Re: [slim] Is it time to abandon my Squeezebox Classics?
While I still run a Classic also. Most of my streamers are now Raspberry Pi based. Pick your poison, zero or full sized and had a DAC Hat and install Picoreplayer. Now you are completely up to date with 2019 sound quality. Myself, I have switched to Roon after 10 plus years of Squeezebox Server. Roon does a good job of using existing Squeezebox players (e.g. squeezelite, etc.). I have my Classic directly hooked up to the cloud since I mainly using it for internet radio streaming. I continue to be amazed at how much the original Squeezebox architects got right (Mark). I wish Logitech could have continued to develop the product along the lines of Roon? ctbarker32's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2816 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=110260 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

castalla wrote: > Plex is NO substitute for LMSBut, it can be nice complement. I am a 10 year > Plus LMS user. But I am also a Plex user primarily for my Video recordings. Things that Plex does for your Music collection that LMS doesn't: 1. Puts your entire music and video collection online accessible with cellphone, anywhere on the planet etc. 2. Provides a much more modern UI into your music and video collection than LMS. 3. Ability to share your collection with Friends and Family. Plex doesn't integrate directly with Squeezebox clients so you can't control them from a Plex. There are headless Plex RPi clients so theoretically you could do a LMS type system but I haven't tried this. With newer NAS devices like the fantastic Qnap 251+, which has transcoding features for Plex and can run LMS as a "Docker Container", there is no downside to running both on the same machine and enjoy the benefits. It Plex could incorporate the LMS protocol then Plex might move ahead. I'm not sure there is much interest in that on the Plex side. Re: [slim] Latest Plex updates Music features
I would like to agree with the OP. The LMS web interface is usable but hopelessly outdated. I use Plex and LMS. I have been using LMS for more than 10 years and have three servers running both for safety and redundancy. I recently tried to get a fellow audiophile to use LMS and Picoreplayer and he was very turned off by the outdated LMS interface and perceived complexity in setting up LMS. I mentioned Ipeng, etc. but he was already fed up. He much prefers the MPD based players using RPi and really likes RUNE Audio (not Roon) which is by default able to connect directly to his SMB (Samba) based NAS share. So with RUNE Audio he downloads the image and burns to a microSD and plugs it into his RPi and he points it towards his SMB NAS share and he is done. LMS can't compete with this scenario! He says it can scan 1 tb of music in 5 minutes which if true is much faster than LMS. It take LMS close to an hour to scan my 2.5 tb music collection. I am very active using Picoreplayer project as well as my existing Touch and SB3 players but I am very concerned for the fate of LMS if no way can be found to bring it's technology and interface up to modern standards? -CB ctbarker32's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2816 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=103565 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Latest Plex updates Music features
I'm a big fan and user of Plex which I use to manage all my Videos that I play to various computers and Roku devices around the house. While I am a long time Squeezebox user and love its flexibility and community resources, I also feel it is dropping further and further behind in the web interface due to it being in maintenance mode only. If Logitech was still active in developing the product one could hope that new HTML5 web interfaces would eventually be developed? Is there any hope that the Squeezebox web interface will ever be modernized? Maybe there would be more hope for a squeezelite plugin being developed for Plex? 'Plex Music Goes to Eleven!' [slim] Amazon Echo - Squeezebox
Hi, I guess many of you have heard a bit about the Amazon Echo. I've got one on order but it won't be here for a while. 17439 From what I read, it is a decent but not audiophile audio player. It supports bluetooth. Of course it has me thinking about how this could become a member of the Squeezebox universe? At $99 for Prime customers it is fairly cheap. I can connect my phone via bluetooth to the Echo and run a Squeezebox client on my phone to play music but it would be really cool if Squeezelite could run natively on the Echo and eliminate bluetooth. I guess many will scoff at the idea but I find it intriguing? One can already run Squeezelite on the Fire TV stick so maybe there's hope? [slim] LMS in the Cloud?
I have recently uploaded my entire music collection which clocks in about 2 Tb to Onedrive. If you are an Office 365 subscriber you get unlimited One drive storage. Supposedly, Windows 10 will recognize FLAC as a music format natively and also Microsoft will be supporting using Onedrive as you Music storage option kind of like online storage companies encourage you upload your cell phone pics to the cloud. I was wondering if LMS could ever become a cloud based service where it could be configured to access music collections on services such as Onedrive? I know many are moving to streaming services like Tidal but my musical tastes are so unique that still feel the need to maintain my own collection. I also use Plex and can access my video collection anywhere with it's cloud services. [slim] Squeezebox 2015 - Is the Squeezebox Universe Expanding of Shrinking?
