Re: [slim] File Type settings in Slimserver 6.4

2010-06-21 Thread Phil Leigh

6.4!

Your 24/96 material will be being converted to MP3 for playback (from
memory - it's a long time ago...) either that or it will be being
decimated by dropping alternate samples down to 24/48...

Any reason not to upgrade? (to 7.5.1)

On recent (7.5) the default file settings are best for sound quality
and network usage...

Do the FLAC settings, as presently checked per attached picture, allow
for conversion at the server or done via my SB3?

Sonics...yes on hi-rez (24/48) as explained - 7.5 is better than 6.x

The file settings you have send FLAC from PC to SB as FLAC and then
convert to PCM on the SB. There is nothing wrong with this and is in
fact the best way to optimise performance and network bandwidth.

Except for your hi-rez files...

Re: [slim] Transporter Bitrate Question

2010-06-16 Thread Phil Leigh

Can we start again?
You had 2 questions:

1) Why is the bitrate reported as lower than you think it should be -
answer: by default FLAC is used as the streaming transport protocol to
the player and that needs less bits than wav/pcm. It is still perfect
fidelity. Forget about it.

2) Why does Replaygain information show up on the screen? - answer: the
files you are playing have replaygain tags associated with them. They
were put there by iTunes. If you have the adjust volume options
turned off (settings - player - audio) they do nothing at all.

Yes - the normal level is a parameter within Foobar and has nothing

OK, here's the scenario. I have imported a CD into i-Tunes in .WAV file
format. I have no volume leveling features enabled within i-Tunes and
the final Bitrate on all songs is listed as 1411kbps within the i-Tunes
 window.

I have my Squeezebox Server setup to use i-Tunes. When I play one of
the songs within the Squeezebox Web Console and look at the Song Info
while it's playing I see the following info listed below:

Bitrate: 1411kbps CBR (Converted to 705.6kbps ABR)

Who can tell me the reason why the song appears to be down converted
while playing? Is this a product of i-Tunes over stating the actual
Bitrate to 1411kbps and the True Bitrate is actually 705.6kbps?

Also, on some songs I see a combination of the info listed above as
well as this info below regarding the Volume:

Volume Adjustment: -5.49 dB (this value fluctuates up or down with the
highest value observed so far as being -11.xx db)

Is this Volume Adjustment a product of the recording studio or
something that the Transporter is doing?

I have the Transporter hard set to %100 volume at all times within the
Audio Settings page. My fear is that I am losing Dynamic Range and
sound quality as a result of this Bitrate Volume adjustment
 behavior.

Is there a way to avoid this from happening? Would keeping all music in
the Transporters native .flac format prevent this behavior? I'm
wondering if by having these songs in .WAV format and forcing the
Transporter to use some other, none native codec it is causing me to
miss out on all the Bits I'm entitled to hear.

Thanks for any info you can provide

1) ignore the ABR bitrate figure - it is completely meaningless. Nothng
is being downconverted.

2) you must have the iTunes volume levelling set, as that is the ONLY
way that volume meta tags can be added to your files. SBS reacts to
these tags. You can turn this behaviour OFF at play time via the
Settings - Player - Audio ... volume adjustment in the Web UI.

Using FLAC and avoiding iTunes would be a big step in the right
direction to perational happiness :-) - however, from a pure audio
quality perspective there should be no difference.

I'd suggest the Touch Plus which would be a full (or half) rack width
device with a WIDER (and more legible screen), high quality DAC, better
analog output section, and both RCA and balanced outputs. Price it
below the Transporter (say $600-700), and it will beat the pants off
the Olive, Meridian/Sooloos, and other (forthcoming) streaming devices
 in that market segment.

erm... the analogue output section of the Touch is already very
good...

I'd still like to see a 2-part Touch with detachable screen and wi-fi
(to use as a controller) - and larger screen of course... keep all of
the audio in the docking/charging station + twice as much CPU and RAM
as the current model

 identical tag structures.

These are the tags for the two albums as viewed in Media Monkey:

 http://www.jimwillsher.co.uk/Temp/Album1MediaMonkey.jpg
 http://www.jimwillsher.co.uk/Temp/Album2MediaMonkey.jpg

And this is how they show up in SC:

 http://www.jimwillsher.co.uk/Temp/Album1SC.jpg
 http://www.jimwillsher.co.uk/Temp/Album2SC.jpg

I cannot see how Album1 is being correctly tagged as a compilation but
Album2 is not. Both albums are purely FLAC files.

Is there any guidance on the appropriate tags or MySql entries to
 diagniose this?

 Many thanks,

 Jim

your flac files on the incorrect album may have id3Vx tags as well as
flac tags...
drill right down into one of the tracks in the web UI and view tags
to see if you can see anything there...

Re: [slim] SB vs. server decoding and other conundrums...

