.
Are you going to start looking/working into this?

[ovirt-devel] Support for ARM 64

2023-04-13 Thread shubha . kulkarni
Hello,

I am trying to understand support for ARM architecture in OVirt.

I came across this oVirt doc
https://www.ovirt.org/documentation/installing_ovirt_as_a_standalone_manager_with_local_databases/index.html.
It mentions ‘The oVirt project also provides packages for the 64-bit ARM
architecture (ARM 64) but only as a Technology Preview.’
So I am wondering where I can find the packages and document/steps to install
oVirt on aarh64 architecture.

Also, I looked at upstream oVirt engine source code and saw no reference to
ARM CPU types. So I am wondering if the engine running on x86 system supports
adding ARM 64 host.

Thanks,
Shubha

[ovirt-devel] Re: Error: Adding new Host to ovirt-engine

2023-04-04 Thread Yedidyah Bar David
Hi,

Sorry, but I do not follow oVirt development closely anymore.

I guess it's due to a newer ansible (-core) using a newer python which
is missing some of our dependencies - see also e.g.:

https://github.com/oVirt/ovirt-engine/pull/826

Not sure about current status.

You might try to work around this by downgrading ansible-core on the
engine machine, until this is fixed.

Best regards,

[ovirt-devel] Re: Error: Adding new Host to ovirt-engine

2023-04-04 Thread James Wadsworth
Hi Didi, we are exactly in the same situation. We are running ovirt 4.5.4 on
all hosts. We did a backup of the ovirt-engine, when we then chose one of our 3
hosts to redeploy the ovirt-engine. On the host for the redeploy we have the
ovirt-engine running correctly. However when we try reinstall other two hosts
to add them back into the cluster we encounter the same error.

FAILED! => {\"msg\": \"The conditional check 'cluster_switch == \\\"ovs\\\" or
(ovn_central is defined and ovn_central | ipaddr)' failed. The error was: The
ipaddr filter requires python's netaddr be installed on the ansible
controller\\n\\nThe error appears to be in
'/usr/share/ovirt-engine/ansible-runner-service-project/project/roles/ovirt-provider-ovn-driver/tasks/configure.yml':
line 3, column 5, but may\\nbe elsewhere in the file depending on the exact
syntax problem.\\n\\nThe offending line appears to be:\\n\\n- block:\\n -

We have the hosts running RHEL 8.7. The self hosted engine is runing on Centos
Stream 8. Before we redeployed the ovirt-engine, the ovirt was running on RHEL
8.7 which we had previously migrated from Centos 8.4.

On the engine we have the following:

Hi,
we had to reduce the hosting a bit and the repo is not used by any of the
currently running CI systems, so we have decided to shut it down a month ago.
It's not a problem to keep building the images, we just don't have a good place
where to store them.

any machine capable of running OST is also capable of building the images from
https://github.com/oVirt/ost-images

Thanks,
michal

[ovirt-devel] ovirt-system-tests

2023-02-08 Thread stephan . duehr
Hi,

about two years ago, I used OST to setup a oVirt test/dev environment.

Now I tried again, following
https://github.com/oVirt/ovirt-system-tests/blob/master/README.md
but it fails because https://templates.ovirt.org/yum/ is unavailable.

Or isn't it meant to be available for public access any more?

Stephan

[ovirt-devel] oVirt 4.5.2 - Add Gluster Volume fails via Ansible & Cockpit

2022-11-13 Thread simon
I posted this in the Users group but perhaps it needs to be in Development as
I’ve not had a response yet.
Hi,
In 4.4 adding additional gluster volumes was a simple ansible task (or via
cockpit). With 4.5.2 I tried to add new volumes but the logic has
changed/broken. Here's the error I am getting: TASK

There were efforts, several years ago, on porting oVirt to
Debian/Ubuntu. I do not think this ever matured enough for general
use. See also e.g. these, and note that they are all old and
unmaintained:

From quick skimming, it seems like the above post describes how to
install an Ubuntu _VM_ inside an existing oVirt setup (which itself
does not run on Ubuntu - or at least, the post does not discuss that).

That's currently the best option for learning/playing/testing.

