Re: [slim] Good Squeezebox alternative?

2012-03-14 Thread amey01

Why on earth would you look for an inferior alternative? Squeezebox is a
one of a kind. It is for this reason you even have to ask such a
question in the first place.

It is also for that reason that I think the future is bright. How could
you think otherwise? Simply because they are not into planned
obsolescence and a continual cycle of change-for-the-sake-of-change and
spinning wheels without traction? The system is already nigh on
perfect.

I don't like the fact that development seems non-existent, that the
choice of Squeezeboxmodels is shrinking rapidly.
I think the market wants a Boom II (or a Receiver II / Touch II with
amp), a Receiver II and maybe a Touch II (a working embedded LMS server
without limitations). The Boom II Receiver II are the most obvious
omissions compared to the competition...

Unfortunately synchronization on Android devices is a hit or miss. I
wrote a longer blog post about the difficulties of the platform here:
 http://www.squeezeplayer.com/2011/12/squeezeplayer-and-synchronisation-with-other-squeezeboxes/

What bothers me is that another user already wrote me by mail, that on
his DroidX synchronization works without any problems.

 Really strange.

Sorry it took me so long to respond. It doesn't seem to be a problem
with syncing at all. When I set the droid X by itself, the spotify
songs continue to pop and randomly speed up and slow down.

One sync issue that I just noticed is that the squeeze player does not
accept commands to delay start playing music. The squeeze player
always starts first, now matter the settings. I have set Droid X
settings for: start delay and Audio delay to 1000ms and even set the
Synchronized Players Startup Delay to 1000ms. The player does not
accept those commands. the player always starts immediately before the
rest of the radios.

I can live without the droid X being synced, but hopefully the Spotify
issue can be corrected. I always use that app.

Thank you.

When a player is not synced, it definitely should not speed up or down
or pop. Are you sure you removed it from every sync group?

Unsynced the player will just stream as much data as it has, if there
is a buffer underrun, it will stop the music for a short while to
refill the buffer, much like known from a Squeezebox. This wouldn't
ever result in popping but a very clear short pause? And if it still
speeds up or slows down this rather sounds like a broken soundchip?
Can you please watch the buffer fillrate of SqueezePad on the main
screen, when these things happen?
What numbers do you see there typically?

Are you running stock firmware or a custom modification on your Droid?

And finally the delays: I think you misinterpreted the settings: if you
are setting up a delay, the server thinks that the playback device has
this delay in its audio chain. So it actually delays all other (!)
synced players so that they are still in sync with the one delayed
device. So it would be expected behaviour, if SqueezePlayer starts
before all others if you've set up a delay.

2. Run squeezeslave, any build, adding -dslimproto to your existing

I expect yours to be different.

I'll have further suggestions based on the reported MSG.

I assume the *n/3* are copy/paste errors?

The zones feature has never worked for me either, that's part of the
reason I didn't include it in the last release.

I suspect what's happening is the output device uses a format other
than 16-bits which is correctly assumed by the zones patch as it is the
only format supported by squeezeslave.

I'll need to investigate further to be sure.

Thanks for the reply.I made sure that there was no other sync players.
It was just the droid X, which runs stock firmware.

I reviewed the playback percentage, all non-spotify songs run between
77-80%. When i play a spotify song this changes to about 19-20%.

There is no pause, it just pops and goes at random speeds. If you
would like, i can post a youtube video later today.

Thanks for the info about the delaying the audio. I'll try that later.

Thanks in advance!A possible reason for the problem is that Avast somehow
 uses Flash and
the presence of DSbridge files in the Flash folder confuses it.

If I were you I would just uninstall Avast and try a different AV
program.

Avast may be free, but the latest version is a terrible resource hog. I
have had to remove it from about five PCs around my family circle that I
had installed it on about three years ago (when it was a simpler
program). This is because it was bringing them all to a grinding halt.

Once Avast was removed everything was fine and dandy. So far I have
failed to find a decent light alternative to Avast, but because all
the PCs sit behind NAT router based firewalls and the e-mail is
pre-scanned with AV software at the ISP end before delivery, the risk
of virus infection is negligible. Spyware is taken care of with Windows
Defender, and Thunderbird deals with spam and phishing e-mails pretty
well.

The only time that you are significantly at risk of a virus infection
or hack attack that needs a -software- solution is when you are using a
laptop in a public environment such as a wi-fi hot spot or when you are
collecting your e-mail from a provider that does not pre-scan for
viruses.

I seem to have a simular problem as Castalla. Updated avast (now

 The sympton is the following:
Right after Windows (Vista SP2)and Avast starts, the red icon from
DSBridge shows up, with fault message could not load lame_enc.dll.
(Avast seems to be using both dsound.dll in the Flash folder and
 dsound.dll in system32 folder.)

If I try to start Spotify now another red icon shows up with the fault
message could not bind to port 8124. (Also spotify seems to be using
both dsound.dll in the Flash folder and dsound.dll in system32 folder.)

After reading the thread here I tried to solve the problem by deleting
dsbridge.ini, dsound.dll and lame_enc.dll from the flash folder (only
leaving them in the spotify folder), unfortunately without any good
result I found a strange work around.

