This is clear...

but then my question is:
- Why do I have to submit a paper without knowing if I'm going to be select
for presentation?
- And why 7 months before of the conference?

It looks to me quite strange...

Previous FOSS4G's had abstract review by the academic committee
and selected authors were asked to submit full papers closer to
the conference dates.

I see that we do not have an academic committee in place for FOSS4G 2013
and I agree with Maxi that the submission 1 Feb 2013 deadline for
FOSS4G-2013

Academic track is too early.

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] points of interest database

2013-01-23 Thread Raj Singh
I do follow the draft W3C spec in terms of the data model and XML encoding. We
never got to the JSON and RDF encodings as the effort stalled in W3C.

In OGC we're starting a group to create a standard for the data model, XML and
JSON encoding. That list will be private to OGC members as it will be a SWG.
We'll keep people updated here as well.

The RDF and Microdata work is going to continue in a W3C community group:
http://www.w3.org/community/places/
We can talk semantics there!

I don't know how big the database dump will be. Hopefully I can get that posted
in a day or two.

[OSGeo-Discuss] Reminder: Call for Papers FOSSGIS 2013 in Rapperswil, Switzerland

2013-01-23 Thread Elisabeth Leu
-- Last days of Call for Paper! Submit until January, 31. 2013! --

The FOSSGIS-conference is the largest german-language conference for Free
and Open Source Software for GIS and Free Geodata hosting about 400
participants.

Today, the Conference Committee announced the "Call for papers" for 2013.
Because the conference-language is german, the CfP is either.

The program committee will, however, also consider applications for talks
or workshops held in English if they are deeemed to add to the quality of
the conference. So if you don't speak German, but are a FOSS/Open Data
celebrity, or have a story that only you can tell, please feel free to
submit your talk. We are unlikely to be able to provide interpreters, but
we'll make sure you don't get lost in Germany.

Please be aware that you can submit paper until January, 31. 2013.:
http://www.fossgis.de/konferenz/2013/callforpapers/

We are looking forward to see you in Rapperswil (Switzerland) June 12-14.

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] points of interest database

2013-01-23 Thread Vasilis Vlastaras
Dimitris and all,

Cloudmade provides dumps of the openstreetmap data in various formats
including shapefiles for all over the world. Those dumps have POIs
included.
All these can be found in:

http://downloads.cloudmade.com/

Checking around Raj's OpenPOIs, I see that POIs come from geonames or
dbpedia datasets. Geonames already mentioned earlier.

DBpedia, an attempt to provide structured information extracted from
wikipedia, provides dumps in N-Triples and N-Quads. Data provided
include geographic information as well.
The dumps for version 3.8 can be found in:

http://wiki.dbpedia.org/Downloads38

Also, LingedGeoData is an attempt to provide linked data between
openstreetmap / DBpedia and GeoNames.
The datasets can be found in RDF format here:

http://linkedgeodata.org/Datasets
http://downloads.linkedgeodata.org/

Vasilis.

Hi Raj,

thanks for the prompt reply!
if you can send me a postgres/postgis dump, this would be extremely
useful! (thanks!).
By the way, (and this is the main reason that I address it to the list,
too) do you plan to follow/adapt the corresponding W3C recommendation or
do you already do that?
If not and if you need some involvement for the semantic part I would
also be happy to participate.

2013-01-23 Thread Dr. Franz-Josef Behr
Thanks for the discussion, and I can imagine that there might be a risk
involved if somebody decides to make a submission.

But that's the way reviewed contributions are going to be published.

7 months before the conference is not early, if we are lucke, we can
handle the review, selection, publishing process in time.

2013-01-23 Thread Massimiliano Cannata
Dear Dr. Beher,
apologize me for this question, but it is not clear to me if at this stage
you are asking to submit an abstract for evaluation or a full paper for
evaluation.

In last years, generally I submitted an abstract, then if selected for
presentation in academic track I where asked for a full paper,
and then if selected I had to go trough a review process by the editors.

Is it this the case, or rules have changed?

Regards,
Massimiliano