2010-05-03 Thread Phil Leigh

pipetman;543049 Wrote:
Just got my SB Touch (and love it) and was excited to play some hi-res
files through it. Like many others I experienced some stuttering when
beginning to play 24/96 flac files and looking into the issue I came up
scratching my head about a few things:

 - By default flac files are decoded by the SB. Apparently that can be
changed via the file type settings in the server configuration page.
But those options leave me a bit confused (and I couldn't come up with
a wiki page explaining those). Under FLAC the following is set:

 FLAC - Native (Native/Disabled)
 MP3 - Disabled (field greyed-out)
 PCM - flac (flac/Disabled)

So, I'm not sure what the different fields are for and what kind of
effect I would see when selecting Disabled. And how do I turn on
 server-side decoding via this dialog?

 - I also played some 24/192 files. What happens to those, as the Touch
only plays 24/96 natively? Are they downsampled to 24/96 or to 16/44.1?
Is there any way to check what bit-depth/sample rate is actually playing
 through the Touch?

 Thanks!
It's simple...and complicated.

By default, FLAC is sent as FLAC to the Touch and decoded there -
that's the FLAC/Native entry
If you set FLAC/Disabled then one of the other entries will be used
(MP3 or PCM) If PCM is enabled that will be used (FLAC converted to PCM
on the server and sent as PCM to the Touch). If PCM and FLAC are both
disabled, FLAC is converted to MP3 via LAME (which needs to be
installed specially - that's why it's greyed-out on your setup at the
moment).
If all 3 are disabled nothing will play!

If you play a 24/192 flac, it is converted via SOX on the server to
24/96 flac (176.4 is converted to 88.2) - you can't change this
directly via Settings, it requires editing of the custom-convert.conf
file.

Is it allowed to cause audio hick-ups if a user press play ?
Should it be allowed to add a complete genre, album or artist or should
it only allow adding single random tracks ?
Or shouldn't it be possible to modify the current playlist at all ?

I suspect the problem with this is that it's going to affect the core
code which makes it more or less impossible to do with a plugin. One
thing that I think would be possible to do as a plugin is a undo
playlist change functionality that makes it possible to restore a
previous playlist. However, I'm not really sure if this would be good
enough on a party, to me it feels like you want to catch it before it
has actually has modified the playlist.

One thing that might be possible is to re-define the play command so
it performs add instead, but I'm not sure if that will make it too
problematic to use the device ? I'm guessing you probably want it to
execute play if the user selects a playlist but add if he selects a
 track ?

Could we have a very simple play as next track or add to end of
current playlist type party interface?

Re: [slim] Gapless playback with FLAC

2010-04-18 Thread Phil Leigh

The vast majority of CD's don't need gapless playback anyway, since they
have some seconds of dead time between the tracks.
Anyway, I have many (400) live albums that would give an extremely
noticeable transition if FLAC playback was truly NOT gapless...and it
is.
So your problem - if there is one - is not in the SB hardware or
software per se...

My situation is this: I have an SB Duet in one room and an SB Radio in

 coming out of both.

The problem I have is with the volume syncronisation settings. No
matter how I change the settings I am left with the same ludicrous
situation: *the volume knob on the SB Radio changes the volume of the
SB Duet, but not the SB Radio itself*. Currently, I cannot change the
volume output of the SB Radio at all.

The situation I want is that the volume of the SB Duet is controlled by
the controller, and the volume of the SB Radio is controlled by the know
on the SB Radio. I do not need them to have their volume syncronised in
 any way.

Can anyone tell me how the settings should be to achieve this? If so,
 many thanks in advance.

Do you have any plugins installed? - like volumelock maybe?

I was hoping that what needs to be done is to switch on the appropriate
debug logging. What I'm unclear about is how that is done. Do I just do
it via the Squeezecenter web interface (Settings Advanced Logging)?
And if so, which ones would people suggest might be worth switching on?
Does Squeezecenter need to be restarted after changing a log level?

Mind you, they are all set to error anyway, and presumably a segfault
is at least an error - but I see nothing in the logs corresponding to
the times of the segfaults. My guess is that the segfault just kills
the process, and it never gets a chance to write a log entry.

It's obvious from dmesg that whatever is crashing has a different
process ID each time. Anyone here know what daily procedures
Squeezecenter performs that it does by forking? That would at least
 narrow it down.
I think you are going to have to bite the bullet and set debugging
level to DEBUG - very verbose, but it will trap things happening at the
same time as your seg fault. I'd start with the server and scanner
set...

which I have dismantled. How do I completely wipe all of my personal
data from both SB3s? Can this be done without the server software
 connected?

 Thanks...g

yes - just do a factory reset on each box

Presumably because accurate sync requires buffering (from a LAN server)

Works fine for me - I've been running it since it came out -
completely stable, no crashes, scan/rescan is lightening quick.