If I rename the files (dsbridge.ini, dsound.dll and lame_enc.dll) in
the Flash folder to (dsbridge.iniold, dsound.dllold and
lame_enc.dllold) and then restart windows, Avast starts without
starting DSBridge (No red icon shows up). If I then change the name
back to the original names in the Flash folder and start Spotify -
Spotify and DSBridge works just as it did before the update of Avast
 and I can stream music.

Can anybody explain this? or even better find a way which makes it work
 without all this hassle.

 Thanks in advance!

If it works, why wrangle with it??? Just accept there's some strange
anomaly!

I like Avast especially because it provides web-page protection - had a
few pages containing malware get trapped by Avast.

they are, they could sell PDF copies of the CD booklets. If they were
cheap enough they would sell lots and people would probably not bother
 to pirate them.

I'm satisfied to put most of my cds away in the attic in their jewel
cases after they've been ripped. That saves even more living space
than bagging them. (More accurately, creates more space for vinyl.)
Plus, (a) I don't think most bags fit in my racks and (b) almost none
of the bags hold the back card.

But I'm not sure that I want to be without the inserts, especially for
box sets with deluxe books. And I'm also not sure I want to separate
the cds from their inserts because of the difficulty of reuniting them.

This is presently a conundrum. Thoughts?

Re: [slim] Why not in a car?

2012-03-14 Thread jfalk

2010 GLK (although the same system is in all current Mercedes, I
believe). There is an alternative system which reads CDs and creates
an up to 6GB database using Gracenote tags. This system is, for many
reasons, no good for me.

I'm still looking into the USB system which I thought was not really
navigable on-screen. It's really the same system the IPod uses -- just
with a different connector. But it's how you send commands to the
player that matters

[slim] Tinnitus Notched Music Therapy

2012-03-14 Thread Apesbrain

See:
http://www.google.com/search?q=tinnitus+notched+musicsourceid=ie7rls=com.microsoft:en-us:IE-Addressie=oe=

I tried the following modification in custom-convert.conf:

Code:

flc flc * *
# runs ALL flc through SoX to notch out one designated octave for
tinnitus treatment
# in this example the octave is centered on 5.8k

# FT:{START=--skip=%t}U:{END=--until=%v}D:{RESAMPLE=-r %d}
[flac] -dcs $START$ $END$ -- $FILE$ | [sox] -q -t wav - -t flac -C0
sinc 8.7k-4.35k -

It gives me an error when I try to play a flac file. Any suggestions
on how to make this work? Thanks.

There is no pause, it just pops and goes at random speeds.

I just registered to Spotify and can reproduce the problem.
Once the buffers have filled (for me they pretty fast go up to 99% /
97%) the effect goes away.
So it looks like either the plugin or Spotify are dropping some
frames.

Looking into the Spotify Debug Log I see many error messages so will
contact triode if he can give any insight.

Thanks a lot for pointing out the issue (which luckily can be
reproduced by me as Spotify is finally available in Germany).

 Hi there,

While I got no issues on my ipad, here on Android using Squeezeplay on

The app buffers then plays then buffers then plays.
It does not seem to do both at the same time.
I tried with MP3s and ALAC, same result.
On the front page the numbers in % never are more than 50%.
I'm at home using Wifi N and I don't have a connexion issue here on the

Can someone help me on this nasty issue ?

When the download stream is not fast enough the second buffer will
never fill, as the bytes are consumed much faster than can be
downloaded.
Have you enabled bitrate limiting for the SqueezePlayer player, so that
maybe your QNAP is trying to transcode all the time?

Are you sure you tried with mp3s (as ALACs will definitely get
transcoded which might not be fast enough on QNAP). What about an
internet radio stream (just to test another type of mp3) ?

Hi TheDrizzle,

I searched this forum for the error messages I had in the logs (and
beside others that had trouble with their Duets/Booms without any
solution) found this one:

Essentially it asks to

Can you try disabling the Spotify - Flac option on the advanced
 settings, file types web page?

This will force to stream decoded Spotify tracks as PCM (rather than
tries to convert them to FLAC). This solves the problem for me.

Please give it a try (without trying to sync).
When this works try it with sync again (but be aware, that PCM
streaming will be 2x as much traffic compared to FLAC)

Does anyone know if there an equivalent app for Android OS? I have an HP

Ice Cream Sandwich, and bought SqueezeCommander, but wondering if it's possible
to play music locally on the device.

[slim] Podcast confusion

2012-03-14 Thread Millwood

There appear to be two podcast players, and I don't understand why.

Player 1. configured on the server settings podcast tab. accessed on
the web interface extra menu podcast entry. can't find it on the
controller at all.

Player 2. configured as an app on mysqueezebox.com and accessed in the
app menu on the controller or the web interface. works even when the
player is connected to the server, even though changing
mysqueezebox.com instantly changes the available list in the app.

Please explain.

Note that all old players since a decade back are supported by the

2012-03-14 Thread TheDrizzle

Glad to hear that you guys now have Spotify. I love it.

I disabled FLAC like you said. The pops and random speeds went away,
but this caused another problem. All Radios started to pause and skip
tracks (I did try with the droid X both synced/unsynced and the droid X
off and on.)

The squeeze player reads (19-50%/0%)
