Re: [tdf-discuss] Change executable names

While I absolutely agree that the executable names should be changed, file associations needs a bit more than that, I was very glad to see that LibO brought back the ability to choose file associations for Word, Excel and Powerpoint file types at install time, but more is needed - the associations for the newer XML formats need to be treated separately, so, instead of just 3 associations, there would be 6. With that one difference in mind, I'd *love* to see LibO implement something along the lines of my long-standing request (77257) for a proper 'File Extension Manager' (which was created long before the new XML formats): http://qa.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=77257 -- Best regards, Charles -- Unsubscribe instructions: E-mail to discuss+h...@documentfoundation.org Archive: http://www.documentfoundation.org/lists/discuss/ *** All posts to this list are publicly archived for eternity ***

Several people have commented here that Calc sounds like a calculator program, not one with the kinds of features a spreadsheet provides. A spreadsheet is well understood to provide not only calculations, but also simple database-type and text layout capabilities -- there are plenty of people who use a spreadsheet when what they're really doing is creating a text document! Spreadsheet includes, but is not limited to, calculations, so being a spreadsheet is more accurate. It truly is the purpose of Calc (or Spread, or whatever we call it). However I think for 3.3 it is better to maintain the OOo names and then (3.4, 4.0, ...) rethinking icons, names and so on. Any documentation released with the first LibO will necessarily have the old names to avoid delays, but we'll need this determined soon for the development of LibO-specific documentation.
