[slim] Europa Radio Jazz

2020-06-22 Thread netchord

this is a station i used to listen to a lot via Roon. it stopped being
playable awhile ago, and i can't get the stream to work via LMS either.

neither stream on this page will play via LMS, but it plays in desktop
software:

yeah, not sure if spotify connect supports syncing. however, ropieeeXL
also supports airplay, which does.

but as someone else has noted, two sonos ones is probably the simplest,
cheapest way to do this, and integrate local and online libraries.

bumping this. after moving to a RPi running pCP, i'm still having this
issue, so seems clear it's an LMS problem (happened on both 7.9.2 and

[slim] Weird Playlist behavior

2020-05-29 Thread netchord

i'm experiencing some odd behavior with playlist, where clicking play
*always* results in most tracks being skipped, and the final, or
penultimate track is played, and playback continues from there. shuffle
is not enabled.

If tracks are in queue: click play for a playlist and queue is replaced,
but playback begins per above
if no tracks are in queue, playlist is loaded, and playback begins per
above

workaround: clear queue, add playlist to blank queue, click play for
first track, and playback continues for entire playlist/queue.

is this expected behavior?

that's for the desktop application, not the LMS plugin.

i'm actually a little surprised, since i thought the SB would just see a
24/48 FLAC container and pass it along via the digital out.

which player and output are you using? i wonder if there's a setting
amiss in File Types?

i've been listening to the MQA files via my transporter, not decoded of
course, but to my ears they sound superior to the same album in non MQA
format. the non-MQA Tidal files are 16/44, these should be 24/48.

AVR= Automatic Voice Recognition & TTS = Text To Speech.

most car based implementations rely on Nuance, and there's some music
centric DNA in the nuance system that i'm familiar with. it could still
get better of course.

Alexa (Amazon) rolled their own, likewise Siri and Cortana.

for weird pronunciations (AC/DC, Sade, 311) and natural language
examples (CCR, The Boss, The King, The Stones) one needs specific rules
hard-coded (AC/DC= ack slash Dee See) in to the AVR database. a lot of
work went into this several years ago. additionally, there was a lot of
time spent optimizing systems for non-native english speakers. it could
always be better of course, and similar work would need to be done of
other languages.

point is these problems are solvable, so i'm wondering what experiences
one could enable.

Re: [slim] if you could voice-enable squeeze boxen...

2016-05-31 Thread netchord

the pronunciation problem is solvable, was in fact largely solved
several years ago, but not enough of the newer systems take advantage of
data that's available. it's actually better in the car for the most
part, at least those systems that relay on Nuance AVR.

and i agree about the kitchen as a primary use environment. still, it's
much easier to just say "play me x" than to grab my phone, unlock
it, scroll/click perhaps several menu layers deep, to find what i want.

ideally, there'd be some sort of AI + voice, so one could just walk in
the house, say "i feel fucking great, play music..." and the system
would understand "fucking great" is greater than merely great, and play
music accordingly.

and the reverse as well.

Chromecast now supports multiroom, so you could connect them to spare
inputs, analog or digital, on whatever you use to switch inputs.

but you're right, this is really just a way to enjoy SXM w/o spending a

a Chrome browser tab. you install the chrome cast extension for the
chrome browser, then browse to sirius xm on the web. choose listen
online, and then the station you want. once it begins to playback,
click on the google cast icon in the tab (to the right of the url

so, i have a cheap, and relatively easy workaround until this is
properly sorted out: Chromecast Audio. i installed the chrome
extension, connected the chromecast optical output to the optical in on
my Transporter, selected the input, then opened SXM in a tab, and cast
it to the device. works like a charm.

the chromecast is $35, and now supports multiroom, so i assume you could
connect them to digital/analog inputs on a variety of squeezeboxen,
selected those inputs, and cast away.

LMS is not the most elegant way to browse a music collection, or

Nice of you to ignore everything else I said (for which you presumably

You're right, I've not heard MQA. I have no need to.

Look: the world is full of basic understanding about all manner of
things, backed up by plenty of empirical evidence. And there are
crackpots in every sphere who would like to challenge the standard
model. When dismissed, they always resort to the same line: but how can
you know if you haven't tried it?. Well, life is just too short to give
every crackpot idea the time of day (*). The more at odds it is with the
standard model, the less inclined we are to waste our time testing it.

And high-end audio is absolutely chock-full of crackpot ideas so at odds
with what we are very sure to be true that they really don't deserve
even the slightest iota of our attention.

Here's an extreme example to illustrate the point:
ME: your pickup cartridge would sound so much better with my
revolutionary nylon stylus mounted on a cantilever lovingly crafted from
 cold pasta.
 YOU: don't be daft
ME: how can you say that without trying it?
 YOU: you're mad

Some of us apply the same reasoning when presented with the latest
 nonsense from the hires-peddling crowd.

So yes, I am closed-minded to many things that can't conceivably be
true. (Who was it said that you need to be careful keeping an open mind,
else your brains might fall out?)

(*) I'm not saying that Bob Stuart is a crackpot. Meridian have done
some fine things in the past. (I especially applaud their advocacy of
digital active speakers). But MQA doesn't make any sense, other than as
another way to fleece a gullible public.

you seem to have missed some key info, in that MQA is based on new
neuroscience research. so, while you may be sure you know what's true,
it seems the actual science was not settled.

Re: [slim] Apple's ALAC now open source!

2011-10-28 Thread netchord

correct me if i'm wrong, but i believe the transporter does not support
HW decoding for alac. for this reason, and because i use iTunes for
library management, i've kept my library as AIFF. sure, takes up more
space, but hard drives are cheap.

the other reason being i can hear the difference between alac coverted
to flac on the server, and native aiff playback. i assume there is no
firmware upgrade possible for the transporter that would provide HW
decoding for alac.

that said, i'm no longer using the analog outputs on the transporter-
it now connects digitally to a meridian G61 processor. i suppose i
should do some listening to see if there's still an audible difference
between aiff/alac in my system.

Re: [slim] Itunes Genius how can I have it in my sueezebox

2010-08-25 Thread netchord

Philip Meyer;572005 Wrote:
This is exactly what MusicIP does; it's much better than Genius:

 1. Supports more file formats, not just mp3 and Apple formats.
 2. It analyses the content of the music to find similarities, not
dependent on properly tagged music metadata.
 3. You have some control over how it makes mixes (eg. how similar music
is selected, whether to have smooth transitions between songs, etc).
 4. You can choose what music to include/exclude from mixes.

It's not particularly hard to install in a basic setup. i.e. just
install the product, point it at your music library and let it scan.
Then rescan SBS and it should work, as long as MusicIP client GUI is
 running.

There is more sophisticated installations (i.e. to run MusicIP as a
service that doesn't require the GUI client to be open), but take one
 step at a time.

Genius does waveform analysis, as well as text analysis. it used to be
tuned to content apple had available in the ITS, but it's broader
now.

in itunes, you just click the button that says save playlist when
you're viewing a genius generated PL. SC will recognize it, just takes
a bit for the refresh.

not as cool as one-touch, but it works.

easy enough to build both the WF analysis and PL gen algorithm into SC,
logitech would have to decide its worthwhile to license the technology.

little while unless someone else offers a patch.

7.3.4 and do not see this option in the basic player settings for the
transporter.