[ovirt-devel] Re: Installation of Ubuntu 22.04 on my Ovirt

2022-11-10 Thread Rob Linden
Hello!
I'm not sure if it's _possible_ to install oVirt on Ubuntu, but it isn't
supported:
https://www.ovirt.org/documentation/installing_ovirt_as_a_self-hosted_engine_using_the_command_line/#operating-system-requirements_SHE_cli_deploy
There are older tutorials that claim it works, like
https://blog.eldernode.com/install-and-configure-ovirt-on-ubuntu-20-04/
I have not tried that.
What You could do (and which is what I do, although not on Ubuntu) is to
run a virtual machine with qemu/KVM and on that VM You'd install CentOS
Stream and there You can install and run oVirt. I think that might be
easier and/or more reliable (because it's tested better) than getting oVirt
to run directly on Ubuntu.

rob

[ovirt-devel] Enable DCO app on github for enforcing signed-off-by

2022-10-26 Thread Nir Soffer
I'm not sure we enforce signed-off-by in all projects, but we do in the
most important
projects. There is a nice little app adding CI check with zero effort. Here
is
a bad commit:

https://github.com/nirs/userstorage/pull/29

When the check fails the app provides useful help for users:

https://github.com/nirs/userstorage/pull/29/checks?check_run_id=9125092601

Looks like very little effort to improve all projects!

If you wandered what signed-off-by means, this is explained here:

https://wiki.linuxfoundation.org/dco

[ovirt-devel] Re: GWT in project ovirt

2022-10-24 Thread Sharon Gratch
Hi,

Adding a short explanation for the info sent by Didi below:

The *VM portal* is fully implemented using React, Redux, and PatternFly 4:
see [3]

The *Administration portal* is a GWT-based implementation, i.e. the
application root as long as most of the (old) dialogs/menus are implemented
using GWT (and customized Patternfly 3).
But since GWT is an old and not so supported technology, a list of
new/updated dialogs which were added to the Admin portal are implemented
using React and PatternFly 4. This is done by using the ui plugin api
implementation [2] and a dedicated webAdmin ui extensions based on React
which is created specifically for that: [4].

The current list of dialogs implemented by this extension includes the
following:
https://github.com/oVirt/ovirt-engine-ui-extensions/blob/09ce8b943f4cc977b510f204941093306b2d89d7/packaging/spec.in#L40-L50

Our recommendation is to use and implement new dialogs/menus for the
Administration portal by using that ovirt-engine-ui-extensions React
extension.

Which ui plugin do you refer to and for which purpose?

Thanks,
Sharon

I also ran basic-suite on the two of them together - that's just
a sanity test, the patches should mostly be irrelevant on the same
machine - and it passed, so I think we can merge them. As noted,
this isn't enough.

What version of ovirt-engine-appliance do you have there?

I think it's due to having ansible-core-2.13 on the engine. Should not
happen with the latest versions.

[ovirt-devel] Adding documentation - Migrating from a self-hosted engine to a standalone

2022-10-24 Thread David White via Devel
Hi. I'm working on adding instructions to the documentation for how to migrate
from a self-hosted engine to a stand alone manager. This will be the first time
I've contributed anything to this project (or any larger open source project
for that matter), so before I get too far in the weeds, I wanted to run this by
the community so as not to waste my time if this is a bad idea.

My general high level documentation is here:
https://pastebin.mozilla.org/YyOOVRFZ
These are the steps that I took when I did my own migration.

(Note to self: Need to add a step at the end to log into the Manager and
disable the Gluster service by going to Computer --> Clusters --> (Edit the
cluster) --> Uncheck the "Enable Gluster Service" checkbox.

And I've forked the ovirt-site repo and started working on the documentation
here: https://github.com/dmwhite823/ovirt-site/tree/migrate-engine-to-standalone

I still have a ways to go before I'm ready to request a PR, but I'm open to any
& all feedback.

No custom configuration of any kind, just following the documentation to get a

[ovirt-devel] Creating an oVirt Engine Appliance on a different EL Distro (eg Rocky Linux)

2022-10-24 Thread Matthew J Black
Hi All,

Here's an interesting question (that I originally asked in the Users List, but
which someone suggested I ask here - so I am):

What is the process (ie the Step-By-Step process) to create an/the oVirt Engine
Appliance
based on another version of EL (ie in my case, Rocky Linux)?

Is there a "Manual" somewhere? I mean, surely the oVirt Project's Release
Manager has *something* that they follow to create the relevant rpm file - no?

Cheers

[ovirt-devel] separate DWH/grafana machine with keycloak enabled

2022-10-24 Thread Yedidyah Bar David
Hi all,

$Subject is currently broken.

We do not have yet an open bug for this but did have a few related
(but different) ones, including:

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2122174
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2113980

While looking at this, I decided it's about time to have
ovirt-system-tests test this flow, as it seems it's not tested enough
otherwise.

