Re: [slim] Announce: Whitebear Media Server v2.2 Released

2012-01-12 Thread Wigster

I doubt that this was ever possible; even in prior versions. Basically
WMP can only stream (Play To) tracks to other media renders (such as
Whitebear/LMS) that are in one of WMP's own *native* formats (e.g. pcm,
mp3, wma, wav). The Shark add-ins do allow WMP to play tracks locally
within WMP but they do not help WMP to stream those formats to other
3rd party players using the Play To command (don't ask me why). This is
a weakness of WMP and/or the Shark add-ins, and is not the fault of
 Whitebear or LMS.

But that's the thing: I've been playing local FLAC files for the past
3-4 months with no problems whatsoever (I could even play AAC etc, but
there were problems with moving from one track to the next, WMP would
cause the same AAC track to be replayed over and over). All of a sudden
it stopped working following the 7.7 upgrade. I'll try to downgrade to
see if I can play them again and do some track rescans.

I'm also pretty sure that the file format of SBS's FLAC files in the WB
library was FLAC rather than PCM, although not 100%, since I mostly use
WB to play local files of my laptop to the Squeezebox.

has a separator character for multiple items so if a track has a
complex artist tag like fredsjoe (where s is the separator
character) the scanner will split that tag into two artist entries in
the database. Does the SBS scanner handle complex genre tags in the
same way, using the same separator character? Or does a track with a
complex genre tag like rocksclassical remain unsplit as a single
entry in your SBS database?

If the SBS scanner treats complex genre tags in the exact same way as
it treats complex artist tags, then it is a trivial matter to implement
multiple genre entries in the Whitebear UPnP ContentDirectory. But if
complex genre tags have a different handling than complex artists tags,
it would require Whitebear to somehow read your mind about your chosen
personal encoding scheme for complex genre tags...

2012-01-12 Thread AndrewFG

Wigster;683359 Wrote:
All of a sudden it stopped working following the 7.7 upgrade. You are probably
getting mixed up here. There are two cases:

Case 1) if you have a control point that can serve native flac, then
Whitebear sets things up between SBS and the control point so that SBS
gets the track direct from the control point i.e. Whitebear plays no
role in actually moving the data.

Case 2) if you have a control point that can only serve pcm, then
Whitebear sets things up so that Whitebear becomes a transcoding proxy
between SBS and the control point, whereby Whitebear gets the track
from the control point in pcm format, and serves it to SBS as flac. The
reason for this double proxy transcoding approach is that pcm is the
must support format of UPnP, but SBS does not support pcm (at least
not for remote streams). WMP can only serve lossless streams in pcm so
case 2) is _always_ used when WMP does Play To a SBS player (by
Whitebear).

And the reason why case 2) won't work anymore with SBS v7.7 is that the
developers messed up something concerning x-audiocast-bitrate headers.
Grrr! I am developing, with the help of )p(, an update of Whitebear to
work around this v7.7 issue. However in the meantime downgrading to 7.6
should see you right, until my update is released.

The only things I saw from Logitech as CES were a funky rectangular
mouse, a keyboard, and some sort of iPod/iPad speaker system.

Nothing regarding the squeezebox. I was hoping for something, but I
have to say I'm not really surprised.

I know the Boom has been discontinued, but I wasn't aware that the
Radio was too. If that's true, that's not a good sign. Maybe it's a
glitch that it's not on the website at the moment.

There's nothing new for SBs at CES this year. They do have some
Bluetooth-based music players for smartphones and tablets, which they
already announced in late 2011 (for example,

h, all commercially available WIFI security protocols DO in fact
work with the SB players--no software updated needed! So something odd
is going on at your network/WIFI end. Post more details about your

[slim] Touch Server vs. remote access to LMS Synch.

2012-01-12 Thread yeomanspc

My daughter has a Touch which she uses from her apartment remotely back
to my LMS - so che can use MIP etc. and the advanced features of LMS
without the hassle of maintaining a server(although all the music is on
a USB drive and it works fine with Touch Server). Now she wants a radio
too. I have a couple of questions..