Hi, I thought I would pose a question to the community to generate some discussion about the future of the Squeezebox product we love. I have personally been using the Squeezebox products and server for about 10 years and it's been a rewarding (sometimes frustrating) ride. I still have my original SB3's and all the squeezeboxs (sans the Transporter) through to the Touch. I am now having great fun experimenting with Raspberry Pi based clients courtesy of Picoreplayer and Squeezeplug. My personal LMS server holds over 6,000 albums across several terabytes of storage. So, my question for 2015 - Is the Universe of LMS and Squeezebox expanding, contracting, or staying about the same? On the expanding side, I am very encouraged by the development of products like Squeezelite that empowers Picoreplayer and Squeezeplug to harness the power of the incredibly malleable Raspberry Pi platform. I think this is an incredible breakthrough and breathes new life into the platform. I am also encouraged at the introduction of services such as Tidal and ability for Squeezebox to access via the ickstream plugin. I am also happy that we can experiment with DSD files using the plugin introduced for LMS. On the contracting side, while USB DAC PC Audio is all the rage it is almost always implemented using some form of host personal computer hooked up to a DAC. I never see anyone utilizing Squeezebox based clients using LMS to accomplish the same thing in a more distributed network environment. Can we as a community do more to publicize the LMS platform? I am also discouraged that pretty much all of the proprietary music server systems seem to use DLNA type technology that we all know doesn't hold a candle to the performance and features of LMS. This, despite many of these systems being no more than customized Linux computers. Is there any reason other manufacturers cannot implement LMS/Squeezebox support into their own products the way open source applications already do? Every time I see a new proprietary music server solution (usually at a high cost) I feel it is always reinventing the wheel and solving problems that have already been solved by LMS? I continue to marvel at the amazing system that Sean Adams and his team created with great foresight that has allowed the Squeezebox ecosystem to continue to live on despite some pretty severe setbacks. I believe that the future remains bright and hope that over time the community will coalesce around solutions that bring great innovation to this platform. -CB ctbarker32's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2816 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=102809 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Meridian MQA - Breakthrough? LMS possible?
From my further reading, I think it is incorrect to describe MQA as a lossy format as is currently understood e.g. MP3 vs FLAC/ALAC. It would appear that MQA is as much to do about audio timing information as it is about frequency information? I'm thinking along the lines of Time Aligned Speakers? The encoding process seems to mimic the way 20 bit Metadata is embedded in HDCD CDs and is then turned on via HDCD aware DACs. Thus the ability to use existing containers FLAC, PCM, etc. Meridian has already announced an MQA aware DAC - The Meridian Explorer 2 DAC. ctbarker32's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2816 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=102648 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

[slim] art problem - ghost cover.jpg's
Hi, Running 7.1, multiple SB3s and new Duet. Linux sever, over 1 terabyte of mostly FLAC rips. I know the album art issue is long running but it can be pretty frustrating. I have settled on using Album Art.jpg as my art name for each directory not embedded for each album. I need the Album Art.jpg to maintain compatibility when I transcode to portable media, etc. I used to use cover.jpg or folder.jpg. I have entered Album Art.jpg into the server web gui. This works well for new albums added. For existing, albums that once were cover.jpg but are now changed to Album Art.jpg, SC 7.1 still points to cover.jpg (the file is not there)! I have done a full wipe and rescan. I have manually done a delete of the folders in the Artwork Cache and nothing works! It still points to artwork that is no longer there. How do I fix this? Re: [slim] 7.1.1 completely hosed my Clarkconnect
Okay. Saw more messages and finally uninstalled and had to blow away the /var/squeezecenter directory. Reinstalled 7.1.1. nd it seems to be building my music library. This update is not ready for primetime on linux at least. [slim] Hard drive failures
Hi, Very happy SB3 times 3 user here. I have been running for about 3 years with a Linux shoe-box server and multiple usb drives with over a terabyte of storage. I use Clarkconnect linux. About 3,000 albums in mostly FLAC format. This weekend I suffered my third hard drive failure in three years. I've been using the Western Digital Essential usb external drives of late for ease of swapping out when they fail which seems to be about once year! I do have a backup to DVDs (about 100 per drive) which I am already restoring to a new drive. Still, this is time consuming and frustrating. I know many people have different strategies for dealing with this but for those of us with large collections it is very troubling. As long as we have to depend on spinning disks it would seem we are doomed to this sort of thing. I hold out hope that solid state storage may one day bring a new level of reliability to this situation but it may be a ways off in terms of cost effectiveness, etc. At least drives are cheap. I bought a 500 gb external replacement drive for $89 last night. I note that I can extend the warranty from 1 to 3 years for $25 through Western Digital. Usually, I don't pay for such things but I wonder if it would be prudent given my experience? Thoughts? -CB -- ctbarker32 ctbarker32's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2816 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=50299 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Feature Request - Auto Playlist with latest Podcasts
Hi, I had an idea today that I would love to have added to the Squeezecenter feature set. I love to listen to my favorite Podcasts on my SB3. Sometimes I like to setup a playlist on the fly that lines up all of the latest Podcasts I subscribe to and then sit back and let the SB3 play them in order. Basically, my own personal radio news program. Right now this is all a manual process. I can't see anyway to tell Squeezecenter to automatically play the latest Podcast from a defined set of Podcast feeds? It seems that most of the components for this are there but the automation part is missing. Adding some kind of scripting component to Squeezecenter might be the ticket. Maybe a plugin could do this? Thanks for the consideration. -CB -- ctbarker32 ctbarker32's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2816 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=46711 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Hi, I found this discussion and would also like to add my vote to have KEXP uncompressed support added to future Slimdevices if possible or existing SB3, etc. I have a Fios 15/2 feed so bandwidth is not an issue. I've installed it on the previous beta and it seemed to run fine. I didn't do much testing. I have re-purposed that particular machine so I can't add any other details. -CB -- ctbarker32 ctbarker32's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2816 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=34622 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Re: Size limit of Playlist?