Right now, I managed to make it all work, but do have some open
questions, thus current email.

What I have right now
=
1. This harmless patch to the engine, to just add new library code,
only to be used (for now) by grafana setup code (later):

https://github.com/oVirt/ovirt-engine/pull/669

I see no obvious reason to not merge it already, but if it turns out
that only grafana setup is going to ever use it, it might be easier to
move this code there. In principle it can be useful also for OVN, as
commented there.

2. This patch to DWH. It's "mandatory", but not enough to get a
complete solution. Should be ready for merge. Requires above engine
patch.

https://github.com/oVirt/ovirt-dwh/pull/57

3. This PR for ovirt-system-tests:

https://github.com/oVirt/ovirt-system-tests/pull/293

What's inside:

3.1. "Make grafana test use grafana_fqdn" - should be trivial and harmless.

3.2. "WIP: Add separate-machine-basic-suite-master" - started as a
copy of basic-suite-master. Much of it is links to there. To review
the rest, you can compare with relevant files in basic-suite. "WIP",
because it's not enough, see later, but is probably more-or-less also
ready for merging.

3.3. "WIP: Add the dwh/grafana host name to keycloak redirect URIs" -
this is where my main question/issue is. Without this, our setup code
sets redirectUris to point only at the engine machine, so when trying
to login to grafana with SSO, you get an error from keycloak, e.g. as
in:

https://stackoverflow.com/questions/51275797/invalid-redirect-uri-keycloak-when-client-is-not-on-localhost

When configuring things manually, it's up to the user to handle all of
this. This applies either to oVirt users that want to do this
manually, or to RHV users, where keycloak is not integrated:

https://blogs.ovirt.org/2019/01/federate-ovirt-engine-authentication-to-openid-connect-infrastructure/

https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-us/red_hat_virtualization/4.4/html-single/administration_guide/index#Configuring_RHSSO_ldap

So it sounds like it makes sense to fix this in dwh/grafana setup
code, not in OST, right? But this is slightly more risky and annoying,
as we'll need to prompt asking the user for the keycloak admin
password. Perhaps we do want to do this anyway, but perhaps it's
enough to document how to do this manually (and keep this patch in OST
as an implementation of this document).

3.4. "WIP: Copy test_verify_engine_certs to test_001" not sure I
always needed it, but should be harmless. Perhaps should be done more
nicely somehow also for other suites.

Opinions/comments/ideas/suggestions/whatever are most welcome!

Thanks and best regards,

Building engine in dev env mode should always use classic online maven
build.
Here is the fix to achieve that without the need to specify OFFLINE_BUILD
option value:

https://github.com/oVirt/ovirt-engine/pull/676

Sorry for the mess.

2022-09-23 Thread Michal Skrivanek
Hi all,
we are going to bundle maven dependencies in a new package
ovirt-engine-build-dependencies. This allows us to use CBS to build
ovirt-engine as any other package, and enable el9 builds.
This is just a build dependency, there's no change to a built product.
We will now start publishing el9stream builds of ovirt-engine and start
switching testing to el9

[ovirt-devel] oVirt bug reports to move from bugzilla to github issues in future

2022-09-06 Thread Michal Skrivanek
Hi all,
as a final stage of out gerrit to github transition that started ~9 months ago
we are planning to eliminate the use of bugzilla.redhat.com for all oVirt
projects (bugs with Classification: "oVirt") and use the native issue tracking
in github as well. We used to have integrations with gerrit and bugzilla that
we moved to github actions instead, and the overhead (and notorious slowness)
of bugzilla.redhat.com becomes the only "benefit" of using it these days.
There's about 50 bugs total left in oVirt bugzilla so it's not that much to
move, the biggest change would be that the new bugs are to be filed elsewhere.

This is just a heads up for now, we haven't set a cut off date just yet, but
you can expect this change in the coming weeks.

Thanks,

[ovirt-devel] vbmc - simple IPMI support for oVirt VMs

2022-09-05 Thread Michal Skrivanek
Hi all,
I wanted to share the news about a new oVirt (mini)project - vbmc[1]. It's
fairly small and simple, but it may be handy if you'd like to treat oVirt VMs
as bare metal machines controllable via IPMI. It only implements power on, off,
reboot, and set boot order, but that should be enough for bootstrapping over
pxe.

