If you want a fairly simple, effective amp; fairly cheap backup option
you could look at a service such as crashplan.
For about #163;35 a year I've got unlimited back up storage with
versioning in case I duff something up myself.
I also do an occasional USB drive backup too.

I second that. Whilst the breadth of functionality is great for core
users, it is far from pick up play for parties.

as an overall adjustment to volume that you can set
manually.
Finally, I have sbs set to smart gain if I remember correctly.
This means my iTunes, squeezeboxes and iPhone all have levelled music.

Maybe try looking at some in MP3Tag checking id3v1 2 tags. I
recently used media monkey to totally remove all id3v1 tags in my
library having made sure the v2 ones were in order) as they seemed to
be causing problems with some tracks in SBS.

As mentioned before, you may have to remove your music and rescan it
(can't rememberas I did this a while ago).
Regardng ripping, you need to alter the iTunes settings so it rips to
the music folder on your nas.
That should be you soreted.
