Doesn't LMS have to be a UPnP control point for something like this to
work?

[slim] Can the SB Android apps be made UPnPable?

2012-04-22 Thread tonyptony

Over the last couple of months I've been getting a PS Audio PWD
integrated into my system. I have the network Bridge option for it, and
have been trying the provided server and available UPnP apps.

What I've confirmed, however, is that the Logitech supplied free Android
app and the other 3rd party SB control apps absolutely kill what is
currently available to control the PWD. The PWD and its music server are
DLNA/UPnP capable. It had me wondering if it's possible to get any of
the Android apps for it to be UPnPable, such that they could work with
other renderers like the PWD. The other UPnP stuff out there is pitiful
by comparison. I've always been very pleased with how the evolution of
Slimserver - LMS has resulted in a tremendous control capability, now
as extended through some nice apps. I like it a lot.

My SB gear, BTW, is not going anywhere soon. It's been too much bang for
the buck. :-)

I honestly don't remember if being rooted was required, or whether the
SB app could be installed simply by sideloading (which is a bit
different). With the initial release, the NT could load some things via
sideloading, and if you wanted to take the next step you could root and
then do things like access Market. I had my NT rooted so early in the
game I'm not sure. Be that as it may, if you were to buy a NT right now
it would probably have version 1.4.1 installed on it, which is the one
they just released. If that's the case you would have few choices - I
don't think you could get sideloading to work without rooting, and
you'd have to root to be able to get anything off Android Market. So
there you go.

JJZolx;681184 Wrote:
Is it necessary to keep the Tablet's OS updated? Can't it just be left
 alone?

A fair question, JJ. That's what I'm doing right now. The only risk is
if any of the content unique to a given tablet (in the case of NT, the
BN store and Netflix HD) are of interest to the user, and if they make
changes to those features that cause them to stop working if you don't
update the OS. In my case neither of those features is of any import so
I can hold tight. But others' MMV. What will make the difference for me
is if the XDA team can't get 2ndinit or alternate OSes bootable on the
NT. In that case it really does become a dead end. Live with a rooted
1.4.0 or 1.4.1 on it and be left behind as newer and better tablet
environments become available, or sit and wait for someone to root the
next version when it comes out (and so on)? Neither is useful for any
reasonable long haul.

Part of the reason the original Nook did so well was that it was open
enough to keep the XDA community interested in doing stuff with (to)
it. If the limitations I've just described are not eliminated, IME the
developer community will never be as large as it was for the original.

Re: [slim] Kindle Fire vs. Nook Tablet as Controller

2012-01-02 Thread tonyptony

I have the NT and it works very well as a SB controller. I'm using the
free Logitech app right now and I'm having no troubles with it. As to
which one would be better, I'm not sure. The NT entered the market as a
potential sweetheart tablet. It was quickly rooted and showed signs of
having a future in the Android open source developers' community - even
with the locked bootloader. BN recently issued an OS update that closed
the open holes which were used to root it. Of course a workaround was
found by the community, but it does not bode well for the future of the
device. BN is demonstrating a very closed attitude toward a device that
(for God's sake) they trademarked as a Nook TABLET. I understand their
POV, but if they wanted it to be a glorified Nook Color 2 they
shouldn't have called it a tablet.

I've seen the Kindle Fire in the store, and it looks nice. Apart from
the difference in user interface I think the NT seems to run slightly
more smoothly, and (IMO) videos look better on the NT. The NT has a
great screen; it also has real hard buttons where the KF does not. To
me the NT also feels better in the hand. From what I've read Amazon has
released an OS update which has improved their UI a bit, but also has
closed some of the access which allowed it to be rooted. Don't know to
what degree as I don't own one.

I have until Jan 31st to return the NT. If the gang at XDA Developers
haven't figured out by then how to permanently get around the NT
restrictons I may return it. I don't want to have to keep checking in
every time BN releases an OS update, hoping the team will find a way
past it. The future of the Fire may be the same. The only diff is that
Amzon has a much better app store than BN right now, and I don't see
anything being done by BN to entice a whole bunch of app developers to
generate NT apps for their own store.

There are other 7 tabs which are more open, so maybe that might be the
way to go if you don't want to get on the will they finally crack it or
not fo good merry-go-round. Probably more info than you wanted.

[slim] Time to replace my Nokia 770, but with what?

2011-10-29 Thread tonyptony

I'm looking for a Wi-fi capable, SB supported remote device now that my
770 is being retired. I have the Controller but the screen is too
small. I have some things which may narrow down the choices so here
goes:

- I have a work supplied Blackberry so I don't have my own cell phone
of the new fancy types (Android or iPhone), and really have no
intention to get one.

- I don't want anything as big (or expensive) as an iPad.

- I want something that is well supported with a SB/SS interface, and
can be used as a decent sofa-side Internet access device (so it should
have a decent Web-capable UI).

Is there anything which will fit the bill?

The problem is that if the SB3 is used during the day, the LEFT and

last used position. Is there a way to clear all menu lists so that
when I scroll into them they all start at Position 1?