[ovirt-devel] Re: Starting with oVirt

2022-09-02 Thread Strahil Nikolov via Devel
Hardware wise - try one server with CentOS Stream 8 and check that all hardware
is recognized and works as expected.
You can start with a single server and expand further. RH dropped Gluster
Support for their downstream solution (RHV) , yet oVirt doesn't have plans to
get rid of it.
The easiest for you would be to use SAN or NAS as storage. If that's not an
option, you can use GlusterFS - which is a distributed File System . The latter
needs a 10GBE NICs (1 Gigabit is OK, but don't expect much speed when writing
in the VMs).
oVirt supports GlusterFS in 2 modes:- replica 1 - a mode intended for a single
host setup- replica 3 (where you have 3 copies of your data) - where the
storage nodes should be multiple to 3. You can also have compute-only oVirt
nodes (those do not participate in GlusterFS but have CPU & RAM to host VMs)
If you configure HA VMs , the engine will take care to recover them on another
host. If you loose 2 out of 3 servers - GlusterFS will loose majority of the
bricks (term for a host+mount point combination) and will shutdown until
majority is restored.
In all cases - you should segregate the network for Storage and Compute
workloads (Gluster/NFS on separate network).

P.S.: iSCSI is also a storage  option.

[ovirt-devel] Macintosh-oVirt integration with new VIRTIO compliant virtualization framework?

2022-09-02 Thread ovirt
Now that Apple has implemented a VIRTIO-compliant framework
(https://developer.apple.com/documentation/virtualization) has anyone tried
automating VM deployment to a Macintosh host using oVirt? I'm assuming this
would have to take the form of some sort of Ansible hack, correct? I can't
imagine getting a Macintosh to show up as a managed node would be a simple
task...

[ovirt-devel] Obsoleting Packages in 'dnf check-update' on RHEL 8.6 hosts

2022-09-02 Thread Scott Worthington
Hello,

My 4.5.1.3-1.el8 oVirt homelab cluster is running on RHEL 8.6 hosts and a
RHEL 8.6 stand-alone engine.

During the installation, I followed the instructions for RHEL 8.6:
https://ovirt.org/download/install_on_rhel.html

After the installation is complete, all packages are up-to-date, and
everything is running, I run a 'dnf check-upgrade' and I find there are
two packages that are listed under "Obsoleting Packages":

"""
Last metadata expiration check: 0:43:06 ago on Mon 01 Aug 2022 08:08:50 AM
EDT.
Obsoleting Packages
centos-stream-release.noarch 8.6-1.el8

  @@System
redhat-release.x86_648.6-0.1.el8
  @rhel-8-for-x86_64-baseos-rpms
"""

For the hosts, it makes it appear that the hosts always have an upgrade
pending in the oVirt Engine UI.

"centos-strea-release.noarch" appears to contain similar files to the
original RHEL 8.6 package "redhat-release-8.6.0.1.el8" except for the
addition of "centos*" named files.

Any thoughts on how to change this behavior so that it doesn't appear to
have packages to upgrade because a 'dnf update' does nothing to these
"Obsoleting Packages"?

Thanks in advance.

[ovirt-devel] Update project settings for required CI tests in vdsm and ovirt-imageio

2022-09-02 Thread Albert Esteve
Hi all,

We have recently updated the CI tests in the vdsm repository, and split
storage tests into 'test-storage-root" and "test-storage-user".

However, the latter is still named "test-storage" (
https://github.com/oVirt/vdsm/blob/master/.github/workflows/ci.yml#L13) as
it was a required CI job in the project settings. Ideally, we would need a
project owner (or someone with write permissions) to remove "test-storage"
from the project requirements and add "test-storage-user" instead, for
consistency.

Similarly, in ovirt-imageio, centos-8 and fedora-35 shall be removed in
favor of their current counterparts:
https://github.com/oVirt/ovirt-imageio/pull/99
Otherwise, the branch above cannot be integrated.

I do not have the permissions, but in my fork I found the place where to
change it (i.e., the branches settings):

Could someone with permissions take a look? Thanks in advance!

And if you do not get an update, try first 'sudo clean all'. The correct version
is:

python3-otopi-1.10.3-0.0.master.20220825055305.git7e9995c.el8.noarch

Also: If you run engine-setup and it outputs nothing, you should update otopi.

There was a bug in the copr build of otopi, that the release wasn't
changed between builds. So the updated otopi didn't get a new release.
I fixed it this morning. So please update otopi. Sorry for the mess...

BTW: You can also run 'OTOPI_DEBUG=1 engine-setup' and get an error message.

Don't think so. Looking at the implementation [2][3] it seems passing a
cmdline argument is the way to go. You can probably define the copr repo
by yourself, but I think the former is an easier option.
