Re: [slim] SB3 reboots after soon after starting to play

2018-12-22 Thread DanielTheGreat

Philippe,

Many thanks for your good advice, and especially for the list of part
numbers – very helpful. I'll start looking for suitable caps after
Xmas, and perhaps try to find Ta or NbO2 types with the same footprints,
as they should last longer than Al electrolytics.

I'll report back when the job's done.

Season's Greetings to everyone!

Regards,
Daniel

I understand, but, from my experience it's a 100% proven cause on 4 SB3
that had this symptom (I saved 3 but on one I stupidly damaged was the
CPU, but I still fixed the MB and verified it). One tip: because
removing capacitor can be done using the "twisting method", it takes
literally 5 minutes to remove them. I think you likely can take a pass
on the 63V which is for the VFD, then you can replace the set close to
the DC/DC, then the set close to the DAC if it still does not work. I
use solder paste, put the capacitors back one by one, hold them with a
plier, solder one leg pretty hot (300°C) to make it quick and handle the
thermal capacity of the ground plane connected ones, then move to next
one. Each capacitor is a 2 minutes job, so it's 1 hour in total. You
might easily spend more time in investigation, unfortunately

Oh boy, that's going to take some time, sourcing 23 SMD electros that
are drop-in replacements (physically + electrically) for all those on
the main SB3 PCA. The two THD caps will be easier. I might hook a 0R1
non-inductive resistor in series with the external supply first, and
monitor the R's voltage with a DSO in peak-detect mode, to see if
current spikes are indeed a symptom.

Some other threads suggest replacing only a few capacitors (@ralphy made
suggestions). I personally replaced them all all 3 times, at the end of
the day it's not too long and some are only accessible when surroundings
ones are removed, so I took the brute force approach.

Current draw is probably going through peaks that you don't see unless
you've use a scope, so the voltage drops is sudden if the capacitors are
not doing their job and the reboot happens, I assume

Yes, I've tried all the 'usual' suggestions, to no avail. So I'm about
to start checking the internal power supplies. Pity there's no
schematic or illustrated guide on where to check these.

Any suggestions about the most likely culprits? I've seen a post about
the 1.2V MCU supply, but I haven't started looking for it yet.

The puzzling thing is this reboot ONLY happens (repeatably) when I play
a song (a few seconds into it), NOT when it's sitting idle. Yet the
current draw (I've hooked it up to a bench supply) changes very little
between idle and playing, which suggests to me it's not a supply issue.
I'm a bit stumped, but will check the supplies anyway.

+1 and after that, this requires capacitors to be replaced. I "saved"
another one last week. Working 100% now

Have you tried all the step the OP did ? After PSU check, reseat/remove

Have you tried with a PSU from one of the other SB3s. I would say that
for a behaviour like that, more often than not a failing PSU is the
culprit.

same thing!

[slim] SB3 reboots after soon after starting to play

2017-05-16 Thread epoch1970

HI there.
I'm sure I have seen subjects about this, but my quick search did not
return useful info.

I was given a SD squeezebox 3 (ether/wifi) some time ago and decided to
power it up. It has a fantastic looking VFD screen. Problem, it reboots
or locks up a few seconds after starting to play anything.
It's not the PSU, it checks ok and the SB3 reboots also with another
PSU.
I did a xilinx reset. I did not reinstall firmware (137) or reset
factory settings.
It's not the wifi card: the SB3 reboots the same with wifi card
installed or not.
I've pushed on the mezzanine connector, not that it looked any loose
before that.
It gets a DHCP address, so I suppose it has not forgotten its MAC
address.
On cursory examination, I didn't see a blown capacitor or anything
strange. I've used analog out only (and not for long...)

Does this behavior reminds anyone of a known defect?
Thanks!
