Laura, A few thoughts. You may need to have loaded mod rewrite in your main apache server configuration. Look up mod rewrite. I would put this in the virtual server configuration not in an htaccess file. Unless it's required to propagate the ability to set server directives to authorized users or

Morning update: I found another mail program for my phone that works. I'm hoping I can get the default app to work eventually though. I also got my wife's iPhone working. Incoming mail is still going to my home server, which is fine for now, and outgoing is relaying through the linode box.