- Geek stuff only
- Vaporware

It's worth it if your system can support it. Having said that, if you
don't have much of a desire to take some steps first - careful speaker
placement, at least a basic level of room treatment - then you will get
something out of it, but not the best you can.

Bottom line is I use it and it works.

[slim] Artwork issues with Nokia 770 skin

2007-12-14 Thread tonyptony

Like many here I've been using the Nokia 770 and Ben's great skin for
control of my SB3. I have just finally completed the accumulation of
all my album artwork (~1000 albums). They are all JPG files stored as
cover.jpg in each album directory, with sizes ranging from 240x240 to
500x500.

I can see the covers fine when I select an album, but when I use either
the Artwork or 1x1 selections on the Nokia skin I just get grey
thumbnails with question marks in them. I did read that it may take
some time for the Artwork page to fill (it currently shows 50 covers at
a time), but the 1x1 page is only showing two covers at one time (the
artwork should appear pretty much instantly, no?). Do I have some kind
of problem, or does it just take too long for the cover art to load
into the skin?

Still on 6.5.x. Yes, I've been debating moving over to 7.0 beta, but I
haven't done the forum search yet to see if I can install that and keep
my 6.5 install unharmed.

Sorry to hear about your frustration, but the fact is that SlimServer
has never been intended to organize your music. Indeed, the software
deliberately avoids modifying any music files at all on your disk, and
this has been a conscious design principle since version 1.0.

We chose to focus on playback only. There are lots of tools for
organizing your music, fixing tags, and so on.

Add me to the list of people who thank you for doing just that. I have
plenty of other tools that do a great job at these other things. I'm on
board with wanting Slimserver / Squeezecenter to just control my music
selection and playback as well as possible.

[slim] Some tunes warble all of a sudden

2007-09-19 Thread tonyptony

So I'm playing some random tunes through my SB3 and on the next tune
(Alison Krauss and US Live, Track 5) the tune starts warbling and seems
to slow down while it's doing this weird warble thing. I go back to my
computer and play it locally through WinAmp. Plays fine. Try playing it
again through the SB3. Warble. Unplug and replug SB3. Same. Listen
through the headphone jack on the SB3. Same. Play a different tune,
plays fine. Why would this one tune play oddly through the SB3 but not
through WinAmp?

All tracks on my system were ripped to FLAC through EAC. CRC checks out
good on this and all tracks I ripped from my CDs.

I think I may have narrowed down my own problem. May be an issue with
Inguz. I will post in the Plugins forum.

Re: [slim] Display brightness

2007-02-21 Thread tonyptony

Thanks Skunk. I'm doing the scrolling, but I still worry about the
little Now Playing above the scroll. Thing is that where I have my
SB3 located, the brightest setting really does help.

[slim] Display brightness

Is there any problem with burn in if I run my SB3 for days at a time
(like for Internet radio) with the display at full brightness? Does
anyone know the MTBF for the display when running at full brightness?

Perhaps, but not yet. When it does I'll use the SB FW Selector tool to
install the one that works best for me.

the firmware vesion that was already installed on my SB3. How do I tell

I can only hope that's the problem. I downloaded Netstumbler last night
and will give it a try. With luck I'll just be able to move to another
channel.

Hmm, I put it into my Plugins folder and restarted Slimserver. It now
shows up in the Slimserver Web interface under Server Settings
Plugins, but it does not show up on my SB3. I checked under Plugins and
Settings. Where do I find it?

[slim] Re: Why would stuttering SUDDENLY start?

2006-06-20 Thread tonyptony

I think I solved my problem. I upgraded to the version 48 firmware and
everything appears to be back to normal. Buffer is at 90-100%, signal
strength up to 90%. But I still can't figure out why version 35, which
I had been using to this point, was working just as well until it...
didn't.

[slim] Why would stuttering SUDDENLY start?

2006-06-19 Thread tonyptony

I've suddenly started having the same problem which has been posted a
number of times: music playback through my wireless SB3 stutters
through every song played. The thing is not one thing has changed from
the time when it was working perfectly.

Running on a Win XP Pro SP2 system, Hawking wireless router, PC is
wired to the router but SB3 is wireless. FW version 35, Slimserver
version 6.2, signal strength 80%, buffer = 10%. I'll probably move to
FW version 43, but what I'd like to understand is WHY did this suddenly
start happening?

This very same setup worked like a champ through the time I last used
it (about a month ago - I've been on travel). At that time I could
leave a huge playlist running for hours on end. Never skipped or
stuttered on me once. When I started it up today it has been completely
unable to play any tune without stuttering. The only program I'd
installed since Slimserver is TagRename, which has nothing to do with
a network interface. Hoping to hear from anyone who could help me
figure this out!

I read a post where the person who had the same problem said it went
away when he reinstalled Slimserver. I've used TagRename a lot on my
music library, but told Slimserver to completely rescan my library
before playing music. Is there any evidence that some kind of
Slimserver problem can cause this stuttering?
