Something that works with either Word or Open Office`s version of Word?

I have today downloaded Open Office 3.3 with difficulties,but, I notice from my
desktop that I still have earlier versions of Open Office. Should these
earlier versions not be deleted when a new latest version is installed? If so
can I delete the earlier versions?