Re: [slim] Is it possible? PC Albumplayer (a windows media player) direct to Squeezebox

2010-03-12 Thread Phil Leigh

west_sounds;524380 Wrote:
ive been playing with the squeeze centre all night and i have really
come to the conclusion now that it is terrible. I gave it a few days
just to make sure i wasn’t being unfair but the SB software is
absolutely dismal. the hardware is first class probably the best out
there but it is horribly let down with its software. even playing with
the moose interface is awful. its just slow and clunky to use. they have
a great product here which could be so much better its a shame.

there is no way i could live with that software I have just uninstalled
the lot, squeezecentre, squeezeplay and moose. as good as the hardware
is because of the software it is not for me, I will wait for an
alternative. The way technology is moving on I shouldn’t have to wait
 too long.

Hopefully some of the software writers will get something sorted for it
 soon.

I know its may be personal preference and I even considered getting rid
of Albumplayer if the software was OK but there really is no contest.

Out of curiousity I downloaded the demo version of AlbumPlayer - here
are my initial impressions (which are obviously skewed by the fact I am
not familiar with the software!)

1) took 45 minutes+ to scan in my 32k Track database + about 15 more
minutes to finish off gathering the artwork from my cover.jpg files - so
about half the speed of 7.5Embedded on the same machine. CPU was pretty
50% pegged during this time (single core machine).

2) No handling of multi-disc sets

3) search/filter function works on songs or artist or album titles -
but not across all 3 at once. However, it does use progresive keystroke
matching (like MusicIP). Partially because of the progressive matching,
the searching is extremely quick - a few milliseconds after your last
keystroke, compared to about a second on SBS

4) No integration with MIP that I could yet find (?)

5) the browse lists are horrible - well, the lists are OK but the
scrolling gives me a headache as it jerks around - it's hard to explain
in words what it does but I don't like it.
6) The app has a slightly Windows Media Player ish feel to it
7) the inbuilt tag editing is... dangerous
8) The artist browse supports artist artwork, which is nice, although
I don't want to be reminded what a lot of 60's rock bands actually
looked like :-)

All in all, it looks like a nice app if you like the Windows highly
graphical approach. It is quick (but does anyone really need that speed?
- I like to relax when listening to music...)

Of course, the lack of MIP, multi-room sync, dependency on a Windows PC
etc make it a rather different
sort of application.

Just thought I'd offer an alternate view...
Phil

hardware remotes (IR, Controller, iPhone, iTouch, Nokia, etc…).

I do understand your desire for web UI usage for all playback control,
many would agree with you and do so themselves. It’s just not what I
and the typical SB user desire for playback usage.

SBS will never win any UI design competitions as this is not the focus

 players is beautiful! :)

All good points - I keep forgetting I'm in the 1% that uses the WEB UI

Albumplayer does include ASIO support which bypasses the normal audio

As much as I think the SB is a great product and the hardware is
probably the best out there at the moment value for money wise, the

I don't know about awkwardish as that's clearly a personal

sub-second to play an album...

Yeah I totally disagree with that statement! - Whilst the V-DAC is for
sure a good DAC, using the USB port of any computer is NOT going to give
the absolute best possible quality. Using wireless or ethernet to
interconnect computer with DAC is preferable - no noise/ground loops!
(and I don't mean mains hum...).

However, of course, you may not notice and that's fine. I just couldn't
let a statement like that pass unchallenged :-)

sent a digital signal via the optical output to a dac. Its either a 0 or
a 1. Its the analog conversion that gives the characteristics of the
 sound coming out the speakers.

Let's put it this way - the zeroes and ones are supposed to be the easy
bit - it's everything else that is hard... (and it's got nothing to do
with wirelessly or not).

Getting Windows to produce bit-perfect streams is an art in itself.

I don't understand - if you care about sound quality, just get a
Squeezebox and run Squeezebox server on your laptop(s). Don't futz
around with Windows audio at all.

If you want a GUI that looks like AlbumPlayer, use Moose.

The Squeezebox solution is hardware AND software used together. not
just hardware.

thurstongarden;520141 Wrote:
 Thanks for the replies.

The fridge is brand new and belongs to the landlord. I imagine it is on
the same electrical circuit as my amp etc in the same room.

It's a 240v system (in the UK) and I cannot really alter it as it's not
mine. I am hoping only to rent for 12 months and thought I could get
something to plug between the fridge and the wall outlet to suppress the
 spike?

If it's radio then I might have to encase the fridge in swathes of
 aluminium foil

OK - STOP!

The pop is caused by faulty suppression capacitor (normally a
Y-Capacitor) on the compressor in the fridge itself. This is a
specialised item. The lack of a working capacitor causes an RFI spike
which is airborne and not carried by the mains wiring, hence a mains
supressor on your hi-fi won't stop it.
The fridge is faulty (even if it is brand new) and you should tell your
landlord, as the compressor needs to have a working capacitor by UK law
(Wireless Telegraphy act I think) to prevent interference with TV and
Radio signals.

There is also an outside possibility that the earth wiring may not be
to standard...

If it was me for my own peace of mind I'd get one of those plug in
mains testers (that look like a 3-pin plug with lights on the back) and
make sure the earth tests ok - if it doesn't, escalate to Landlord
immediately. If the earth is OK, then tell Landlord that there is a
problem with the fridge.

Either way, you need to get your landlord to do something.
