Setting up Crouton requires carefully following directions, including switching the Chromebook to developer mode, which makes it somewhat less secure. It also completely wipes the Chromebook's storage. I'm not certain about this, but it may only work on X86 Chromebooks. I have found that one Chromebook I have uses an Arm processor is not supported by LMS. Easy? Probably not, but not impossibly difficult either. Definitely not plug and play. Practical? Perhaps. I have used LMS on my Chromebook while traveling. But that Chromebook is now just a laptop running Linux, after Google's support ended. And that's a much more satisfactory platform for LMS. I think you would have to switch the Chromebook in Linux mode and install the Linux LMS. That will be more complicated than a Windows install. Now the big question: once LMS is running in the background can you switch back to ChromeOS mode and carry on. I don't know! Perhaps someone else can answer the question for both of us. If you want a new platform for LMS you can mess with a Raspberry Pi and PiCorePlayer. If you want an out of the box, plug and play option you could take the PolyVection route https://polyvection.com/en/ Look at the Core32 "Music Gateway" which is a box with LMS pre-installed. £175, but hardware is hard to get at the moment. UK Distributor: https://www.vortexbox.co.uk/shop?store-page=CORE32-Gateway-Server-p349653864 Plug in a USB drive with your music library and forget - it will look after itself. I don't remember any problems years ago, but I have had some issues after my recent re-installation. That may be down to the age of my PC, but also because I have been experimenting, and have broken the rule "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." To all I say: Thanks for your advice and interest. Well I have already said I'm not in a rush: the Quad amplification is classic stuff and will probably outlast me, but the Beresford 7510 is approaching 20 years old. It has had a replacement power supply, but sooner or later it will fail. It is not a top notch DAC by current standards, but it is good enough for my purposes. But then you say > Regarding moving the LMS server, I would strongly recommend not running > it on a Windows machine that's also being used for other general purpose > stuff. Well I have already said I hardly use the Windows Desktop anymore, but it is using more electricity than a Pi would use to run LMS better. I don't even have a monitor attached to the PC anymore and have to Remote Desktop in. If it decides to upgrade or otherwise get itself into a Windows frenzy, Remote Desktop stops working and I haven't a clue what's going on. It's 15 years old and, and even though it has a recent SSD, it struggles with Windows 10 in its latest upgrade - time to be rid. And you got rid of the big ATCs - buckets of tears. In my Nicosia house I have the flagship MB Quart towers (no longer made) - it will be a sad day when they have to go.
