Interesting to see that Sonos considers AirPlay as a possible element of their ecosystem: Http://www.sonos.com/airplay Chrobrego's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15230 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=98619 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Listening squeezebox music in the living room without any squeezebox hardware!
Yes, but have you seen how they do this? The AirPlay device (Airport Express) gets plugged into the analog in of a Sonos device and that's how that works. You have no integration whatsoever but you need to start playing AirPlay from one App and control all that from another App (Sonos). It's a hack, not more. pippin's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13777 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=98619 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Yes I was a bit disappointed when I saw the details. At least their marketing aknowledge the need and maybe it is a first step to something better. They did this already three years ago when AirPlay was still called AirTunes. pippin wrote: AirPlay only supports up to 48/24 but up to that it's bitperfect, it's sent as an ALAC stream. Actually even if you use the volume control in iPeng; the volume information is sent separately from the audio information, the volume control is not being done by applying a gain to the digital data like in the Squeezebox (the Receiver on the other end of the AirPlay connection might still do that but iPeng and AirPlay itself keep their hands off the data; at least unless you apply an equalizer) so you can design an AirPlay device that actually does analog volume control. Sorry to bring up an old quote, but just interested where the transcoding to 16/44.1 ALAC takes place (if for instance, I play a FLAC file from the SB server). I assume it is on the server, but it's not done by the Apple device is it? amey01's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11274 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=98619 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

amey01 wrote: And if you send it a 24/96 FLAC (for instance)? Will it downsample? In the AirPlay case: yes. AirPlay (on iOS devices) only supports 24/48. Actually all iOS use cases except for iPad+Camera Connection Kit+USB DAC don't support 24/96. Yeah, I'm headed this direction, too. I have an old iPhone 4 with iPeng + in-player app that I've repurposed as a standalone player. I'm using either an Apple dock (so the iPhone has a good power source) + line out connected to self-powered speakers, or docking it in a Yamaha iPhone dock to use in the garage. Would work just as well with a new/used iPod Touch. ...but still using the free squeezebox server. I guess it was high time for Logitech to abandon the squeezebox business... So here is my prefered setup: * A NAS with Squeezebox Server installed * An iPod touch with iPeng * An Airplay compatible receiver (which connect to speakers). In my case Marantz NR-1603 Big advantages: 1) you spare two devices: a) Squeezebox receiver or Touch + b) The receiver remote control (no need to select the source on the amplifier wit that solution) 2) That is extremely convenient to use. With the iPod you select and play the music with iPeng (used as player) and it is sent to the receiver with Airplay. The receiver in stand-by will automatically turn on and output the sound to the living room speakers. Have you tried such setup, what do you think? You can have a NAS with SbS (or LMS) installed in a different room. You can control it all with iPeng and touch, but you'll still need some bit of hardware connected to your Marantz. A sb touch, receiver, SB3, etc. I don't think you can send to an airplay device with SbS/LMS. But i could be wrong here. garym's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17325 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=98619 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
