[slim] Can the SB Android apps be made UPnPable?
Over the last couple of months I've been getting a PS Audio PWD integrated into my system. I have the network Bridge option for it, and have been trying the provided server and available UPnP apps. What I've confirmed, however, is that the Logitech supplied free Android app and the other 3rd party SB control apps absolutely kill what is currently available to control the PWD. The PWD and its music server are DLNA/UPnP capable. It had me wondering if it's possible to get any of the Android apps for it to be UPnPable, such that they could work with other renderers like the PWD. The other UPnP stuff out there is pitiful by comparison. I've always been very pleased with how the evolution of Slimserver - LMS has resulted in a tremendous control capability, now as extended through some nice apps. I like it a lot. My SB gear, BTW, is not going anywhere soon. It's been too much bang for the buck. :-) tonyptony's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3397 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=94888 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

You don't need to root either device to install a SB controller app, right? Also, both will install the SlideMe app? Thanks. I honestly don't remember if being rooted was required, or whether the SB app could be installed simply by sideloading (which is a bit different). With the initial release, the NT could load some things via sideloading, and if you wanted to take the next step you could root and then do things like access Market. I had my NT rooted so early in the game I'm not sure. Be that as it may, if you were to buy a NT right now it would probably have version 1.4.1 installed on it, which is the one they just released. If that's the case you would have few choices - I don't think you could get sideloading to work without rooting, and you'd have to root to be able to get anything off Android Market. JJZolx;681184 Wrote: Is it necessary to keep the Tablet's OS updated? Can't it just be left alone? A fair question, JJ. That's what I'm doing right now. The only risk is if any of the content unique to a given tablet (in the case of NT, the BN store and Netflix HD) are of interest to the user, and if they make changes to those features that cause them to stop working if you don't update the OS. In my case neither of those features is of any import so I can hold tight. But others' MMV. What will make the difference for me is if the XDA team can't get 2ndinit or alternate OSes bootable on the NT. In that case it really does become a dead end. Live with a rooted 1.4.0 or 1.4.1 on it and be left behind as newer and better tablet environments become available, or sit and wait for someone to root the next version when it comes out (and so on)? Neither is useful for any reasonable long haul. Part of the reason the original Nook did so well was that it was open enough to keep the XDA community interested in doing stuff with (to) it. If the limitations I've just described are not eliminated, IME the developer community will never be as large as it was for the original. -- tonyptony tonyptony's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3397 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=92754 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Kindle Fire vs. Nook Tablet as Controller
I have the NT and it works very well as a SB controller. I'm using the free Logitech app right now and I'm having no troubles with it. As to which one would be better, I'm not sure. The NT entered the market as a potential sweetheart tablet. It was quickly rooted and showed signs of having a future in the Android open source developers' community - even with the locked bootloader. BN recently issued an OS update that closed the open holes which were used to root it. Of course a workaround was found by the community, but it does not bode well for the future of the device. BN is demonstrating a very closed attitude toward a device that (for God's sake) they trademarked as a Nook TABLET. I understand their POV, but if they wanted it to be a glorified Nook Color 2 they shouldn't have called it a tablet. I've seen the Kindle Fire in the store, and it looks nice. Apart from the difference in user interface I think the NT seems to run slightly more smoothly, and (IMO) videos look better on the NT. The NT has a great screen; it also has real hard buttons where the KF does not. To me the NT also feels better in the hand. From what I've read Amazon has released an OS update which has improved their UI a bit, but also has closed some of the access which allowed it to be rooted. Don't know to what degree as I don't own one. I have until Jan 31st to return the NT. If the gang at XDA Developers haven't figured out by then how to permanently get around the NT restrictons I may return it. I don't want to have to keep checking in every time BN releases an OS update, hoping the team will find a way past it. The future of the Fire may be the same. The only diff is that Amzon has a much better app store than BN right now, and I don't see anything being done by BN to entice a whole bunch of app developers to generate NT apps for their own store. There are other 7 tabs which are more open, so maybe that might be the way to go if you don't want to get on the will they finally crack it or not fo good merry-go-round. Probably more info than you wanted. -- tonyptony tonyptony's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3397 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=92754 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Is there any problem with burn in if I run my SB3 for days at a time (like for Internet radio) with the display at full brightness? Does anyone know the MTBF for the display when running at full brightness? -- tonyptony tonyptony's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3397 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=32948 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Perhaps, but not yet. When it does I'll use the SB FW Selector tool to install the one that works best for me. -- tonyptony tonyptony's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3397 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=32154 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] How to stop auto firmware update after 6.5.1?
I just installed 6.5.1. It all went fine, but I want to continue to use the firmware vesion that was already installed on my SB3. Well, I edited the squeezebox2.version file and fixed the problem. -- tonyptony tonyptony's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3397 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=32154 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Hmm, I put it into my Plugins folder and restarted Slimserver. It now shows up in the Slimserver Web interface under Server Settings Plugins, but it does not show up on my SB3. I checked under Plugins and Settings. Where do I find it? -- tonyptony tonyptony's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3397 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=24850 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Re: Why would stuttering SUDDENLY start?
I think I solved my problem. I upgraded to the version 48 firmware and everything appears to be back to normal. Buffer is at 90-100%, signal strength up to 90%. But I still can't figure out why version 35, which I had been using to this point, was working just as well until it... didn't. -- tonyptony tonyptony's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3397 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=24850 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Why would stuttering SUDDENLY start?
I've suddenly started having the same problem which has been posted a number of times: music playback through my wireless SB3 stutters through every song played. The thing is not one thing has changed from the time when it was working perfectly. Running on a Win XP Pro SP2 system, Hawking wireless router, PC is wired to the router but SB3 is wireless. FW version 35, Slimserver version 6.2, signal strength 80%, buffer = 10%. I'll probably move to FW version 43, but what I'd like to understand is WHY did this suddenly start happening? This very same setup worked like a champ through the time I last used it (about a month ago - I've been on travel). At that time I could leave a huge playlist running for hours on end. Never skipped or stuttered on me once. When I started it up today it has been completely unable to play any tune without stuttering. The only program I'd installed since Slimserver is TagRename, which has nothing to do with a network interface. Hoping to hear from anyone who could help me figure this out! I read a post where the person who had the same problem said it went away when he reinstalled Slimserver. I've used TagRename a lot on my music library, but told Slimserver to completely rescan my library before playing music. Is there any evidence that some kind of Slimserver problem can cause this stuttering? -- tonyptony tonyptony's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3397 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=24850 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
