Hi Labarum, I think we met previously on the "AVI" forum?

I have a very little used Raspberry Pi4 4GB, in a Kodi edition Flirc
case doing nothing at the moment. It has the latest v8.1 piCorePlayer
installed. I could easily install LMS and make it ready for you to just
configure your music library etc., no Linux skills needed!

I was going to put it on ebay, should be no difficulty selling this,
unused in box 5v/3A PSU included.

Let me know if you're interested, arrange price, shipping etc..

Crouton is still under active development, but it gets less attention
now that there's partial support for Linux apps in ChromeOS. Setting up
Crouton requires carefully following directions, including switching the
Chromebook to developer mode, which makes it somewhat less secure. It
also completely wipes the Chromebook's storage.

I'm not certain about this, but it may only work on X86 Chromebooks. I
have found that one Chromebook I have uses an Arm processor is not
supported by LMS.

Easy? Probably not, but not impossibly difficult either. Definitely not
plug and play. Practical? Perhaps. I have used LMS on my Chromebook
while traveling. But that Chromebook is now just a laptop running Linux,
after Google's support ended. And that's a much more satisfactory
platform for LMS.

I have used a Chromebook for years and have thought about that from time
to time. I think you would have to switch the Chromebook in Linux mode
and install the Linux LMS. That will be more complicated than a Windows
install. Now the big question: once LMS is running in the background can
you switch back to ChromeOS mode and carry on. I don't know! Perhaps
someone else can answer the question for both of us.

If you want a new platform for LMS you can mess with a Raspberry Pi and
PiCorePlayer.

If you want an out of the box, plug and play option you could take the
PolyVection route

https://polyvection.com/en/

Look at the Core32 "Music Gateway" which is a box with LMS
pre-installed. £175, but hardware is hard to get at the moment.

UK Distributor:

https://www.vortexbox.co.uk/shop?store-page=CORE32-Gateway-Server-p349653864

Plug in a USB drive with your music library and forget - it will look
after itself.

[slim] Can I use a chromebook to run my LMS ?

2022-01-11 Thread bunkertoy

This question I'm sure is somewhere in this forum. I'm not super techy
for doing computer work arounds. I see there are quite a few options for
LMS downloads. which one is best for a chromebook. ?
My PC laptop is not working anymore, hoping to run the LMS of my
chromebook. Hopefully I can save the cost of a new computer to run my
LMS.

If this is a big complicated work around, just tell me up front. Thanks
to the community for any help.

Understood - yet for a long time I ran LMS on my own Windows laptop
without problems.

Indeed it was torture to let them go, but we moved house and they simply
didn't fit

Here are my MB Quart 980s to which I am very attached. One man can lift one,
but only with great difficulty!

In front of the TV is my SB3 and below my other Beresford DAC and a Quad
520f.

The Nicosia house was burgled. They took the TV and the SB3 (goodness knows
what they thought it was) and left the two expensive items - the DAC and the
newly refurbished professional Quad amp. I brought the 520 back to UK and
now use a less expensive 405-2. The Boom in the conservatory they left! Go
figure!

Yes, I understand the desire to move away from your old Windows PC. My
comment was in reference to you suggesting that you might run LMS on
your wife's laptop. That would be asking for trouble if she uses it as a
general purpose machine. Get a RPi (if you can find one in stock

The Meridian M6s that replaced them are surprisingly listenable. Nowhere

The Chromecast Audio Dongle also sounds very fine plugged into the line

It's amazing what can be achieved with what looks like unpromising old

Re: [slim] Updated to DSM to 7 Can no longer access music!!!!

2022-01-11 Thread duff138

I truly appreciate the help. No music yet. Here's a few more screen
shots, to show you what I have done.

I changed the shared name to MUSIC. Should the mount point remain MUSIC
as well.

Also inside the MUSIC folder I had subfolder (2) that is where the FLAC
files are stored. ( not sure if this info helps or not)

That. And I'm not sure whether the "vers=3" is still required. I don't
use it in my pCP/DSM7 setup.

Here's some screen grabs. I updated pCP yesterday while trying to get
things to work. I am attempting to mount using NFS ( at least I think I
am)

Thanks. No stock anywhere. (Well the evil empire has a few 4Gb at
£100!)

I'll wait!

There seems to be a national shortage at the moment. I have asked PiHut
to email me when they have stock.

I don't remember any problems years ago, but I have had some issues
after my recent re-installation. That may be down to the age of my PC,
but also because I have been experimenting, and have broken the rule "If
it ain't broke, don't fix it."

To all I say: Thanks for your advice and interest.

If you click on a device >More Info >Buy Now

it gives a list of Approved Resellers

Well I have already said I'm not in a rush: the Quad amplification is
classic stuff and will probably outlast me, but the Beresford 7510 is
approaching 20 years old. It has had a replacement power supply, but
sooner or later it will fail. It is not a top notch DAC by current
standards, but it is good enough for my purposes. But then you say

Well I have already said I hardly use the Windows Desktop anymore, but
it is using more electricity than a Pi would use to run LMS better. I
don't even have a monitor attached to the PC anymore and have to Remote
Desktop in. If it decides to upgrade or otherwise get itself into a
Windows frenzy, Remote Desktop stops working and I haven't a clue what's
going on. It's 15 years old and, and even though it has a recent SSD,
it struggles with Windows 10 in its latest upgrade - time to be rid.

And you got rid of the big ATCs - buckets of tears. In my Nicosia house
I have the flagship MB Quart towers (no longer made) - it will be a sad
day when they have to go.
