[slim] Madness: Softsqueeze, SqueezePlay, Squeezebox Desktop

2010-02-01 Thread luuk

Have the developers gone raving mad? I tried to find Softsqueeze, then
discovered it is now called SqueezePlay, so I go to the wiki, where I am
told under the heading of SquuezePlay: SqueezeBox Desktop is a
replacement for SoftSqueeze and is based on the SqueezeOS software
platform. To make the confusion complete, when you then click on
nightly builds in SqueezeBox Desktop can be downloaded from the Nightly
Builds, you end up on the Squeezecenter nightly release page where
neither SqueezePlay nor SqueezeBox Desktop is mentioned.

Well done guys! BTW, who is going to put a stop to all these ludicrous
name changes. Doesn't anybody know the importance of a good brand name
9and sticking with it)?

Re: [slim] Madness: Softsqueeze, SqueezePlay, Squeezebox Desktop

2010-02-01 Thread Siduhe

Lots of the names have changed with recent rebranding, and yes it takes
a bit of getting used to. However, Softsqueeze and Squeezeplay are very
different programs - and Softsqueeze is still available.

This recent thread should have all the info you need:

http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=64814

To find Squeezeplay, you need to go into the actual nightly builds for
7.4.2 - it's only compiled for Windows right now:

Re: [slim] Madness: Softsqueeze, SqueezePlay, Squeezebox Desktop

2010-02-01 Thread bpa

Squeezeplay is a replacement and a totally different player to
Softsqueeze - not a renaming.

In summary

SqueezePlay is written in Lua - implements new Controller and player.
Softsqueeze is written in Java - emulates SB2,SB3, Boom and Transporter
displays
Squeezeslave is written in C - originally no display and intended to be
a player in the background on a PC.

SqueezePlay is the UI and player in Controller, Radio and Touch. It
can play lots of audio formats. SqueezePlay Desktop is a version of
SqueezePlay but for PCs - it omits the licensed code such as WMA and AAC
decoders which means SqueezePlay

I think the moniker SqueezeBox Desktop is a typo by someone.

You can find Softsqueeze under 3rd party plugin - Community
Softsqueeze.
SqueezeSlave can be found in Sourceforge
SqueezePlay for OSX, Windows etc can be found in nightly downloads
although since change of licence there are other builds now available
from users.

These two options are redundant, you only need one. I'd suggest
removing string--retry/string

I've been investigating this issue with 7.4.2 over the weekend.

It appears that remote streaming causes a deadlock situation in the
pthreads code. Why it works fine when playing locally stored music and
not remote streaming has eluded me so far. It is not OS specific as
I've been able to reproduce it on linux and Windows as well. If you
want to use squeezeslave with remote streams you'll need to roll back
the server to version 7.3.x of squeezecenter as remote streaming works
fine there.

Bug '14740' (https://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=14740) has
been opened for this issue. Details of the problem can be viewed there
along with my finds so far.

Unfortunately, I'm not going to have much time over the next month to
research this issue so for now the work around is to use 7.3.x.

Re: [slim] Madness: Softsqueeze, SqueezePlay, Squeezebox Desktop

2010-02-01 Thread luuk

Thanks for the help. Sorry for giving the impression that Squeezeplay is
a replacement of SoftSqueeze. I was looking at it from the user point of
view and am well aware that we are dealing with two different products.
I hope the error in the Wiki will soon be corrected. As to the
rebranding ... you can kill an otherwise decent product by rebranding it
too often. Most ordinary users like myself use a product and that is
usually it. They do not follow forum discussion so are not normally in
the know about name changes and the like, yet they need to update their
software every once in a while, which is when confusion strikes.

I took advantage of this offer when it was available in December. I
have not regretted the purchase one bit.

One other question to ask yourself - where will the unit be located?
As mine is located in my home theater cabinet on a lower shelf, the
touch interface would be of little use to me. The SB3 or Classic meets
my needs almost perfectly (the USB interface might be handy once in a

Re: [slim] What's next for VortexBox???

2010-02-01 Thread matka

I'm not a vortexbox user as I'm comfortable with dyi linux server, but
my friend expressed interest and the following might increase the appeal
for the appliance:

1. easily configurable rsync backup to usb or a network drive. By easy
config, I mean a page with combination of cron and options
(remote, local, rotating snapshots perhaps). Once people start ripping
their data, fast and reliable backup is top priority. I have seen your
command line help but I think this is to tech for an appliance market

2. Provide a batch mass conversion tool from audio codec to audio codec
while preserving artwork and tags. There was a post few weeks ago (I
believe that was a vortexbox user) asking for help mass converting from
m4a to flac. I did eventually came across Perl Audio Converter that will
probably do the trick for this user, but it would be nice to have
preinstalled script that fits into distro

3. Remote desktop or VNC as a backup way of performing some tasks that
are not possible via web interface or for a feature that was not
requested/coded yet. Again, command line as today probably shuts some
potential users off. Plus some people might be surprised to see how
attractive Fedora desktop is...

Yes to all your questions:

All the hardware players run on the current software (though the old
SB1 is getting a bit clunky I understand due to hardware/buffer
limitations).

You can control all of them with the duet remote.

You can sync them using the remote.

Re: [slim] Will old Slim Devices work with new Duet system...

2010-02-01 Thread aubuti

If the old style 'original' is a SliMP3 or SB1, then you may not be
happy with sync performance. Those models have very small buffers, which
sometimes causes sync problems. On the other hand, a SB2 should work
fine. The SB2 looks a lot like the SB1. The best way to tell the
difference is to look on the label at the bottom. The SB1 says
Squeezebox and the SB2 says Squeezebox2.

