Subject: [OSGeo-Discuss] Unable to access the geotools Maven repository

Hi All,

The Maven repository at http://download.osgeo.org/webdav/geotools/ asks for
user/password since Today and this is breaking our dependency on GeoTools. This
repository is still referenced in the official documentation at

 http://docs.geotools.org/latest/userguide/tutorial/quickstart/maven.html

Is this a server configuration issue? Am I missing something?

Thank You in advance,

Best

Michele

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] FOSS4G 2018 sponsorship

2018-02-25 Thread bradh
Indeed GDAL/OGR uses some ESRI code, example:

https://github.com/OSGeo/gdal/blob/a1df7cb9df2fe3cbcfac974b434b01ac6a1946e5/gdal/frmts/mrf/JPEG_band.cpp#L21

If you don’t want anyone with competing products, it’ll be a short list, and
somewhat difficult to justify (e.g. OSGeo has lots of software that is mostly
developed and tested against Oracle’s Java, but Oracle Spatial is an
alternative to PostGIS). If you don’t want anyone who does patents, it’ll
exclude most of the big IT companies.

Is this just an emotive response?

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] ESA-NASA WebWorldWind

2018-02-14 Thread bradh
Patrick,

Please don’t misunderstand – I’m happy that NASA does great things with open
source.

I did have a quick look at the difference on the GeoTools GeoPackage fork, and
it looks like there are some useful fixes in GeoTools that WWSK doesn’t have,
and some fixes in WWSK that GeoTools doesn’t have.

It’s up to those that write the code to decide whether to contribute back to
upstream projects (with all that this entails – legal issues, workload, long
term intent), and when. I think it would be great to get the fixes and
improvements into the upstream projects. Clearly that can’t happen without
Contributor License Agreements in place, but after that, you can propose
improvements and PRs as for any other contributor (just like me).

Brad,

As I tried to make clear from the beginning, we are very glad to contribute, by
providing ^supported^ access to our experience going down the GeoPackage road.
We just need someone else taking the lead. If our experience, on full display,
can be of help, we are most glad to coordinate in that contribution.

Everything the NASA WorldWind project has developed since 2002, has all been
open source. Before there was a Goog Earth there was NASA WorldWind. And I
might add, it was born of the NASA Learning Technologies program, entirely
focused on Education.

Unfortunately, we simply cannot take the lead on ^smartly^ bringing our
GeoPackage work into GeoServer. But we are glad to coordinate with someone
capable and interested enough to do that. AS they say, it takes a village. :)

OK. So the answer to my original question of " Can I ask if there are any plans
to contribute back the forked geoserver and geotools parts?” that NASA does not
currently plan to do so.

I’m sure the GeoServer and GeoTools communities would be happy to work with you
(see http://docs.geotools.org/latest/developer/procedures/contribute.html and
http://docs.geoserver.org/latest/en/user/introduction/gettinginvolved.html)
when you’re ready.

Thanks for your continuing support for open source.

Brad,

Life is work! We have not suggested “changes. . .just be taken from WWSK.”

We have done quite a bit of work to get GeoPackage working with GeoServer. I
believe it is good work.

We are glad to work with someone who would like to take the lead in benefitting
from our experience and incorporating the best of that into GeoServer.

We are quite occupied and focused in other areas, all open source. And though
we are glad to help GeoServer benefit from what we have learned, we are unable
to take the lead in that exercise.

So, if this is of interest, great! If not, that’s fine too. We are simply
offering the opportunity for someone appropriately qualified and interested, to
work with NASA and benefit GeoServer.

Just so we’re clear – the geopackage stuff in WWSK is a fork of (i.e. copy
from) the community modules in geotools and geoserver. For example, see

https://github.com/NASAWorldWind/WorldWindServerKit/blob/develop/worldwind-gs-geopkg/src/test/java/gov/nasa/worldwind/gs/geopkg/GeoPackageGetMapOutputFormatTest.java

Some changes have been made (including rebranding the Java namespaces). Clearly
the changes can’t just be taken from WWSK, as noted in the OSGeo links in Ian’s
email.

I just hadn’t seen any communication or PRs, and wondered if that was the
intent. I’m a bit surprised by the wording in your email though – if you have
contributions, then why not just propose them like other contributors do?

Our GeoPackage work to facilitate that via GeoServer is extensive and carefully
architected. And we’ve discovered some other good things that would certainly
advance GeoServer.

https://github.com/NASAWorldWind/WorldWindServerKit

NASA is prepared to work with someone close to GeoServer for these features and
improvements to be ‘folded-in.’ We are glad to coordinate with a most
appropriate person who would take the lead in that effort.
