still, that would be a very needed and useful function. In principal, I
would like to just use Winamp/Windows Media Player for selecting
playlists and songs. Obviously not always, because one of the strength
of Squeezebox is the fact, that you don't need a PC running all the
time, if you have the Server running on a NAS.

But in the case I have a PC running, that would simply be the most
convenient way to go - using the Squeezebox Webinterface is just very
clunky...

I would say that for most users (but certainly not all), the SBS web ui
isn't the preferred interface. Rather, most people turn to one of the
remotes, such as an SB infrared remote, SB Controller, iPhone/iTouch
with iPeng, Android phone, or other device. One of the main ideas
behind SBs is being able to control your music without sitting at the
computer.

If you want a more refined front-end than the SBS web ui, you may want
to look at Moose or muso, which are dedicated Windows applications for
controlling SBs.

Finally, the SB protocol (slimproto) is open and documented, so it
should be possible to write a Winamp plugin to control Squeezeboxes,
though I'm not so sure about WMP's capabilities in this regard. For
example, someone wrote such an interface for foobar2000, software that
may be considered in the same family as Winamp. Someone just needs to
write the Winamp plugin.

Hi, I wasn't aware of Moose - just checked it out and it looks really
good. Much easier and faster to control the player. So thanks for
pointing that out to me! I understand that a plugin e.g. for Winamp
could be written by someone. I was just assuming that Logitech might
want to put more effort here by themselves (e.g. convincing MS to
support it directly), as this functionality is bascially what Apples
Airplay does and with Airplay integration in many A/V receivers this
year, it became a direct competitor for the Squeezebox.

To be clear, you can do exactly that if using SBS server on your
computer or USB into your Touch, just go to My Music Music Folder.

You just can't do this using only WinAmp without some workaround
 techniques.

When you put music on the Music Folder...do you have to refresh the
server? Or as soon as I drop a file on that folder, the server sees
it?

What you mean by this: You just can't do this using only WinAmp

Yes, folder contents are immediately available to SBS or Touch + USB
(and any player using SBS) without having to rescan.
Scanning is needed to update data, files, tags, album art. Like if
using the Search aspects of SBS or Touch + USB.

As suggested before you can use stream.mp3 and/or use the WavInput
plugin to stream from a WinAmp type program. But it's a more complex
setup and has limited capabilities.
Best to just use the simple SBS and/or player My Music Music Folder
technique, IMO. Especially as this is what you prefer and are familiar
with.

ain't what you'd call minimal...

From the Squeezebox Server (SBS) web interface, go to My Music Music
Folder [sub-folder where you saved the MP3] and press the Play icon.
Or instead of using the SBS web interface you could do it directly on
the Touch, or on a remote device such as SB Controller, iPhone with
iPeng, etc.

This assumes that you have already specified the My Music folder as
the folder for your music library in the SBS settings (Settings Basic
Info).

You might want to make sure that you have tagged the files as you would
want to. It will prevent tagged files/folders getting mixed up with
ones that are untagged. I always tag and add any artwork prior to
moving music to the folder SBS points to because it just keeps things
cleaner.

Is there a way to play a file straight from a folder from your computer?
Like I open My music folder and I see the MP3 or Flac I want to play and
in someway make the touch play that file.

I have always played my music this way using winamp. See the song I
like, double click, and it plays!

The only solution I can think of at the moment is to use the Wave Input
plugin which I think can be configured to send the audio from the
computer to the Squeezebox Touch.

What we really need is someone to implement a simple shell extension
that executes a CLI/JSON command like this based on the file you
select:
01:02:03:04:05:06 playlist play /music/abba/01_Voulez_Vous.mp3

Where 01:02:03:04:05:06 is the mac address or name of the Squeezebox
and /music/abba/01_Voulez_Vous.mp3 is the path to the file.
