[slim] Please help me get internet access back on XP !
Hi I have Win XP SP3 on Asus P5K-E/WIFI-AP m/board with Intel E8400 4 GB DDR 800. Yesterday I used Windows Update (as usual) to download latest updates - both critical optional). Since then I can get no internet whatsoever ! All browsers just give non-connected screens. The WiFi network icon appears to show full connection (including internet), but there is no real internet connection. Ethernet is normally disabled on this machine ( I note that one of the hardware updates was an Ethernet driver). I've tried repairing the connection but this doesn't help. Any ideas ? Thanks Touch x 2, Booms x 2, SqueezeCommander on Galaxy S2 (Duet Receiver + Controllers x 2 - semi-retired) swayzak's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=16575 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=100613 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Setting up my system (2 x Touch Mac Mini)
It sounds as if you are using Music Folder, which is probably the slowest of browse methods, especially for someone with a lot of objects in the folder. So if you don't have the B folder further divided into sub-folders such as Jeff Beck, Beatles, etc. then you are really shooting yourself in the foot. Even if you have sub-folders for each artist in B, some of those 26 alphabetic folders are likely to have 200+ sub-folders. All of the other browse methods rely on the database that LMS builds, so browsing is both faster and more flexible. Maybe you're already using those and it's still too slow, but that isn't clear from your post. If you are using those methods and it's still too slow, then the issue could be an underpowered server, network latency, or something else. EDIT: You're confusing LMS and mysqueezebox.com (aka mysb.com for those of us too lazy to type the full name in forum posts), as well as confusing what each of them does. You definitely need LMS to play your local music. And no, mysb.com does keep a log of your music so that you can play it from remote locations. Rather, mysb.com gives you access to internet radio and online services such as Pandora, Deezer, Spotify, MOG, Rhapsody, Slacker, etc (depending on what country you live in) so that you can listen to music when your computer running LMS is switched off.[/QUOTE wrote: Thanks for you reply and sorry that I wasn't clear. Yes, the path to each artist would be as follows: Music (the drive name) / Music Folder / B / Jeff Beck / Name of Album. That's how I decided to do it about five years ago and I seemed like a good idea then. However, I have tried the search function to see if it was quicker and no, not really. I'm not sure what you mean by an underpowered server but I would be prepared to try a different drive for storage. My only criteria is that it is 4TB and most importantly, low power usage. Re: [slim] Setting up my system (2 x Touch Mac Mini)
If your files are properly tagged and organized with LMS running on a decently powered computer your Search results should be very snappy. LMS is running on your Mac Mini, correct? 4 TB drive connected to same Mac Mini? Anything besides music files on this drive? Mac running any other program/process besides LMS? Mac Mini is wired to router? toby10's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12553 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=100611 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Thanks Unfortunately SR is disabled on this particular PC (it's my music studio PC). Maybe I should try uninstalling those updates ? I have an imaged partition which I can revert back to - but this would be the last resort as it's quite old would require numerous software updates / installations to bring up-to-date. Yes, tried repair (see original post). No joy. Also router reboot. One other thing I could try is whether wired ethernet connection works I suppose.. What causes connection to appear fine, but no internet ?? Yes, try wired connection first to make sure it's not the router. Do you have other devices that work fine through the router? Other things to try: - reboot into safe mode and see whether wifi works there - try to download and install a wifi driver from your manufacturer. reinholdk's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=36070 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=100613 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Possibly gateway ip address has not been set up. Run ipconfig in a command prompt window and look at interface subnet mask and gateway address and see if they are sensible. If unsure how to read it - copy the output to a file (e.g. ipconfig output.txt ) and attach it to a post bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=100613 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Setting up my system (2 x Touch Mac Mini)
Do the aiff files have any tags ? that would enable LMS to built a proper dB when scanning and the much faster artist / album / genre menus would start working properly . But they rely on proper metadata in the files themself . and search to uses the dB it probably eventually go for file names when nothing else match ? Or does it even work at all ? JJZolx wrote: I've tried to convince some technically semi-literate friends that if they buy a NAS and use RAID there is a very good chance that when (not if) they lose a hard drive, they or the hardware or the software are going to f**k thingS up before or during the rebuilding process to make that array unrecoverable. In most cases it will be user error. I also try to convince them of the need for backups, but some see that RAID array as the solution to their problems. Two of them lost arrays completely, and one had no backup and lost everything. Constantly mirroring is both senseless and dangerous. If you consider this to be a 'backup', then it completely defeats the purpose of having a backup. If you accidentally delete something, or the files are inadvertently changed or corrupted or, then the deletions, unintended changes and corruptions are then mirrored to the second system. If you're using mirroring for backup, you should only do backups manually and you should do something to assure yourself that the original library is healthy before performing a backup. For a music library, you can get a file count to guard against deletions, and if the files are encoded in FLAC, you can run a test across the library to be sure files are not corrupted. You can also often run mirroring software with a test switch to first see how many files will be copied. In this case constant mirroring provides instant fallback operation should 2 drives in one enclosure fail. I couldn't possibly consider that either senseless or dangerous. Perhaps I did not make it clear that this is TWO NAS enclosures and that the mirroring provides a CONSTANT backup. Unlike most Linux-based home-office NAS the Synology also support Recycle Bin on a folder by folder basis and there is also a setting that can restrict Recycle Bin access to administrators only. banned for life's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=56269 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=100561 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Yes, a constant backup is the only way to ensure that you don't lose a day or a week or a month's updates, but I consider that to be a very small amount of work to duplicate considering the potential danger. You can always backup more often if you consider it too risky. You're essentially implementing another level of RAID, protecting against an increasingly unlikely catastrophic event, rather than a backup solution.
