Not quite an answer to the questions posed, but I would find the ability to 'partition' the library into discrete subsets very helpful. Something like the existing 'Switch Library', but without having to switch server. I think some other commenters may also have alluded to same.

As far as I can see, -Audio::Scan- does not appear to be handling the "extended header" properly in an ID3 v2.4 tag. The structure/meaning changes somewhat compared with the ID3 v2.3 tag. The example file does have an "extended header". More that I do not know. It will take some detailed

Thank you @bpa and @bvrulez. I have just installed mp3fs on my Debian box. It has produced mp3 files, tagged with ID3 v2.4 and containing that CRC+extended header that Audio::Scan will choke on. So I can now produce test sample files at will. It's a clever idea (mp3fs).
