This appears to be more along the lines with giving those (with selected
devices) that use streaming services another option from MySB.com since
MySB will die eventually. For those of us that use SB almost exclusively
to just listen to our own ripped CD's this doesn't appear to offer much.

You might be right if you fulfill all the following criterias:
- Exclusively is interested in using Squeezebox hardware (from Logitech
or third parties like Community Squeeze project)
- Exclusively is interested to play local music
- Exclusively is interested to manage the local music with LMS running
on a computer/NAS
- Are 100% satisfied with how your current Squeezebox system works
- Have no interest in music discovery features outside your local
library (except for what's provided through third party plugins for
LMS)
- Have no interest in social related features and integration with your
friends (except for what's provided through third party plugins for
LMS)
- Is satisfied with the remote control features provided by the existing
Squeezebox remote control apps for smart phone/tablets (or any new apps
you think third party developers will bring to the table in the future)

The current Squeezebox system with LMS for local music is not bad, it's
is and will continue to be very good as long as you fulfill the above
criterias.

I do find it curious that ickstream has chosen to support some SB
devices directly with a future possibility of maybe doing some proxy
method through SB server to support other SB devices. This seems like a
duplication of work, especially when I'd bet that the non directly
supported SB devices would be the majority of the SB audience.

I'm fairly sure the Squeezebox Radio/Touch devices are a lot more
popular than you seem to think they are.

The proxy solution also introduce some extra technical complexity which
results in that it requires more work to implement since it doesn't fit
perfectly with how ickStream is supposed to work.

If there are some third party developers interested to use ickStream
together with older devices, they will probably implement support for
the older devices even if we wouldn't be able to prioritize it
ourselves, this is what an open system is all about.

However, we are hearing what people say and will take it under
consideration, but we can't promise anything at the moment.

My qobuz plugin sometimes reports that an album is unavailable for

I investigated the data, and it's probably just the kind of unclear data
we've seen in the past: sometimes an album would be flagged as streamable,
but the tracks are flagged as _not_ streamable. In this case only 4 tracks
out of the full album are flagged playable. Go figure...

However, we are hearing what people say and will take it under
consideration, but we can't promise anything at the moment.

After first seeing this thread, I did a quick inventory of the SB
devices I have, but then thought not to post. But maybe that was the
wrong decision. Not that a single voice makes a difference except maybe
it'll encourage others (or you ickStream guys can discourage it, if you
think it is not appropriate here).

I have 9 players, all of which were in use at one point (multiple
residences): 1xSB1, 3xSB2, 2xBoom, 1xSB3, 1xDuet, 1xTouch. I was using
the SB1 until about 2 weeks ago, when I swapped it with the Touch
(again, due to the discussion in this thread).

The Duet Controller and the Touch are my least favorite devices of the
bunch, because they operate differently (thanks to their displays). The
Controller screen is just too small: it is much easier to use iPeng
(which I typically use on an iPad mini, sometimes on an iPod Touch or
even an iPhone). The Touch is okay as a desktop player, but across a
room the older hardware is easier to read (IMHO, of course). Even at the
desk, I prefer the IR remote for direct access to functions (I haven't
looked at reconfiguring the Now Playing screen much).

I use Triode's Spotify plugin. I prefer it over the Spotify app (as in
iPad/iPhone/iPod app) just because I can send the music to a set of
speakers with it (i.e. playback on an SB device). AirPlay is more
difficult to work with, although with an Apple TV you can get close: you
are just missing the convenient display that doesn't require picking up
the table to look at iPeng. (Also, I really don't want to turn on a
large screen just for music information display.) My Denon receiver also
has AirPlay, but using it almost always hangs the receiver after the
first disconnect (when it doesn't hang, it insists that it is in use by
another device), so it is best avoided.

I also use Pandora. I initially used it on my computer (with PandaBar),
but I'm happier with it on a Squeezebox. When something grabs my
attention, it is never at the beginning of the song (when the
notification would be on my screen), but with a Squeezebox I can read
the artist and song info any time during the song (without reaching for
another device, either).

I've recently looked at alternatives to Pandora (just in case it stops
working on the LMS; otherwise I love the selections their algorithms
come up with). The Smart Mix plugin based on the Echo Nest has proven
rather nice, especially since it is mixing both my own and Spotify's
library. The advanced interface is busy, but resulting playlists have
been quite good.

I also run mserv (+ icecast) to produce a ratings-based (multi-user)
stream, which can be listened to on Squeezeboxes as well as other
players. This could be implemented as an endless playlist on LMS, as
well, if LMS had ratings for multiple users.