With further research, I found that when I tried to play my long playlist from the SB3 interface that it plays but complains about the file and lists it is playing 1 of 932 entries. So for the moment, I need to keep the list to less than 932 entries. Seems like an odd limitation. What I'm trying to do is export a song list from WMP10 of all songs that are in the ECM label. Unfortunately, Slimserver uses the lowest common denominator of tagging that is MP3. I use WMA files which have a richer tag fields. I like to play music by recording label. It would be great if I could access this information directly from the slimserver db but it is not available. -CB -- ctbarker32 ctbarker32's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2816 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=19220 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Could be... you might be the first person to excercise the features as you have. I suggest filing your bugs at bugs.slimdevices.com and I'm sure theywill be addressed soon. I'm a little surprised you say I am the first person saving playlists using the web interface. I would have thought that this was used a lot? Anyway, I am new here so I thought I would bounce these things off the community before I started filing a lot of bug reports. [slim] Re: Native AAC Support
Hi, Just wanted to comment on your post about using a $1000 NAS box as a dedicated Slimserver. In my experience, you don't need to spend anywhere near that amount. I'm a brand new SB3 owner and I just built a brand new Slimserver linux box for well under $300. I bought from Newegg a shoebox system that included a case preinstalled with motherboard and included a free Athlon Sempron 2600 for $230. All I had to add was a hard disk, memory, and CD/DVD player/recorder. I happened to have bought a Maxtor 200 gb drive during the Christmas rush for $29. I also had 512mb of memory lying around. Also, I had a spare DVD drive. This went together very easily and quickly. I poked around here and discovered that the free ClarkConnect Home linux server software was a good bet for running Slimserver. A big bonus was that Clarkconnect was setup to run headless from the start so I don't have to have a keyboard/mouse/monitor hooked up once I got things setup. It really came together very simply and easily. Slimserver is running great. Once I set things up, I moved the server near my router in my utility room and powered it up. Everything works great. I installed some unix utilities of scp and putty to allow me direct access to the server from my WinXP box. ClarkConnect sets up default SMB shares that are easily accessed from Windows. I copied over all my WMA and FLAC files and pointed WMP 10 to a mapped SMB share on the ClarkConnect box and I rip new CDs directly to the server. This really was pretty straight forward. -CB -- ctbarker32 ctbarker32's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2816 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=19155 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Playlist disappear because of missing #EXTM3U
Hi, New Squeezebox and Slimserver user here. I've done pretty well getting my music server running on a dedicated ClarkConnect box. I am having problems with Playlists not working or disappearing from my Slimserver. I am running: SlimServer Version: 6.2.1 - 5194 - Linux - EN - utf8 I have discovered that if I create a playlist using the slimserver web interface and save the new playlist that it is deleted when a rescan playlists is done. I discovered that if I download the playlist using the download link for the current playlist and open in a text editor that the file only lists the songs for the current playlist but doesn't have the header entry EXTM3U at the beginning of the file. If I add this missing header and save the file directly to my designated playlist directory, the file will be accepted and survives a playlist scan by the server. It would seem the playlist feature is a bit buggy? Thanks. -CB -- ctbarker32 ctbarker32's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2816 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=19219 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Size limit of Playlist?
I have been creating some custom playlists. I created one with over 1250 entries. This crashed Slimserver 6.2.1 running on Linux. I edited the playlist down to about 970 entries and this worked and did not crash the server. I am finding playlists very problem prone. Is there an extensive document that outlines what can and cannot be done with playlists. Thanks. -CB -- ctbarker32 ctbarker32's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2816 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=19220 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
