[slim] Who is your favorite late night Talk Show host?

2012-02-07 Thread Ikabob

I am interested to know who are favorite non syndicated talk show hosts.
There are many national syndicated hosts( Hannity,Coast to Coast, etc)
but I do not know if there are many local hosts. For example, one of my
favorites is Steve Leveille on WBZ Boston.

Who are your favorite non-syndicated local all night talk show hosts
and why?

[slim] Which 1704 DAC

2012-02-07 Thread beetof

The DAC 19 uses 1704 DAC chips which are my favorite. They even use a
really good IV conversion stage with the 1704s that get the best out of

close to the DACs I build myself.

Based on this, I was looking after an 1704-chip DAC for use with a
Touch. Apart from the Audio-GD 19DSP (very nice indeed) and the ref5
(but I don't use balanced), I read about the Lite Dac-83, which gets
very positive comments on the net.
Any experience / comparison?
With thanks.

I like how the SqueezePlayer stops playback when it senses that the
headphones have been disconnected, would it be possible to
automatically start playing again if it senses that headphones have
 been reconnected?

I use the headphone socket on my phone to feed the aux input on my car
stereo, allowing me to stream music / internet radio from my LMS to my
car, it would be quite handy to be able to start/stop playback
 automatically without any other interaction.

Tasker is an app that will do this and much more. I use it to set all
the volumes to different levels when headphones are in use and they are
automatically reset when the headphones are disconnected.

Re: [slim] New Wireless Router Recommendations?

2012-02-07 Thread Soulkeeper

I've only used WRT routers for the last years, and they have all worked
splendidly with my Squeezeboxen.

I can recommend Linksys/Cisco E3000, E2000, and E1000, even WRT54GL if
you don't want 802.11n, all depending on the depth of your wallet.

Personally, I install 'DD-WRT' (http://www.dd-wrt.com/site/index) on
all my routers, but for normal use it's not necessary.

[slim] Napster UK closing down

2012-02-07 Thread TheLastMan

This may be old news, but I have just noticed that following its
purchase by Rhapsody Napster will close in the UK, and presumably the
rest of Europe in mid March.

This appears to be a total shutdown. It looks like we will lose Napster
streaming on our Squeezeboxes, Napster libraries and any saved
playlists.

Not all Napster services will be automatically transferred to Rhapsody,
you may have to take out a new subscription to Rhapsody or other
streaming service depending on the contract you are on - see here:
http://www.napster.co.uk/customerinformation/

The Rhapsody music library is similar and mobile off-line facilities
will remain. However it might be worth going to Spotify rather than
Rhapsody depending on which suits your needs best.

Those of us on the 5for5 deal (five mp3 downloads a month for £5) are
going to be terminated. We will lose our 5 mp3s as Rhapsody will not
be selling downloads, only offering streaming. What is more our
accounts are not going to be automatically transferred, we will have to
re-subscribe to a new service - presumably because it will be so
different from the old one.

That is a real disappointment for me as I have been able to download an
album a month for around £1 - £2. Sometimes £0 if the album had fewer
than 5 tracks. That effectively meant I was getting my Napster
subscription almost for free - as I would have been buying that music
in any case.

I will have to reconsider which streaming service to go with as an
alternative.

Any views on how Rhapsody compares to Spotify?

Will Logitech Squeezebox be offering a Rhapsody interface for UK
subscribers?

The Napster service will be replaced with Rhapsody. They even decided to
run it under the old name of Napster. Thus you Napster users might get a

Thanks Michael. Some subsidiary questions:

Will everybody be losing their Napster libraries and playlists?
Will the Squeezebox app look any different?
How will us 5-for-5 subscribers who are going to be cut off resubscribe

Napster doesn't have a bad reputation over here while Rhapsody has non
at best, I would keep the name, too.

Of course we'll have to see how the reputation can cope with the
smaller Rhapsody catalog, main argument for Napster over here was that
they had more content than Spotify et al.

one experimental new feature -- wake on lan. I believe you can safely
delete favorites now without ending up with an invalid favorites.opml.
Thanks to the beta testers and everyone else for the feedback.

Here's the detailed changelog:

Changes in 1.1.3

- Enhancements:
- Add experimental wake on lan (WOL) for servers on the local wifi
network
- Defects fixed:
- Improved connectivity checking behavior.
- #22: Fix favorite removal that would sometimes result in favorite
corruption.
- Fix favorite addition for some audio types (URL-based internet radio
services)
- Fix a few rare force-closes reported on the market.

Re: [slim] iPeng update: Let your Squeezebox get Social

2012-02-07 Thread pippin

There are new updates for iPeng and iPeng for iPad on the App store.

Changes are mostly details for the iPad App but iPeng for iPhone is now
no longer compatible with iOS 3.