The SliMP3 and SB1 have other limitations, such as 'b' rather than 'g'
wifi and native support for a more limited range of audio codecs (eg, no
native FLAC). You may want to take a look at the 'hardware comparison in
the wiki' (http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/HardwareComparison).

[slim] No Album problem

2010-02-01 Thread MillmoorRon

I have a lot of songs that are not actually part of an album - EPs,
singles, session tracks, freebies from band's sites, etc - so they have
a blank album tag. Squeezebox server doesn't seem to handle this very
well!

When browsing by artist (mostly with iPeng these days) I then get a 'No
Album' entry for each artist for where songs are missing the album tag.
This would be OK if it didn't always show the artist as 'Adam...' - this
being the first one alphabetically - and the cover as a random one each
time I rescan!

(It is even worse when browsing using the web interface where I get a
no album by 'aaa, bbb, ccc, ddd, etc...' which includes EVERY artist
with a song without an album tag - more than 200 of them.)

I have successfully used Custom Scan and Custom Browse to create a menu
through which I can browse these songs in a logical manner but I feel
there must be a better way of handling these tracks through the standard
interface.

Have I inadvertently changed a setting which is causing this behaviour
or is this normal?

How do other people get round this 'problem'?

option you get when you have it set to small mode?

Re: [slim] Will old Slim Devices work with new Duet system...

2010-02-01 Thread usch

I have a Boom and two SB1, and while synchronizing them is possible and
works fine most of the time, there are massive problems that keep
popping up, such as playback stopping with no apparent reason, or
players going mute until I power cycle them to recover. This is probably
a server problem that could be fixed, but I don't really expect that
anybody still wants to spend time on these old players.

Another limitation: SB1 and SliMP3 won't connect to mysqueezebox.com,
and are not officially supported by the TinySBS in the upcoming Touch.

Re: [slim] Rebuffering is ruining the Squeezebox experience

2010-02-01 Thread wonder boy

On 7.4.2 with 3 wifi players. Reasonably stable at the mo, though can't
believe what the microwave does to the signal. I have found that
increasing the minimum sync adjustment (as well as making sure all are
the same which they weren't) and also the sync players start up delay
has helped.

Annoyingly any rebuffering I get is intermittent, I think the neighbour
must be hammering the microwave meals...HTH

[slim] Transporter Volume Control

2010-02-01 Thread xcraft

I would like to hook up the transporter directly to an amp but I know
there are issues with this due to line level balancing. Not exactly an
audiophile amp but I'm considering the Cerwin Vega Pro Cv-1800. It has
XLR inputs which should work nicely. I would like to use the volume
control on transporter. Will I have any issues with this?

Many if not most 'baby monitors', cordless phones, 'tv extenders' and
wireless alarm systems spew junk on 2.4Ghz.

It's unlicensed because it is not all that great a frequency range to
begin with and so everyone uses it.. which makes it more junky.

They don't need to be radiating their food to plasma, just watching TV
with one of those I am too cheap to run Cable to the bedroom, so I'll
use a 2.4Ghz TV relayer to send it from the living room... boxes.

[slim] Jazz FM 91 from Toronto Canada

2010-02-01 Thread norderney

I have been listening to Jazz.FM 91 from Toronto via the URL:
http://216.123.189.13:8000/ but this stream is only 48k CBR

The station has e-mailed me another URL which is for their AAC+ feed,
but it does not appear to work. The exact URL they sent me was:
rtmp://streamerdelta.jazz.fm/livejazz/livestream

Note it begins rtmp does this signify something or has it been
mistyped?

When using this URL it just appears as File Format Unknown.

They gave me another link to this AAC+ feed which is
www.jazz.fm/listen, but this only works from a web browser.

Any ideas?

RTMP is a Adobe Flash protocol - so it is a Flash/AAC stream which is
not natively supported by Logitech.

That said, BBCiPlayer plays streams from BBC which are Flash/AAC (i.e.
rtmp URLs) but the implementation is set up to only play RTMP streams
from BBC source so you cannot just enter the URL into the Tune-in box or
as a Favorite.

Re: [slim] Rebuffering is ruining the Squeezebox experience

2010-02-01 Thread Pascal Hibon

It’s true that some “alien devices” such as TV extenders etc use the
2.4GHz band as well. Especially the TV extenders can be a source for
interference since they use directional antennas with relatively high
gain.
In most cases, it is possible to keep your home wireless network free
from interference. It all comes down to selecting the right channels.
What most people are not aware of is that you should try to use only
channel 1, 6 or 11 in a 2.4GHz band although 11 channels (FCC) or 13
channels (ETSI) are available. These three channels are non-overlapping
channels and so they can provide the full bandwidth available. Not
everyone will be able to “site survey” their home environment but there
are a few simple applications available that provide basic but useful
information in order to properly setup your home wireless.

1. NetStumbler: http://www.netstumbler.com/downloads/ This free utility
scans the environment for wireless networks. It will tell you on what
channels they are active. With this basic test you can see with channels
are occupied and so you can configure your own network to operate on a
free channel. If no channel is free, then select one were the used
signal is weak (low SNR level).
NetStumbler is able to see networks that are not broadcasting their
SSID’s as well. It is a very good tool.
2. Some Windows drivers provide basic channel information (like
NetStumbler) as well. For example: Intel, Toshiba etc. If yours doesn’t
provide it then use NetStumbler.
3. Another one, more complex and chargeable, is Wi-Spy:
http://www.metageek.net/ Wi-Spy is also able to run a recording over a
longer period of time. This will provide you with a better view of what
is going on in the 2.4GHz band. We use this at work during site surveys
and when customers complain about response times. Works great.

Hope this helps.
