Re: [slim] Last.fm going?! Doesn't look good for Squeezebox users
What would be cool would be a plugin to be able to play your last.fm loved tracks using other services with some search integration. That's what I hoped would be possible when they mentioned that mixes would still be available through Spotify. But my inquiries so far have gone un-responded :-(. The contacts I had at last.fm seem to have left the company... -- Michael ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

asdti wrote: Me too.:( I have over a year's Last FM subscription pre-paid. At least they say I can claim a refund (we'll have to see how quickly THAT happens...) FWIW - just as an alternative suggestion for ex Last FM subscribers - I still have a Napster/Rhapsody subscription which still has many of the same features, although its a bit dearer. Now if Napster disappeared that really would be the end of Squeezebox for me. I never really understood the appeal of Spotify (I have both but never use it). To me it seems twice the price for less (yes I know stream is better quality but I honestly can't hear the difference and the cover art on Spotify is dreadfully pixelated. By sheer luck, my Last.fm subscription is just about to expire. Sadly, it won't now be renewed. It probably took up the majority of my Squeezebox listening hours as I loved to put a custom station on, based on a favourite artist or a genre. I've got Napster too (wonder how long that will last?) but it really is a different kind of service despite having some areas where functionality is similar (themed radio stations). Clearly, this is all happening because the music industry jacked up the cost of streaming. Well, they really shot themselves in the foot if my own personal music listening is anything to go by as I discovered a lot of new music by first hearing a track/artist through Last.fm .. then added the album to my Napster Library to check out in more detail .. and if I really liked it would buy the mp3 downloads or CD. It was a really well-integrated chain of music discovery and purchase. The fatcats in the record companies seem to want to wipe out as much online streaming as possible - or at least make it as expensive as just buying the music outright for the end user. Utterly short sighted. slimfast's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=29669 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=101226 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

garym wrote: never used last.fm (other than for scrobbling my tracks). Did Last.fm allow you to select and play particular songs or albums, or did it work similar to Pandora (that is, play a mix of songs based on a track or artist, but not be able to play *particular* songs. What I like about Spotify is the ability to play specific songs or albums (mostly for previewing new music I might buy later or for one off playing of things I don't want to own). So that's my basis for liking spotify (mog or rhapsody would allow the same thing too, but I moved from MOG to spotify, because it will work even if they shut down mysb.com). Spotify combined with smartmix plugin makes for a fantastic random play method as well. Services like spotify and napster are about allowing you to build a music library that you stream, with a monthly subscription. They essentially are like 'renting' your music but are a great way to access a lot of music for not a lot of money. Last.fm was all about discovering new music and sharing it with other people who had similar tastes. It used to be that you could build playlists but not control exactly which songs were played but that was dropped quite a while back. What you could do was listen to a custom stream that was tailored around what you normally listen to, or a stream of stuff it reckoned you would like, or a stream built around music similar to that made by a given artist or a specified genre/tag. You could also listen to the streams of your 'friends' on the service. It was absolutely great for getting a selection of music that you were almost sure to like but either didn't have to choose yourself (in the case of the station tailored to your known musical choices) or would never otherwise have heard (for the recommendation or genre stations). slimfast's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=29669 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=101226 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I can see the same thing happening with their Harmony line of remotes which they had recently said they would ditch but have kept going for the time being. Recent product developments have been less than stellar and the system seems to get less flexible all the time with their so-called 'improvements'. Why do they take absolutely brilliant products and mess them up?! Just what sort of people have risen to the top at the company, anyway they once really seemed to be on top of their game but ever since the fiasco of their Google TV box they seem to have embarked on a downward spiral of destruction. slimfast's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=29669 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=101217 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I'm not going to get into a whole post-mortem, but lobotomizing it to UE was far from the first thing of note. The Boom and Duet came out under the Logitech flag, although it seems that those benefited from momentum that started under Slim Devices (and continued while some of the SD team was still with Logitech). Then there's the Touch, which I think is a great product, but with a very mangled development process (including the TinyLMS travesty) and a launch so delayed that you could see Moore's Law played out in real time. IMO, that's when things took a serious downward turn. And continued from there. aubuti's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2074 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=101217 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Last.fm going?! Doesn't look good for Squeezebox users
I've been a subscriber to Last.fm for six years and will really miss it. The best thing about it for me has been the depth of the music they have. I listen to a wide variety of music, and through Last.fm am continually discovering new artists and buying their music, both as mp3's and as CD's. Spotify, Pandora, etc, seem only interested in major labels and don't have a quarter of the artists I've come to really like. Just this month I've really been liking a Finnish big band rap collaboration, but the chances of finding Ricky-Tick Big Band Julkinen Sana, let alone Tsuumi Sound System, Trio Mio, Frigg, Harv and similar groups on any other service are next to nil. And that's just the Scandinavian side of my musical taste! kc5f's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=19652 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=101226 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] Music-Playback now on ANDROID! SqueezePlayer released to the market ...
Hi Blugaspode, Long time no speak, I hope you're well. I have just updated to v1.3.8 of Squeezeplayer, released a few days ago, and have noticed the battery usage has shot up. I don't know for sure if it is down to this app as such as the upgrade coincided with my phone's upgrade to KitKat but SqueezePlayer is now number two on my list of battery hogs (after the Screen) at 19%. Before (and on JellyBean) it was way down the list in the nothing-to-worry-about section (~1% maybe). I must confess that despite this I haven't noticed the phone going flat any quicker. Have you noticed this? Has KitKat changed the battery metric?