IPENG FOR IPAD

* No winter hat icon anymore.
* Some stability improvements

IPENG FOR IPHONE

The App is now again on par with iPeng for iPad which means it does
include the improvements that have been made in the iPad App versions
before:

* Improved startup behavior and server detection
* Improved memory usage, should especially improve things on old
devices
* Popup notification when adding tracks to current playlist or
favorites
* iPeng now shows the currently playing track on the lock screen and
allows lock screen control (double-click the home button) if either
local playback is on or the keep connection setting is enabled.

There is one change that applies to both versions:

If you enable the keep connection option in iPeng Settings, iPeng
will now stay active even in the background for one hour. This will
allow you to

* use the volume keys while you are using other Apps or when the device
is locked
* automatically pause a Squeezebox whenever a call comes in even when
iPeng is in the background (Pause on Call) Option in the settings
* Use the lock screen information and control for your Squeezebox, not
only iPeng's player.

It does, however have a few side effects:

* It consumes battery (obviously)
* Every change to the volume you might do in other Apps feeds into your
Squeezebox
* You have to be careful with the AirPlay icon on the lock screen.
Remember that this does NOT work with the stream being sent to your
Squeezebox so iPeng has to play locally to make that work.

Have fun!

conservative, etc?

Also, I like listening to local stations. There's so much damned
fluff during the numerous commercial breaks, that I'd at least like
it to be relevant to my area. Plus, any news. Boston doesn't help me
in those areas here in Arizona.

Thanks for the response. Yes, I know about George Noory and Coast to
Coast. I like it but his topics aren't conducive to sleep for me. You
might try WBZ Steve Leveille 12:00 est. He's interesting and funny.

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] Music-Playback now on ANDROID! SqueezePlayer released to the market ...

2012-02-07 Thread bluegaspode

Guernsey Zoo;689185 Wrote:

I like how the SqueezePlayer stops playback when it senses that the
headphones have been disconnected, would it be possible to
automatically start playing again if it senses that headphones have
 been reconnected?

Hi Guernsey Zoo.

It might be possible, but right now the App shuts down after 15minutes
of doing nothing, so I couldn't observe if the headphones are plugged
in (right now).
Also I'm not sure, if that would give unwanted sideeffects for most
people, when the music just started playing again when you just plug in
headphones (because maybe you also do it without being in the car).

If you really want to have such a feature then maybe your life can be
made easier with Apps like:
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.wormskin.headphones
(starts an App when headphones are plugged in)

https://market.android.com/details?id=com.bigbangllc.carkit
(starts an App only when powered + headphones, maybe a better heuristic
for 'in the car again')

At least you could easily start OrangeSqueeze or SqueezePlayer
automatically and your life could be a little bit more convenient.

One more suggestion (and now it might get cool): in the server settings
of a player (web-interface - settings - player - SqueezePlayer -
Audio) one can configure different Power On Resume modes.
One of them is Pause at Power Off, Resume at Power On.
If used correctly, then SqueezePlayer automatically start the last
track played when turned on.

So what does used correctly mean :) ? I tried various things: if I
stop SqueezePlayer via it's own Power Off button (and then start it
again), the music resumes indeed.
It also works, if I force quite the Application and then restart it.
I does NOT work though, when using the On/Off button in OrangeSqueeze
(as this only results in pausing the stream).

Does this help us? Maybe: I just read the documentation of the Tasker
App and it looks like it can also kill an App.
So I'd suggest moving the headphones handling completely into the
Tasker App.
Headphones inserted: start OrangeSqueeze + SqueezePlayer (music will
resume)
Headphones removed: kill SqueezePlayer (will make the server resume
playing on next start).

How does this sound - I guess it's worth a try, isn't it?
Here the Android platform really shows it's strength as Apps from
different authors can cooperate. Not possible on iOS.

I hope this solution can get you pretty close to what you want to
achieve.
At the additional cost of 4.50#8364; for the Tasker App though.

I just realize, that the Tasker App one might even be able to integrate
SqueezePlayer+SqueezeCommander (or even the Logitech App) seamlessly
already today. With the App one could create a simple icon/widget on
the home screen, which just starts both Apps ... wow this gets really
cool the more I read about this App.
Guess I'll play some more with it on the weekend and the there will be
a blog post with my experiences about it.

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] Orange Squeeze 1.0 for Android Released

One more thing I'd like to add to this wonderful controller

The option to play the rest of the album if you select one track. Like,
say I want to listen to the second track when it ends I want it to move
on to track three.

Re: [slim] Android Controller App

All valid comments. However I guess its personal choice, my personal
favorite is still the Logitech Squeezebox controller. In the meantime I
am happy to use the web interface from my tab. All in though I think
most of the third party apps are good and have there pros and cons.