Using ickStream on a Touch should work for the following requirements:

- information display readily available
- mix music from my own library and streaming services

Don't know if ickStream would support the following:

- playback of a private stream (although LMS can do this by itself)
- scrobbling to Last.fm (currently all my sources scrobble when used via
LMS)

Being able to use ickStream in only one location (on only one of my
players) would place hard considerations on its cost. (In comparison,
Spotify and Pandora work everywhere for me.)

As for other hardware, only the Turtle Beach AudioTron comes close to
Squeezebox for convenience on a regular stereo system. I only first
bought SB hardware when the AT was killed.

Of the non-display devices the Apple TV works best for me, but I only
really use it for video. And unfortunately it still doesn't support
apps. The Roku 2XS is slow and the SB app cannot compete with iPeng.
(However, the Plex app is nice.) I don't think the WDTV talks to LMS.
The D-Link BoxeeBox is also dead (and probably didn't have LMS support,
either; at least I didn't have it installed).

I think there are all categories:
- Users who only is interested in local music
- Users who want to own most of their music and have it locally but is
interested to use online streaming services for music discovery and
music they can't justify buying
- Users who mostly is interested in online streaming services but have a
small local library with music which aren't available on the online
streaming service
- Users who only is interested in online streaming services

The first variant is probably not that interested in a cloud based
solution, they have probably already now removed the mysqueezebox.com
settings in their LMS installation (if they have even registered on
mysqueezebox.com) and is already today using LMS as a standalone setup
without any dependencies to internet. I think it will be hard to
convince such users to use a cloud based solution, especially if they
aren't interested in any bells and whistles and is satisfied with their
current Squeezebox setup.

All market trend reports I've seen indicates that physical music sales
is going down and mobile music and streaming services are going up.
I think it can partly be an age thing, I think a lot of people above 40
who already have a big local collection haven't seen the potential and
usefulness of online streaming services yet.

Re: [slim] Community Funded Squeezebox Replacement - Would you be interested?

2013-05-06 Thread JohnSwenson

I have a little more time to add some more detail.

These listening sessions were not used as a squeezebox, I had the DAC
board connected to an existing XMOS based USB input board which was
sending data to my board. I had done a lot of work to try and isolate
things with proper ground plane use etc with the hope that issues such
as USB cables and different power supplies would have little effect.

As far as cables went it worked. We tried different USB cables on other
XMOS input DACs and found significant sonic degradation with some
cables, with the new system, there was very little change with any
cable.

BUT the power supply sensitivity still seemed to be there. Switching
from a Touch supply to one of my good linear supplies made a significant
difference. Still no idea exactly WHY. The switching supply is not BAD,
it still sounds quite good, WAY WAY better than a Touch, but with my
linear supply it went from really really good to WOW!

This is a little disapointing to me, I had been trying to design
something that would work just as well no matter what the PS input.

Re: [slim] Pre-Announcement: ickStream Music Platform

2013-05-06 Thread pippin

I would want to add a bit of perspective regarding the device support.

The question about which devices to start with is really not one about
which devices we want to favor or something like that. Myself, I
regularly use 6 Squeezeboxes (plus a number of iThingies with iPeng as a
player, but all but one of those are mainly really being used as mobile
players and the one exception sitting in a dock currently is my
ickStream player :) And plus some test devices, e.g. a Radio converted
to UE). Of these 6 devices one is a Radio one is a Touch and all others
are ip3k devices (2x Classic, 1x Boom, 1x Transporter),

So for my actual listening, I will need a solution for these old devices
as much as anybody else here and I really hope it will be there. And
soon.

However, ickStream is not just a plugin for LMS to replace MySB, it's a
whole different system and while it comes with moderate effort to
support LMS as a music source and while the Squeezeplay based players
are easy to adapt because they use a powerful and open platform, that's
not true of the ip3k devices. Putting a software on them is not an
option, we don't even have a software toolkit for that (and it would be
prohibitively expensive) plus the memory on these devices is so tight
that adding ickStream inevitably would mean removing some of the
Squeezebox related functionality.

So the only way to get these devices supported is by running them as
Squeezebox devices and making LMS the ickStream Player. This is not
impossible, the UPnP plugin in LMS actually does something very similar,
but it's a bit against our architecture which is why it's simply not the
thing to start with.

One of our basic ideas is to have more independent devices and this
simply fits the new Squeezeboxes better, so they come first.

I am pretty convinced we will have a solution for ip3k devices, too.
Actually I rely on it. But we don't have infinite time and resources so
we have to start with _something_ and there the old players simply are
not step 1 on the to-do-list.