1. What happens if you have 2 players synced remotely? Does LMS
transmit 2 streams. Is this going to be unsynched by the time it gets
over the net?

2. Can TinySB support more than just itself as a player (i.e. would it
serve music to the radio - I appreciate she'd lose MIP function etc.)

Apologies if the answers are obvious - I should know better.

yes, the tinySB in the TOUCH can also serve music to the RADIO. And
they can be synched or not synched. My brother uses tinySB/attached

best and most secure encryption you can get on consumer routers.

As Gary suggests, more info player? encryption method?
Tried with NO encryption just as a test?
Sure the encryption passphrase is entered correctly? No spaces?
Sure you are connecting it to your network (not a neighbor's network

Sure no other router security is preventing connection? MAC filtering?
Max number of network clients set?

other possible cause besides powersupply ( yes use one with similar

SB3 was initially sold with wifi as an option so it can run without the

Re: [slim] Touch Server vs. remote access to LMS Synch.

2012-01-12 Thread Mnyb

if she syncs to your server you get two streams, I don't think lms can
diff between local or remote players.

Fyi the devs are implementing a scheme to make one squeezebox proxy for
the other to make mysqueezebox.com sync better and use les bandwith on
folks isp.

You can ofcourse bitrate limit her players so she don't play 24/96 WAV
files over the net :)

Or just bitrate limit the radio, when synced lms is bound to use the
stream both players can use so it will be the mp3 one .

Touch can act as server too, so the above only aplies when she's using
your server.

Other problems I've seen...

1. Depending on the encryption type, you may need to use the hex code
as opposed to the password.

2. The firewall may block your squeezebox. For a short period of time
I was having this problem consistently without any reason I could find.
It was likely firmware related as the problem went away without a

Gapless playback and full control over the audio buffers is also not
possible with the inbuilt player.

I'll recheck with Android 4 when it gained more market share, I think
they changed the APIs that developers can use, so I might be able to
use more of the inbuilt decoders.

For streaming via 3G with high probability you'd have to activate
bitrate limiting anyway, which will essentially convert all your tracks
to mp3 on the fly (provided that your server is fast enough for mp3
transcoding).
Most servers are.

Re: [slim] Brain Fart - iTunes install on the NAS Duo or PC

ituns on your laptop, pointed to music on your NAS. I don't think it is
even possible to install itunes on your ReadyNas Duo. There is a thingy
on the readynas that connnects with itunes in some way, but it is NOT
the itunes program. that definitely needs to be on your laptop.

Thank you for the gentle reply. Interestingly enough, I do have the
iTunes software installed on the NAS on media share M. Soo I know
- how did I get here? I'm going to try and move it back to the laptop-
when I have a few days to spare. I would like to know how this is
possible if anyone should know. Cheers, Rich

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] Music-Playback now on ANDROID! SqueezePlayer released to the market ...

2012-01-12 Thread prob

There are a number of android based tv boxes coming onto the market. If
Squeezeplayer could be installed that would be excellent as they have
good audio output. Anyone know whether any of these boxes allow third
party apps and whether squeezeplayer can be installed?

Random eg follows.

http://www.aliexpress.com/product-gs/482895988-ANDROID-2-3-TV-SET-TOP-BOX-HDMI-1080P-Bring-Your-TV-Alive-With-Android-PC-wholesalers.html

Alternatively, is the Revue now a proper Squeezebox client or can this
software be installed?

If these boxes run Android and the manufacturers didn't fail to
implement it correctly then SqueezePlayer will run on it :)

I'm afraid there is no more specific answer.

As one example: Google TV/Revue claims to run on Android - but actually
they run some very very special version, which fails to include the NDK
(so is not a full fledged Android port).
I finally wrote a blog post about it:
http://www.squeezeplayer.com/2012/01/squeezeplayer-and-logitech-revue-google-tv-a-complicated-story/

Having said that: right now I think 95% of settop boxes that claim to
run Android (and not GoogleTV) will be able to use SqueezePlayer. As
SqueezePlayer is available on two AppStores (i.e. Android Market and
AndroidPit) it can be installed at least on every device (even the
Kindle Fire, that does not support Android Market).
